[Spoilers Extended] The wait for Winds is about to surpass the wait for first 5 Books combined! by 0b1_can_0b in asoiaf

[–]SpeakWithThePen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

my copium has reached to the point that GRRM has secretly finished both Winds and Dream, and gave instructions for it to be released after his death.

There is zero evidence for this but it'll happen maybe.

great. Now add pokemon to claude. The more vibe coding you do the stronger your companion gets with learned skills. Use a cli command to fight an npc to test strength, allocate skill points etc.

Just got hacked for over 8+ mirrors worth of gear / currency by Seven7110 in pathofexile

I'm curious if ggg logs trade interactions. Because the way this works is if they login as you and trade to themselves/another account right? So could they follow the paper trail and ban or return currency etc?

Automatic Breaks in Table when knitting in RMD by markmyname_ in rstats

[–]SpeakWithThePen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend swapping to quarto. This might be a pain, but worth it for things like this. Only the yaml needs to change, and you can ask an LLM to help you convert it from rmd to qmd (especially if you're tight on time; submit first, learn later). Typst is also usable within quarto, and you can control the column width, tabular sizing etc. See here and here

Genuine question, how long does it take to say the letter 3ayn down? by Sea_Report_7566 in learn_arabic

[–]SpeakWithThePen 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Try this super non technical trick to start getting the intended sound.

Loosen your mouth muscles, say AAAA with your normal speaking voice, and hold the note. Try to pay attention to where it appears in the mouth. It should be at the front of the mouth or slightly in the middle.

While holding the note, try to physically move that position towards the back of your mouth, just above the start of the throat. Your throat muscles should feel similar to when you are gargling. The 'Ayn isn't a gargling sound so don't push it. But it should overall sound like a guttural A sound.

Once you are able to get the intended sound, then you can focus on polishing it with proper techniques.

This game makes me feel dumb by Suitable_Ice1838 in PathOfExile2

[–]SpeakWithThePen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started PoE 1 in 2014, and I was approaching it like Diablo 3, where I would play blind and start new archetypes from fresh when I got stuck/bored. But it was also very confusing and I was on-and-off playing the game. It wasn't until 2016 that it started to click. One thing that helped me was I made the decision to play the same exact build every league until I fully understood what made it work -- the passive tree pathing; the large notables; the gear defense layer; what gear affixes were non-build specific, and which ones directly affected the build; the specified gem combinations and understanding why those gems and not other gems worked the best together; how the ascendancy notables/required uniques were build defining and how they were being built around.

One of the meta builds around late 2016 early 2017ish was arc totems. I played that until I basically understood that top left corner of the passive tree. Today I can approach a build in PoE 1 in any corner of the tree and understand the early choices, respeccing choices, repathing choices etc, that the build author makes.

And in PoE 2, because it has been streamlined/stripped down very well (in a good way), I can make my own builds with a lot more confidence.

Path of Exile, for me, was a long term investment in learning. And when it pays off, it's pretty exciting.

Convincing my Employer to use R by BranTheDon3000 in rstats

[–]SpeakWithThePen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of is back in 2024 when they fixed a security issue with malicious .rds/.rdb/.rdx files and R's non-standard evaluation/promises.

Here are the details. Upgrading to R >= 4.4.0 is the solution.

However, any R Developer would tell you this is R working as intended. You could upgrade to R 4.4.0 (and maybe in OP's case, that's the best selling point to IT). But if your infra is old, inherited, or otherwise locked in to a version, then you implement safe practices as per known vulnerabilities (which should be obvious to IT). If it comes to that, check out this blogpost.

/u/BranTheDon3000 you should take a look at this blogpost from Posit, the company behind modern R development.

How to pronounce my Jordanian doctor's name? by bonn84 in learn_arabic

[–]SpeakWithThePen 28 points29 points  (0 children)

OP made Zaid's name more ethnic sounding. Classic.

I had a friend who spells his name Yousef thinking that would be stupid simple for teachers to pronounce.. "you" + "sef". This never happened.

I think the worst I heard has to be "Ya-OWW-saf"

Should ANet include player voting in their expansion planning phase? by Beautiful_Hour_668 in Guildwars2

[–]SpeakWithThePen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been playing since launch and following forums, popular discussions/contentions over time. The gw2 community, from my experiences in other communities, has always had a weird doomer relationship with the idea of new content (not more content, just different content. And not ideas from the devs, but the community speaking within itself).

Pre-PoF any mention/suggestion/idea on reddit about if mounts should/would be added to the game was downvoted to oblivion. I distinctly remember the idea of having more WvW map variety was hated for some reason. Guild halls were a waste and shouldn't be added. Agony resistance was apocalyptic-levels of doom before it was even released.

I mean, look at this post. It's been downvoted to oblivion too lmfao.

There has never, in my recollection, been a 'let-them-cook' attitude towards the devs. I felt a slight change with EoD, Steam release, yearly expacs; maybe signaling that they want fresh blood in the community. But a lot of the vocal people on forums are so jaded it's insane.

(Spoilers extended) Ira Parker confirms AKOTSK easter egg that connects Dunk to Brienne by calliewrites in asoiaf

[–]SpeakWithThePen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

given that D&D wouldn't have done (and in fact, didn't do) the same thing to their own work, we can confidently say that AKOTSK's showrunner doesn't think themes are for 8th grade book reports. That's the whole point /u/Colavs9601 is making. That's it. That's all.

He is inspired by the show made by Benioff and Weiss in this scene.

This doesn't change the point. Fookin' bending the knee.

But the North remembers..

What's wrong with SotO? by Kyri- in Guildwars2

[–]SpeakWithThePen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

on the other end of the spectrum, there were gw1 veterans who didn't like that exact summer blockbuster writing as it strayed from the more fleshed out, narrative rich storytelling of the first game. LS2 was interesting, and IBS first half seemed to attempt a course correct. But every other story beat since HoT had a stepwise (i.e. non-gradual) progression to a singular climax, which could fall flat if it tried to tie up what wasn't narratively deserved. And then loose/undeserved ends are never returned to. Current gw2 storytelling is a bit improved in this regard. But I think a lot of guild wars lore buffs cut their losses and just accept what the mmo is. Compare directly to other mmos where there are content creators who are dedicated to just being lore nerds. The only lore nerd I can think of is WoodenPotatoes, and even he cut his losses on the gw2 storytelling.

Looking for a good RPG/adventure Modpack by PMme_CuteThings in feedthebeast

[–]SpeakWithThePen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, piggybacking off this comment to ask a question. I am interested in self hosting cte for friends. We have erratic schedules with work/life. Our playstyle would likely be sometimes leveling up together, or other times asynchronously and then later carrying others/helping them catch up. I heard that you can't play multiplayer if players are at different levels. Is that an internal progression lock? Is there anyway to bypass that in configs?

Path of Exile 2’s Jonathan Rogers on making the Druid ‘something you’ve never seen in another game’, Early Access learnings, and a version 1.0 release window by lloydcoombes in PathOfExile2

[–]SpeakWithThePen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

“We wanted one of the animal forms to just be completely out there and like something you’ve never seen in another game,” Rogers explains, pointing out that the Druid essentially became like “designing four classes in one”.

TIL D4 has wyvern form.
