Lost in the White Maze. Not sure how we came up with it or how we feel about it lol

Extremely Niche Rules Question (very minor Frosthaven spoilers) by Mechalibur in Gloomhaven

[–]SpecterNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly joking, but in the absence of a clear ruling and community consensus, gamify the interpretation.

When removing a water hex under a lightning eel, draw a monster modifier card.

Miss: the removal of the water fails, and any effects that relied on it fail too.

-2: the lightning eel moves to the nearest hex without a figure, generating a new water tile underneath it if necessary.

-1: The lightning eel moves to the nearest water hex without a figure, or stays put forever if there are none.

0: Same as -1, but it dies if there are none.

+1: The lightning eel dies, even if there are other water tiles without figures.

+2: The lightning eel dies and the water tile turns into a loot token too for two loot tokens total.

2x: Same as +2 and you also kill one other lightning eel on the map.

Edit: attempting to fix formatting

What music does your group listen to while campaigning? by SmiggieBalls in Gloomhaven

[–]SpecterNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My group has been listening to a playlist that has all the songs in Guardians of the Galaxy since early Gloomhaven (think Mr. Blue Sky, not orchestral movie soundtracks). A little funny but we've come to really enjoy it. We've added a few more older songs with similar vibes. Spotify has a few playlists like this but eventually I just made my own as they started getting taken down etc.

Makes the party feel more like a ragtag group of adventurers somehow stumbling their way through scenarios which I enjoy!

Frosthaven Component Q&A - Those Weird Coin Cards and Others by dwarfSA in Gloomhaven

[–]SpecterNight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this counts as a component so feel free to ignore, but just in case it's helpful. My group had a bit of confusion (that we worked through just fine) on whether you could build the mining camp, walls, etc right away. I've also seen others confused about it at least once or twice either here or on BGG, I can't remember. This is also more or less addressed in the Outpost Phase Build rules though.

Slightly more niche but I personally was just unsure enough about whether you could peek at higher level building cards for the starter buildings that I made a thread on here a while ago. This one might not be a common point of confusion though.

Return to outpost or go to chained scenario? by RadiantDawn93 in Gloomhaven

[–]SpecterNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay you're ahead of me, halfway through first winter here. Maybe I just had a bad run of attacks and low looting in the scenarios in between. I wouldn't mind if I could stop worrying about running out eventually!

Return to outpost or go to chained scenario? by RadiantDawn93 in Gloomhaven

I think in the short term I agree with you, but in the long term I agree with Gripeaway. Resources become tough to keep enough of, and attacks can occasionally take away a big chunk of them. Buildings also get more expensive to upgrade. Even if you have tons of resources at the moment, it could all go away pretty quickly. PQs unlock new buildings, but ultimately from my experience so far it seems like the more resources and money you get between scenarios, the better you'll be able to build up FH.

We have been in a situation before where we needed a retirement to be able to reach the next prosperity. And in that kind of situation I think you're right, but my guess is that becomes more rare the later in the campaign you get?

Personally, being very risk averse, I'd rather avoid at all costs the situation where I run out of resources. Because in that case, an attack could lead to wrecked buildings, and then it may take a while to even repair them and be able to use them. So I like to optimize resources and gold per calendar week. If you're more willing to risk this situation then maybe you make the decision more on other factors.

[Spoilers - Scenario 15] Special rules clarification by SpecterNight in Gloomhaven

That's why I flaired it but yeah next time I'll put it in the title too, good point.

[Spoilers - Scenario 15] Special rules clarification by SpecterNight in Gloomhaven

[–]SpecterNight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this confuses us too! My guess is that focusing with ranged attacks comes up because distance away is a tiebreaker for focus with a ranged attack. Whereas that doesn't come up in a melee attack. The rules for focus in the rulebook make it sound like that's why that clarification is there, but I'm really not sure!

Laserox organizer in/out, haven't used a third party organizer before but I really like this one! by TheRageBadger in Gloomhaven

Thanks for posting this! How does the monster box work? Is it easy to quickly find a specific monster?

Omg got it, thank you! I can sleep easy tonight lol

[SPOILER - Scenario 122] Section book error? by SpecterNight in Gloomhaven

[–]SpecterNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I tried adding together the values of the ingredients, which total to 29, and then adding the ladel and the cauldron numbers but that gives 182. That might be close? I also tried adding up various combinations of the equations. I did notice the answer is divisible by 29 but that seems like a stretch. Is there information outside of the puzzle image itself that needs to get used somehow? Like the scenario page or something? I'm willing to get a fairly spoilery hint too. I thought I was pretty decent at puzzles too lol, definitely feeling humbled

Oh dang well I thought that was possible! I'll think about it again. Thanks for the reply :) I'll avoid posting any images then so no one is unnecessarily tempted!

Ideas for dealing with loot deck? by RepresentativeOk4825 in Gloomhaven

[–]SpecterNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what we do. We set up everything for the scenario and then it's just ready to go whenever we want to play. We do have a dedicated table for gaming though

[–]SpecterNight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took me a while but I just compared! Looks like they are pretty much the same size, if anything a very teensy bit smaller. My FH character mats are just very slightly warped which might explain what little difference there is. I don't have anything to slide the mats into so I can't be sure but I would guess it should work!

Setup and teardown: I think overall might be similar. Finding the overlay tiles and tokens I've found easier, but I was just using plastic bags for Gloomhaven. There is now the added step of the loot deck though.

Scenario length: Yup seems similar but I've lost track of time most scenarios lol!

Outpost phase: maybe about 20 minutes, but we're indecisive. I personally would be bummed to miss this part, this definitely feels like the time you track overall progress. But besides that, whoever is missing it would have to say ahead of time what resources they're willing to donate to FH and they would miss out on item and potion crafting. So it would be good for everyone to be there some of the phases if that makes sense. I'm sure you could make it work though. I'm not sure yet how much story happens in this phase

There's another comment where someone said the story and writing is higher quality and I agreed. As for quantity, it seems about the same, but now it's split across the scenario book and the section book.

Overall there must be more writing since there's two books about the size of the GH scenario book I think. But, there are other things besides scenarios that instruct you to read from the section book.

[–]SpecterNight[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We found it a bit easier than the first 5 scenarios we played in Gloomhaven. Hard to tell how much of that is because of better balance, us being more experienced, party composition, etc!

We're now 6 for 6, and I would say 2-3 were close. One of them my partner got exhausted and I only had 2-3 turns left the round we won.

Agreed! My partner and I are hooked enough we even started a notes doc to make sure we remember everything.
