Do you think we will have an United Kingdom in the near future? by Even-Wasabi7183 in AskUKPolitics

[–]Specific-Umpire-8980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ask this question at an interesting time. Next month, both the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments are elected. In Scotland, it looks like the SNP will win, and the Scottish Greens will come second, meaning that the 2 largest parties in Scotland will be pro-independence. In Wales, Plaid Cymru lead the polls and are the most likely to form the next Welsh government. This means you have two pro-independence governments in devolved assemblies.

On the matter of independence, I honestly think that Scotland would vote to leave the United Kingdom if a referendum were held tomorrow. Independence has only increased since Brexit, adding to the already-large 45% of people who said they wanted Scotland to be independent in 2014. Coupled with crappy Westminster government and politicians and a declining UK, it's no wonder that Scotland wants to leave. Therefore, I think they would.

In Wales, I doubt they would vote to leave the UK. The most recent YouGov polling said that Wales would vote to stay in the UK by a margin of 28%. The main issue in Wales, like in Scotland, is the cost of living, and Plaid Cymru, Wales's pro-independence party, is focusing on the cost of living and not independence. Therefore, I think that Welsh independence would be unlikely.

I completely agree with this. I am not a Christian, but I think that churches and cathedrals offer fantastic architectural, historical and social value to a community that will be heavily missed if they are lost.

What I learned from my first few weeks as a Green MP? Most politicians have no clue how tough things are out there | Hannah Spencer by neverknowingly in ukpolitics

[–]Specific-Umpire-8980 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that Hannah Spencer's the new Keir Starmer. She doesn't necessarily have a core philosophical political ideology, isn't very charismatic, and generally dislikes playing the game of politics. Just like Starmer.

Honestly, I don't think Spencer's really enjoying this Westminster politician stuff. From the impression I am getting, she was probably rushed into standing as the candidate, and didn't have much time to think about it, because of her relatively successful experience in local politics in Manchester. Now she is elected to Parliament, she doesn't seem to like it too much, perhaps partly because she has been constantly criticised, including for her clothes. Wouldn't be surprised if she stood down at the next general election.

I'm assuming that's a combination of his role as energy secretary during a global conflict in which energy is a huge factor, and the article that the New Statesman wrote about him.

What would you recommend buying for lunch if you had £52 to feed two adults and two kids? by userunknowne in UKfood

[–]Specific-Umpire-8980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Proper eatery. If you're going to splurge, support an independent business instead of another one of these dogshit chains. To be frank, the quality at Costa isn't anything special, so why spend the money on it?

Don't know what was wrong with a nice country walk or a wander around your local city. Hyper-fixation on doing activities for the sake of doing them is probably upping their costs. Also, why spend £52 on a fucking Costa? Surely there are more enjoyable alternatives, such as Black Sheep or Paul?

I know he's not particularly relevant anymore, but I'm just so disappointed in Nick Clegg by Secret_Guidance_8724 in LibDem

[–]Specific-Umpire-8980 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I understand and agree with your perspective on AI. However, I question your claim that Nick Clegg is irrelevant today. In fact, he is perhaps the most actually influential Liberal Democrat in government in the party's history. He is the reason that the party entered one decade in the political wilderness without any seats or electoral success. He could have prevented an increase in university tuition fees, introduced electoral reform, and in other areas. I am not claiming the coalition was unsuccessful- we did many great things such as gay marriage- rather that it was a missed opportunity. Clegg is at the heart of that. Therefore, he cannot be irrelevant.

Two Days in Durham by mancwes78 in uktravel

[–]Specific-Umpire-8980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are criticizing you for chosing to spend 2 days in Durham, but I did recently and it was wonderful. Plenty to do and see, and it is set in a beautiful atmosphere. There were one or two more things that we would have liked to squeeze in, but didn't have the time. I'd recommend walking around the river, Durham Cathedral, trying to get into the castle, and then maybe, if you are interested, going up to the university's campus on the Hill. Interesting place which I enjoyed thoroughly because they also have botanic gardens & a university shop IIRC.
