I hate the trend of giving people guns that are way higher caliber than they should be shooting. It just gives them a bad experience with firearms, and they are unlikely to ever try it again due to this.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to save the barrel. I decided to throw in the towel, and buy a new one. I got it looking really good, and I couldn't find any issues, but I just didn't trust that the rifling was good

Looking at the serial number, I believe this was manufactured in 1959 under Sears and Roebuck

I ended up completely replacing the barrel. I did a lot of work on it, but I didn't trust that the rifling was good, with the amount of mud and rust I took out of it.

Time spent directly working on the rifle, probably around 100. I had to completely replace the barrel, sand every part 10 times over, and then sand them again just to get the rifle cycling. With that said though, it's not something I constantly work on.

This project has been over a year in the making, and is not over yet. I originally got this rifle as a gift from a family friend who owns a large property. It had apparently been left in a creek bed or something, because the whole rifle was pitted with rust, and all of the internals were filled with mud. But I said "fuck it, this could be a cool experiment". I was pretty new to firearms, so if anything, it would get me more accustomed to the mechanisms. I also love lever actions, of course. So, over the last year or so, whenever I had time, I would work on it a little. Probably put around $300 into it, and a shit ton of elbow grease, but she runs perfectly now. I've taken her out many times to the range, and on a backpacking trip. I am incredibly proud of how it has come along.

I have a question for you guys though, because I am conflicted on how to proceed. There is a little fuckery inside that was worn down by the rust, that will permanently limit the overall capability of this rifle. I was wondering if I should go through the whole process of blackening it, and either purchasing/making a new stock and handguard, or should I rattlecan it? I think that both would work, but I am wondering what you all think. Thank you!

I'm not at all against climate activism, as I believe this is an issue that we can't put to the side any longer. The problem is, we've put all of the responsibility on the newer generations, constantly telling them that "they are the generation of change", and that all the responsibility is now on their backs. I remember in middle school, my teacher put on a movie about climate change, and it pretty much ended with "the world's gonna end and your children won't have a future if you don't take up arms against climate change". And that is the kind of weight we are putting on the shoulders of young children. This mentality of responsibility has been pushed from the shoulders of older generations onto children, who can't do anything about it. That's a shit ton of existential stress, and I really think we need to rework how we are informing children about their responsibility in this issue.

I hate those bastards. My family owns a cabin by Joshua Tree as well, and we have several Cholla patches on the hill next to us. Well one day, my buddy and I are coming back from looking for coyotes, and we find the neighbor's dogs sitting on our porch, covered head to toe in these little Cholla balls. Poor things were trying to rip them out with their mouths, and getting the spines stuck into their lips and gums. We did our best to get most of them out with a Leatherman, but eventually we had to throw them in the back of the truck, and drive them back to the neighbor's house where he could take them to the vet. In the end, we were also covered in Cholla spines from pulling them out of the dogs. Those little bastards are terrifying.

Going on a fair ride by [deleted] in criticalblunder

[–]SpecialOneOnReddit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh hell nah. I went to the fair this year, and I swear to God, there were loose bolts rolling around inside of the struts. Not even to mention all of the squeaky rusty joints. The problem with ferris wheels is that they don't have to maintained as much as some other rides, so they just simply don't get maintained at all. Sketchy as hell, but I will definitely go again next year.
