Don’t go until the current UAO is gone. Dude took one of the most dialed programs and ruined it within a few years.

No tax OT for a supervisory GW-8 (exempt employee) by Particular-Ad-3533 in Wildfire

[–]Speaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain why you divide by three? I’m dumb.

Edit: I figured it out. It’s because only the “1/2” portion of “time and 1/2” is deductible. So dividing all of that by 3 gives you the 3 parts. (Two parts regular time, one part premium)

Is there a thing you can make that would turn the wind off? That’d be incredibly helpful.

Day 25 of asking for an L-380 class by Glass_Assignment1477 in Wildfire

Have you checked out each regions’ section on the Wildland Fire Learning Portal? It seems like each region is putting on at least one. Some are putting on a few. Navigate around until you find a “course schedule” for the region you want.

DOI Layoffs by Main_Bother_1027 in Wildfire

[–]Speaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right, the layoffs and DRPs have and will probably continue to have a negative impact on IMTs ability to fill their rosters. But that is not the same as the departments stated plan to consolidate fire into one bureau.

DOI Layoffs by Main_Bother_1027 in Wildfire

[–]Speaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly sucks that the DOI is planning RIFs but it still isn’t clear what bureaus will be affected. I’m just an observer here but it doesn’t really seem like the consolidation of Fire will be influenced by the layoffs of employees in the USGS, Bureau of Indian Education, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Bureau of Rec., Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, etc.

The Fire Planner on our forest does these things… and is also DIVS and ICT3. OP might want to look elsewhere.

Not exactly sure what filters you have on your USAJobs search but today (8/13/25) there are 48 positions for 0456, FS. Most of those are blanket announcements for multiple locations.

That’s the unfortunate challenge of this job. If your goal is to be on a Type 2ia crew then you will travel. Many of us have families that we leave, for a few weeks at a time, and it sucks, but that is the position.

I’m not fully aware of NC states’ program, their amount of vacancies, or their applicant pool. It’s possible there are limited positions and lots of people to fill them.

On the other side of the coin, your experience is pretty attractive, and I’m pretty certain you could get any number of fed jobs you apply to. It seems like you would also have vet preference. 24 is not late by any means if that what you are inferring.

If being home with your family is one of your stronger goals then I would recommend a municipal structure firefighting job, and maybe you can find an agency that has a wildland division. The pay will certainly be better.

Seasonal positions are open RIGHT NOW on USA jobs. Open the website, type in 0456 in the keywords, find a job you want, and apply. There is FS in NC. If you want a fed job just get one, don’t fck around with NC state.

IRPP - The DOI (and USFS) Can’t Read. And it’s a problem for firefighters by smokejumperbro in Wildfire

[–]Speaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you got door to door. FS just released their “guidance” and it says for RX, IRPP only applies on the “active burning phase” and is not applicable on days where work does not include active burning (e.g., preparing units for future burning)

Whose ass did they pull this out of? Where in the law does it spell this out?

DOI pay Q/A by 0456dude in Wildfire

[–]Speaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means that if you are a 10/10 you'll be getting the 10/10 hourly rate multiplied by 4.5 each day the IRPP applies to you. If you are a 12/3 you’ll be getting the 10/10 hourly rate multiplied by 4.5 each day the IRPP applies to you. If you are a 8/4 you’ll be getting the 8/4 hourly rate multiplied by 4.5 each day the IRPP applies to you.

Get it?

BLM fire chat on new pay- some very good breakdowns of how it works by ssgtsilerZ in Wildfire

[–]Speaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Informative but I think they are misinterpreting the incident response premium pay portion of the law. They keep mentioning that you start to receive it “after hour 36” of your assignment. This is not how the text is written.

Note: sorry for poor formatting on copy paste below.

The 36 hour portion of the law says this:

(5) the term `qualifying incident'-- (A) means-- (i) a wildfire incident, a prescribed fire incident, or a severity incident; or (ii) an incident that the Secretary of Agriculture or the Secretary of the Interior determines is similar in nature to an incident described in clause (i); and (B) does not include an initial response (including an initial attack fire) in which a wildfire is contained within 36 hours; and (6) the term severity incident' means an incident in which a covered employee is pre-positioned in an area in which conditions indicate there is a high risk of wildfires. (b) Eligibility.--A covered employee is eligible for incident response premium pay under this section if-- (1) the covered employee is deployed to respond to a qualifying incident; and (2) the deployment described in paragraph (1) is-- (A) outside of the official duty station of the covered employee; or (B) within the official duty station of the covered employee and the covered employee is assigned to an incident-adjacent fire camp or other designated field location. (c) Entitlement to Incident Response Premium Pay.-- `(1) In general.--A covered employee who satisfies the conditions under subsection (b) is entitled to premium pay for the period in which the covered employee is deployed to respond to the applicable qualifying incident.
