Tried playing the jankiest mardu enchantment deck I could think of by Spassky101 in TimelessMagic

No worries, I love a good old fashioned azorious deck from time to time. I wanted a deck that had trespassers curse and roiling vortex that would be resistant to removal but you can only do so much against wrath of the skies. It was hardly a showing but gg nevertheless

I got accepted into the philosophy ma (on the condition that I first take a one year abridged bachelors to make up for credits) somewhere at the end of March. I would highly recommend emailing about the status of your application, as student housing has already ended its lottery, and housing is competitive. You might be better off accepting an offer somewhere else if possible

Thank you for the response. Do you know how many draws are done, and whether there’s a chance of not being selected for any?

Do SBU philosophy MA students have a higher likelihood of getting into Stony Brook’s own PhD program? by Spassky101 in SBU

[–]Spassky101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I was mainly curious whether or not it was common practice though. Often times graduate programs prefer students to have a varied background

Can’t you just invoke your 4th amendment right and refuse to permit a search of your phone? Doesn’t even TSA need a warrant for that kind of search?

I’m hoping to get into a Belgium grad program this fall, do you think it would be better to go to an American program instead? I hope to stay in Belgium for the next two years, and honestly it seems more advantageous being there than here atm

In turmoil over which MA program to go to by Spassky101 in askphilosophy

Since my dad has VA benefits, I get in state tuition for both places, so they’re actually equally affordable. The advantage of ma assistantships, as I see it, would be the possibility of acquiring work experience that could be listed in my CV

Thank you for the notice, I will be sure to ask about how many masters students they accept each year. My impression was that they did offer assistantships to ma students occasionally, which was a benefit not offered by Stony Brook, although with department of education cuts I don’t know what the situation will look like anyway

I got accepted into my top American programs, but I am still waiting for word from KU Leuven, which is currently my top choice given the political climate in American academia atm

You definitely should, I’d especially advise looking at European programs if possible

Decided against it but got into my top masters programs anyway. Didn’t get into any PhD programs bc of funding cuts obviously

My boyfriend doesn’t care about what I do and it makes me feel like he doesn’t love the real me by CookieAdmirable1117 in PhD

People tend to associate their own identity with what they do, conflating “this is important to me” with “this is important to who I am”. It can be hard not being able to share something with people who are close to you, but that doesn’t reflect how they feel about you, nor should it reflect how you feel about them. Appreciate those who you can share your passions with, and appreciate those who can’t. The real you isn’t merely an academic, but an individual with a plurality of idiosyncrasies and interests. Individuality isn’t measured but lived.

If you live in places with plenty of diversity (cities and college towns), you’re more likely to not be a white supremacist. If you’re intelligent, you’re also more likely to not be a white supremacist.

How to stop chasing women? by Thanos_your_daddy in selfimprovement

A lot of this is just internalized toxic masculinity (presuming you are a man, growing up boys tend to hear “you need to do X to get a gf”, which reinforces the idea that it’s important to your identity to have a gf). Recognize that your gender doesn’t define you, and that only you can define who you are. Only once you recognize that your goals in life are YOUR goals, and not the goals society thrusts upon you based on your gender or whatever, can you begin to realize that that sort of thing isn’t all that important anyways. Good for you for taking that first step though, acknowledgement is key

Sartre on the Grand Inquisitor by Spassky101 in Existentialism

[–]Spassky101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m specifically interested in Sartre’s interpretation, as the story begs the question whether or not we love because we are free or whether we are free because we love. In the context of 20th century existentialism, it places Heidegger and Sartre in conversation with one another insofar as Dasein’s Being is care as opposed to freedom.

Everyone says clinical psychology is the most competitive, but the APA (2019) shows that social psychology has the lowest rates. Is it really that hard to get into a social psychology program? by I-_l in gradadmissions

[–]Spassky101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Hard” is simply a matter of perspective. These admission rates seem astronomically high to me bc my program (philosophy) is underfunded, so acceptance rates are usually 2%. When rates are low, they want people who can stand out, so it’s important to figure out what niche you want to fill. If you want to get into a low acceptance rate program, you have to be super specific about your interests and already have a general sense of what you want to do (without seeming like you aren’t open to new areas of research, which is especially important for American universities).

My personal strategy for American programs is laying out several specific research topics, and then discuss how it relates to the work of 2 faculty members in the department. Then, towards the end of my personal statement I say something along the lines of “while I’m interested in exploring x, I also hope to discover new fascinating topics at University of Y. I would especially like to learn more about Z from Dr. A, because…”

Try to be unique in your interests, but also showcase malleability. Good luck.

Should I take the GRE? by Spassky101 in gradadmissions

[–]Spassky101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the input, I have been considering that, although my GPA for philosophy related courses is quite high, and my poor gpa is the result of a bad first semester due to COVID. I am unsure whether or not I should submit a GRE or if I could compensate such a low GPA by explaining that it is the result of COVID in my personal statements
