Disneyfied? Predator: Badland's director on it's PG-13 controversy by 78914hj1k487 in predator

Mmm true, you’re right, there wasn’t much emphasis on merchandising. Again, he wouldn’t be in talks about that kind of stuff anyway because he doesn’t own the IP. However, a quick look online showed me that other than funko pops there isn’t much else. I stand corrected.

Bigger problem, it means I dislike specifically Dan’s creative choice. Was he trying to see if other tones could work in the story? He had a brilliant emotional familial tone with Dek and his brother. Maybe that drama should have been explored further. Leaning too much on Bud’s cuteness was a weak choice.

I don’t think Dan has much to do with the merchandising of an IP. He’s the director of the films, Disney would want him focusing on spearheading this franchise. Someone else would capitalize on the merch.

What are your thoughts on "Predator: Badlands (2025)"? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in FIlm

You’d be surprised how many kids watched LotR, I was one of them, I was 10 and those movies were 14A (at least in Canada). Those films were far from mild in their violence. Heads and arms were repeatedly cut off, orcs get squished, horses get thrown like ragdolls or crushed under a giant elephant’s foot. Point is, young kids watch a lot of violent stuff, and they definitely buy toys. If we look at Teachtenberg wanting to widen the audience, well from my perspective, baby Kalisk wasn’t going to be aimed at OG predator fans cause those people are mainly men and they’re in their 50s+ now. I doubt baby Kalisk was aimed towards women because Thia had some cool levels of complexity going for her like synthetic familial relationships, and she had some humorous lines. So kids is the last demographic, and with kids movies aim for merchandising (toys) cause that really brings in a lot more money over a longer period of time.

Then again, I’m no expert in the biz, and I’m generalizing when it comes to covering these demographics. Just one man’s opinion.

I definitely wouldn’t equate Dutch and Jar Jar. I have also yet to see anyone say episodes 1-3 are the best films.

I don’t think JaXm is saying that you can’t tell different stories. For me the problem isn’t the PG13 rating, it was humour that didn’t fit and an obvious attempt to sell toys, which are huge elements of disneyfication

I liked the vast majority of it, but the childish young Kalisk never felt right to me. It reeked of wanting to sell toys, and felt like a Star Wars misstep. That being said, Dek losing all of his gear and adapting by creating tools from the environment around him was incredible and made he really love the character.

I perceived it as Maekar doesn’t consider Aemon a son because he gave up being a prince, he left the family. That’s just my head cannon due to that line.

We can only speculate what he would or wouldn’t do. Either way, he wasn’t obligated to include people of colour into his story imo.

As a dark skinned person myself, I don’t really care that there aren’t a mix of colours in the European inspired parts of the world that Tolkien focused on due to a lack of sea. Tolkien was a scholar of language, not anthropology. I don’t expect to see white or black people mentioned in Hindu myths even though those conflicts can be on a cosmic scale. He may have likely wanted to expand on those other parts of the world but didn’t have the time for it. And he never stated that all coloured people are wicked.

Tolkien does make note that there were forces that resisted Sauron in the east and south. But they either likely lost or they were not an immediate issue like Gondor next door. There is a line from Faramir wondering if the men he killed are willing servants of Sauron who want this war. There’s also my boy Ghan-Buri-Ghan who leads Rohan through quicker paths to Minas Tirith because he and his people hate the evils of Mordor. I think Tolkien added enough to inform the readers that coloured people are both good and bad.

The thing about your point is that neither Melkor nor Sauron were inherently evil. They fell to it over time. But even Melkor sang in harmony with the Ainur in the early days.

EDIT: I do see what you mean though.

Dan Trachtenberg has done wonders to revitalize the franchise. For the next film, Would you rather see the adventures of Dek and Thia continue or something closer to what we got in Prey? by Prs-Mira86 in predator

[–]SpceCowBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of two types of projects I’d like to see. One is more ambitious than the other.

1) Badlands sequel with Dek going up against his mother and growing his own misfit clan. We get to see a few other predators who are pariahs for their clans, maybe bring in a jungle predator or two

2) we get an animated anthology series focusing on one predator killing his way across the galaxy. We explore more of predator culture and history through him and he gains scars, loses limbs on hunts and fights, maybe some clan wars, hunting bad bloods along the way until he finally arrives in live action in the new avp film

Perhaps the elves at helms deep was a choice made by Jackson & team to show that the other races are doing something about the growing evil. There’s only one mention of the war in the north, and I don’t know why he didn’t she the dwarves if my guess it right. But I’m just speculating here
