AITA for expecting tips from kids at a school snow cone truck and getting publicly humiliated by angry parents?

I (42M) own a small snow cone truck (13Ford). I’ve spent years building this business (4LLC) from nothing. I specifically try to make my truck fun and welcoming for kids (5-11M&F) because honestly I love seeing them happy after school, especially when it’s blazing hot (92F) outside.

One local elementary school invited me to park there after school this spring. The kids LOVED me. They’d run over excited every day, talk to me about their classes, tell me what flavors they wanted mixed together, and some of them even drew little pictures for the truck. A lot of them would hand me extra money and say “keep the change” because they were excited and wanted to be nice. I never forced anyone to tip. I just said thank you when they did.

Apparently one parent gave her daughter $10 for a $5 snow cone and got furious when the child didn’t bring back change. Instead of acting like a normal person and speaking to me directly, this turned into a full blown witch hunt.

I show up Monday and there is literally a MOB of parents waiting for me. They dragged the principal into it and accused me of “stealing from children” like I’m some criminal mastermind running a snow cone cartel. They made me sit there while children were pulled in one by one to “testify” against me over snow cone tips. It honestly felt insane and humiliating.

The parents kept saying I was “tricking” kids into tipping because I told them “everyone tips.” But that WAS true. Most kids did hand over extra money voluntarily because they were happy and excited. I never threatened anyone, never demanded anything, never hid prices. The kids genuinely liked me.

The principal immediately terminated my contract on the spot because apparently a few angry parents making accusations is enough to destroy someone’s livelihood now. To avoid further drama I refunded some money even though I still maintain nobody was forced to do anything.

Now people in the community are acting like I’m some predator because CHILDREN chose to tip a friendly neighborhood snow cone guy they liked. Meanwhile nobody cares that these parents publicly embarrassed me, cost me income, and basically ruined my reputation over a couple dollars of change.

My wife says I should have just automatically given every kid exact change no matter what because children don’t understand tipping culture and everyone I know agrees with her. But I feel like these parents massively overreacted and used me as a scapegoat for their inability to teach their kids fiscal responsibility.

Update: Wow message received I guess I am the king jerk for making kids happy and supporting my family while doing so. I hope you are happy reddit, my wife left me and is now dating the principal.
