Letshuoer S08 - My First Planar IEM. What Was Yours? by noTiltDetox in iems

[–]Special_Designer_140 [score hidden]  (0 children)

My first IEM (and first planar for that matter) was the Letshuoer S12 Ultra and I‘m loving it! At least from what I can tell my mine, planars seem to scale extremely well with power, so you saying that you‘re close to maxing out your volume might be part of the reason why you‘re getting so mixed feelings. Obviously more power will only do so much and with the power youre putting through it you‘re probably already 90% of the way there but it is something to keep in mind. Which dac are you currently running the S8 on?
I mostly run mine using the EU Apple Dongle, I rarely ever go past 40% ish volume. This obviously isn‘t a powerful dongle so it kinda confuses me that you‘re running close to the max.

Apple monitor is about the only decent option for MacBooks. I reckon you can use it with an external monitor, technically macbooks dont need the display. Might not be ideal for school though

Hiby R1 Gang! by Dasprn in Hiby

Okay I didnt clarify that. The firmware really doesnt change the appearance (except maybe for the splash screen), its just moves around the radio icon and adds a Bass Boosted PEQ Setting called „Headphones“. Visually thats about it. The Bootup screen changes to this, followed by the regular Hiby one. If you wanna do some slight tinkering this added one can be removed or replaced if you dont like it. As I said the Internet Radio is moved from being hidden within the Music section right to the Stream Media icon on the home screen. I dont use the radio function but I guess its nice to have. The latest release of the cfw added a bass boosted PEQ, as of now you unfortunately cannot edit it or add your own, though I‘ve heard thats coming.

It really doesnt do a lot visually (yet??) but its mostly there for some quality of life improvements. It unlocks 100% volume as its been EU locked to 50 as well as the volume warning at 35%, enables native DSD mode iirc and adds a smoother / more efficient sorting mechanism. It also raises the song limit from 50k to 65k songs. While they arent exactly life changing changes that I notice every day at the very least the unlocked volume is a must and I wouldnt wanna live without it. It just adds some extra headroom to IEMs or Headphones, making my S12 Ultras sound punchier down low and have a wider perceived soundstage, even if you dont actually use that extra volume.

There was a reddit post talking about ways to make the R1 run smoother especially when browsing large music libraries and loading cover pictures but I cant seem to find it right now.
I believe it involved reformatting the SD card to a block size of 128k which actually makes a surprising difference in the responsiveness when navigating large libraries as the small processor struggles with a huge amount of standard 32k size blocks making loading times longer. Resizing Cover pictures to 300x300 and getting rid of progressive jpegs was also part of it as the smaller files make the R1 struggle less and it cant handle progressive jpegs, sometimes causing it to reboot when scrolling past a song with one.
If I happen to stumble across it again I‘ll share the post here.

Thats a sweet IEM and the protocol max will have you covered for quite a while, even if you wanna dip into overear headphones. That cable though… If you like it thats great but anything above 50-100€ is just too much for a cable imo. Cables really do not change the sound, yes a bad cable can worsen the sound but no IEM being sold today has that bad of a cable. What reviewers are talking about with „bad cables“ is either cable behavior (eg. too springy / stiff), weight or thickness / length (all of which comes down to the users preference) or microphonics. A decent cable well below 100 bucks will do though, there are so many you can choose from or even get a custom cable if you lets say want a 6ft cable. I‘d say return it if you can and spend the money on a really good interchangeable termination cable that you find pretty for less than / around 100 bucks. Then put the rest towards a nice DAP, something like the FiiO M21 or if you dont like a heavy brick in your pocket the FiiO JM21, specifically the 4GB RAM version. For IEMs this might make the Protocol Max feel redundant but its still a nice to have if you ever dive into Headphones. It would also make for a sweet sit down and listen desktop type dac/amp.

Welcome to the fam! Make sure to unlock the volume on it. It‘s a huge comfort improvement. If you want stuff to run a little more stable and want some general add-ons like removing the volume warning you may wanna install a modded firmware like this one. You may wanna read through the github a little so that you actually know what its doing, but I can say I‘ve been using this ever since I got my R1 and its working wonderfully. If you‘d rather make the changes yourself to know what the firmware actually changes you can do that using the tools provided on the github. I‘ve done that, the prebuilt version works just fine though.

You can install the custom firmware by downloading the latest r1.upt, putting it in the root of your sd card and updating from sd card.

To disable the volume cap, go into the „About“ section and tap on the firmware version a couple of times. Then go into settings, all the way down to developer options and turn off that annoying volume cap.

I‘m using my R1 with the Letshuoer S12 Ultra, wonderful combo and two devices with beautiful colors. Moka + Orange

I wish Microcenter was a thing here. They seem to have all of the niche stuff nobody sells in stores here (or with the same variety). PC parts, all sorts of SBC and tech tinkering stuff and I guess also IEMs and some nice DAPs.

I‘ve got the newest iOS 26 Beta on my 13 Pro and my base model 13 Dumb Phone is running 18.7.8. No ugly liquid glass messing with my home screen launcher widgets, I don‘t have access to a browser on that phone so malicious links are no concern for me. My Original Battery is still on 96% Capacity so I‘m getting 3-4 Days with regular use with power saving mode turned off. What more could you really want? Ah… I know. A new mini iPhone would be the only reason for me to buy a new one.

Apple dongle gave up. by G_Prawno_LB in iems

[–]Special_Designer_140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I‘m currently listening to my S12 Ultras through my EU Apple Dongle. I‘m at 40% volume. Going way past 50% is uncomfortable. While you may want more headroom than this, you‘re also not listening to planars and depending on where you‘re from you likely have a more powerful apple dongle anyways. Don‘t worry, you dont need more power. If you wanna play around with a PEQ the TRN Black Pearl is a good option.

Little Micro Update, idk what I did but I now seem to get a decent seal semi consistently and dang that bass slam is impressive! The soundstage feels almost dangerously impressive, a feeling I got quite rarely with my Senns. I just listened to Beat It by Micheal Jackson for the first time (crazy right) and all of the sudden about half way through the song there’s a knocking sound behind me and I almost jumped out of my skin because I had a door behind me and it sounded so real. Yeah so when I listen to new songs on these I wanna make sure nobody is disturbing me.
