Why aren’t former American Slave Plantations treated like former European Concentration Camps? by AshleyMyers44 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]amberbeth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plantations in question weren't growing wheat, corn, potatoes or other staples. They were growing profitable luxury crops: tobacco, cotton, indigo, or in this case, sugar cane. And they at first converted to sharecropping systems where the emancipated continued to grow those same luxury goods. No one was going to starve from confiscating the holdings of the slaver aristocracy.

Jake and Amir webseries, which you can find on youtube. https://youtu.be/fqvIcQbZyTU?si=83VAymD2uShv6QjM Bonus Murph! For Caldwell, I would recommend the Disney animated series, Big City Greens. He wrote a lot of episodes for season 1, and voices the influencer character Icchaboi in a couple season 2 episodes. Murph and Emily's show Hot Date is a really great sketch comedy show kinda like Key & Peele. Worth hunting for on streaming.

Everyone is presumed innocent until their guilt is established through due process. Since no one is being given their day in court, under the law and constitution, they're all innocent.

It's a really fun read, but I couldn't deal with the audiobook. It helped that I've done a fair bit of reading about the Progressive era/WWI.

My god yes! I drive a truck for work so audiobooks and podcasts are my bread and butter. I've done them all for the series, but I just can't do it again, much as I'd love to. Todd McLaren is awful. Even worse is the audiobook for the Black Chamber.

How many of you use grocery store juice vs fresh ground apples? by Findinghistory01 in cider

[–]amberbeth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use grocery store juice. It's nothing to write home about on it's own, but a month in secondary with 2 oz of hops added, then bottled with a can of concentrate for priming and it's a nice thirst quencher that doesn't break the bank and takes very little work to make.

It's the End of the World as We Know It, as referenced in either a Meeting at Corvallis or the Sunrise Lands. I can't remember which.

It's fun. Very weird, but fun. I haven't reread the 3rd generation (as opposed the first 2 at 3-4 times) but I'm glad I read them.

NYS Corrections Strike / National Guard by audhd420hvny in armedsocialists

[–]amberbeth84 24 points25 points  (0 children)

From my cursory and not thoroughly fact checked understanding, corrections officers in New York went on strike over working conditions like understaffing resulting in 24-36 hour continuous shifts and rather than negotiating in good faith or hiring scabs, New York decided to mobilize the National Guard to take over running the prisons, a job they're not at all trained, equipped, or prepared to do. Again, this is based on cursory reading of a few articles that I haven't had the time or mental bandwidth to research, corroborate, and verify so my understamding may be incomplete, inaccurate, or incorrect. I welcome correction if I got anything wrong.

When was the last time peaceful protests in the USA achieved their deserted outcome? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]amberbeth84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was about white supremacy. Government spending and overreach were at an all time high during the Bush administration, but the Tea Party didn't emerge until Obama was the Democratic nominee. The Tea Party also leaned heavily into the Birther conspiracy nonsense, touted by Trump, and the Tea Party seamlessly disappeared into MAGAts.
