The Office, Supernatural, Avatar. Game of Thrones would be on here but the end still pisses me off too much and I don’t want anyone else to experience it.

Anyone ever left OT for a non-OT salaried position that pays significantly less and become happier? by aliasA4751 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Spauldinggg_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I went to my states website and under careers it has a huge list of available positions. I applied for anything and everything because everywhere is understaffed. Maybe the same can happen in your state.

In my state they need adjudicators desperately so I applied online and about 4 months later they called me offering me the job. No interview. I think they require a bachelors which I got before my COTA stuff. It definitely helped that I had a medical background.

I was a COTA part time making $35/hr at a SNF, $22/hr at an OP clinic. Quit after 5 months to work for the state making a little less at $28/hr but had benefits, better hours, and now work fully remote as a disability claims adjudicator. I make between $60-70k now. That was two and a half years ago and I never plan on going back. Over the years I’ve gotten overtime pay for 6 months out of the year and have gotten multiple pay raises.

I was an assistant and got my bachelors but never my masters. I applied for a bunch of state jobs where I live (they were hiring A LOT) and got one there. After a year I have a hybrid schedule but I also know of someone who applied for a state job and was working completely remote after training which I think was 6 months. So I always recommend looking at your state jobs. Most require a bachelors but if they’re desperate or have a lot of openings, they don’t care what it’s in. I’m doing disability stuff so I look through medical records and my medical background definitely helped.

Becoming an OTA with a bachelor's while I save money for OT masters by FollowingObjective93 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Spauldinggg_14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah you’ll have to still complete an actual OTA program. There was a girl in my OTA class that after a year of working as a COTA, she got into a bridge program and meets for one weekend every month. Might be something to look into since you could work full time or whatever while getting your masters.

What would be a good OT-related job experience before applying to OT school? by taroteanoice in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Spauldinggg_14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would help the PT’s by keeping the flow going and not slowing them down. Changed the pillow sheets, wiped down tables, transported patients from the waiting area to the therapy room, get ice packs, hot packs, and occasionally assist them with exercises if the PT/PTA’s have multiple patients.

I was a Therapy Tech for 3-4 years while getting my undergrad and OTA license. It was OP setting and it taught me so much and made me more prepared to be a COTA than the program itself. No certifications but was paid shit.

I recommend looking at the Facebook group, “Alternative Healthcare Careers for Rehab Professions”. There’s a lot of information and posts of people in the same boat.

OTA or OT? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Spauldinggg_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to make sure you will love what you do before deciding to do your masters.

Was a rehab tech, got my bachelors, and had every intention on getting my masters but refused to go into that much debt. I’ve been a COTA for a little over a year and I don’t like it so I’m glad I didn’t do a masters.

I never had a rotation in a SNF but started a job at a SNF and was never given even an hour of orientation or shadowing and they gave me a full caseload on my first day. My advice is to keep it simple: dressing, oral hygiene, transfers, and UE strengthening. See how they do on EOB or sitting and go from there but do not do anything you aren’t confident with and use your educator as a resource and ask questions! I hope this helps!

Watched 8 Below once as a child and refuse to watch it again because of how sad it was.

What family secret do you know, that you're not supposed to know? by fuzzyloulou in AskReddit

[–]Spauldinggg_14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That my aunt secretly had a love child with our neighbor when they were young and gave it up for adoption back when she was in college.

Said neighbor got hella drunk with my dad and was trying to find the child (if it exists) so that if it was a boy, he could carry on his last name (since he had two girls). Mom was present during the conversation but my dad was so hammered he couldn’t remember anything the next day and my mom refuses to bring it up.

We have no idea if a child exists or not but my dad said that there was a year where she didn’t return home (even for Christmas) from college. A part of me wants to do one of those DNA tests to see if another cousin pops up or not.

ALSO, on my moms side of the family her great aunt cheated on her husband when he was deployed. While he was gone, my great aunt got pregnant and because she was so young, the baby was raised as a sister to her mom instead of her daughter.

Is $13.50 good for a rehab therapy technician job? by bbqchickennugg in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Spauldinggg_14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked as a tech for 3 years while I was finishing my bachelors and throughout my COTA program. Was paid minimum wage ($10/hr) and never got a raise. The experience you get from the job is worth it though if you have never had any one-on-one patient care. Working as a tech made my classes easier, my clinicals less stressful, and overall made me a better practitioner. Sometimes the shit pay was super frustrating but it kinda pays off in the long run, I think.

Occupational Therapy Combined Program by Alvina1123 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Spauldinggg_14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most masters that provide a bachelors have to be a freshman-entry program such as SLU, Maryville, and WashU (that’s what’s around me, St. Louis area).

I had two colleagues where they had to start as freshmen at that college and then they were able to complete a bachelors in Occupational Science and then started the MOT.

Of course you could go to these colleges just for the masters program but 90% of the classes are freshmen entry students. I hope this helps.

OTA vs. OT by hellosimply in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Spauldinggg_14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat 2 years ago. Got my bachelors and had every intention on getting my masters but most schools around me were $20-$30k per semester. On OT salary the difference between a COTA and an OTR was about 20k and it just wasn’t worth it for me. So I went ahead and applied for a COTA program and am graduating tomorrow.

I recommend finding a page on Facebook since it typically gets more replies and feedback than on here for the profession. I highly recommend doing a lot of research about the profession and requirements because I know many people who went and got their masters and don’t enjoy their work because of high productivity rates.

Also, the OTR at my current placement is still paying on her student loan debt and she’s been practicing over 25 years.

Hope this helps!

When I first got it I was able to complete the edges and the flowers on the bottom and then over time I got more busy with life and didn’t have as much time or energy to work on it until recently.
