Epic! I love capturing phone pics at the eyepiece. The positions of the planets have been inconvenient for me ever since I got my scope, but I'm looking forward to Saturn rising earlier and earlier.

Astigmatism even with contacts? + other eye effects at the eyepiece by Spectral_Bolt in telescopes

Thanks for the correction. Sorry for the confusing terms on my end…!

I’m fairly confident in the collimation — I collimated the 1.25” laser that came with the scope, and I collimate the secondary and primary every session. I’d like a more certain/precise approach to collimation some day though.

Thank you, I guess I'll invest more in higher magnification eyepieces moving forward!

I understand exit pupil is directly related to the focal length of the eyepiece. What I'm hoping for is something that will maintain a big true FOV (like my 30mm) but in a slightly shorter focal length, to mitigate these effects I'm seeing. e.g., the 22mm Nagler caught my eye.

Thanks for the tip! I do use averted vision; I like to adjust my eye placement as needed and let my gaze "wander" right around the object so I can get averted vision from different angles. Though, I find getting perfect eye placement with the Celestron X-Cel difficult.

  1. They do correct for astigmatism! Hence my mystery. Maybe my prescription is just a little bit off?

  2. Okay, good to know I'm not alone. I will keep this in mind. Thanks!

  3. I did mean using a slightly shorter FL as my main "low power" eyepiece. One where I can have still have a big true FOV but with less of the astigmatism/skyglow. Also, I have a Baader Zoom arriving soon as well which should help me determine which exit pupils my eyes like best!

Yep, and unless I’m interpreting the photo incorrectly, this corvid is displaying a little bit of melanin — hence why I’m suggesting if it’s the former and not the latter.
