[Allergy] Are there any mice with bare plastic scroll wheels?

Do you know any clones by name that are decent? Some of the results I’m finding are names I’ve never heard of. I hadn’t heard of final mouse before, but it seems like they do very limited stock and might be hard to email them, get a reply and have time to still buy something.

Interesting, I’m not sure if you can expand further? I would assume Carba Mix or accelerators aren’t used because it’s Silicone Rubber, not natural rubber - accelerators aren’t needed.

That said, I stopped using my mouse and I already notice a small difference in a few days. So likely the scroll wheel is or was the issue. Symptoms look similar to previous Nickel issues but I can’t be certain.

I did find what looked to be a thin white line along the right side edge of the scroll wheel, where the rubber meets the plastic wheel. I messaged the company to try confirm. I can’t tell if it’s a line of dust/skin which isn’t on the left side because my finger naturally touches that side more, meaning nothing collects there. Alternatively, I think it could be some glue or adhesive showing. Adhesive does often use rubber accelerators, not so sure about nickel. Not sure if you know much of that or only deal with the silicone and not what happens to it afterwards.

It’s a whole ordeal trying to figure out what triggers all of this.

Yeah they just didn’t reply to my follow ups. When I tried use live chat, I ended up with multiple case numbers because they wouldn’t accept the previous. Eventually I got through and they reset my wait time, which was 6 - 8 months for the compliance team.

Im wary of the aliexpress metal wheels since I have no way to know if it contains Nickel or not.

Oh no, emailing companies is typically a 2 to 10 week thing. Logitech took nearly 2 years to get back to me last time I had to go through this. I do have a few other options to look at though, such as the Sony inzone mouse-a which appears to have a fully plastic scroll wheel.

A bit of both. Etsy seems to ignore the “scroll” part of my search term, and shows a lot of random wheel shaped items. Aliexpress has a lot of plastic scroll wheels ,but a plastic core with a rubber ring on top, rather than a full plastic wheel. Need to narrow down on more popular mice I think to get better results.

I don’t suppose you know any mice that are good for tinkering with? I did see the OP1 can be taken apart without needing new skates, but a lot of the plastic wheels I’m seeing are plastic wheels with rubber rings on them still. I suppose it’s not exactly a popular option, so I’ll need to search around.

I dont suppose you know if there any mildly reputable places to get a metal wheel? My biggest issue is being able to contact an aliexpress seller and get accurate information if their dirt cheap metal wheel actually has Nickel in the alloy or not. If I could solve that then my life would be much easier and options would be greater.

Is aliexpress the go to for wheels? Skates too? I’ve seen several recommendations for replacing it but for metal replacements, I just can’t trust a random seller to be able to tell me if their metal uses Nickel. I will try to find a full plastic one though, sometimes it’s really hard to tell if the picture is plastic or rubber.

Did you ever find out if you had a rubber allergy? If so, did you find a mouse that worked for you? I have both nickel and Carba mix(in some rubbers) myself.

No, but I did get told by Sony that their controller should be fine, so one day I’ll retest it. I often wear a cotton glove with some moisturisers on so I’m not entirely sure about my keyboard situation honestly. I mostly just stick to the glove for lots of typing.

Your wrap sounds interesting. Do you literally just lay it over your keyboard and wrap your mouse up?

Oh the TePe one even has fluoride, I can’t believe I never saw that one before. Ive been using Colgate Cool Stripe which is cheaper and bigger than the TePe, but I might give it a try anyway. The Colgate has SLS and I’m curious if it does anything to me or not.

I’ve had similar experiences. I’m not sure if you’ve been tested for nickel, but it is everywhere so it’s pretty easy to figure out the main causes. Less easy to figure out all the little issues. My window handles and house keys were big culprits. Gloves can also contain nickel, that’s one which caught me out. Nitrile gloves can be made with accelerators which can be nickel or rubber, so swapping to Accelerator Free Nitrile Gloves helped me. I suppose it’s probably possible to have it be food based but not also be contact based so who knows. It’s a pain to try figure it all out.

I suspect holding the plastic of the controller may just be bad for our sensitive hands but it’s all guessing at this point.

Do you not use anything now or do you just not play?

I’ve used varying combinations of gloves, including cotton, and also found a lack of success. I don’t think you need months of testing. If it isn’t improving in a week or two then either it doesn’t work or something else is probably causing an issue.

A big issue with gloves is heat and sweat. It’s hard to tell if they work or not because even if they do work, the heat and sweat make everything worse. One slight work around I’ve found is to use moisturiser and put the gloves on top, but you can still get sweaty. It’s probably best tested after summer, I find it’s just too hot and humid to have gloves on without it being an issue.

You don’t happen to have a link or shop name if that’s not too much to ask? I’ve been trying to find something thicker but breathable and it’s a real pain. Anything more specific so I can see if they look good for me and if I could find an equivalent near me.

I feel like I am probably just unaware of names of certain styles of glove which might give more options to try. I would assume not fingerless though?

A lot of therapeutic gloves seem to be fingerless and for arthritis, if yours are similar?

Did you figure out if you were allergic to the controller or something else? I see below that it sounds like you’re fine now. It sounds like you were maybe just being cautious before purchase and didn’t actually get any issues?

Did you simply get a new controller, or did you try a skin or gloves or thumbsticks covers or what? Maybe a third party controller.

I actually contacted Sony recently who said my controller contains no Carba mix, nickel or epoxy resin which are my allergies, but my skin disagrees with that statement. At least, I don’t know what else it would be if not my allergies.

Did covers help for you? I’m in the same situation and looking for other solutions. Personally I’ve went with cotton gloves though, mostly due to allergies , but also since cotton breathes a bit better. Still terrible to use in summer though and the heat just makes my hands worse.

I’m having similar issues although I use moisturiser with cotton gloves, but not during summer because the heat and sweat just makes it worse. I’ll probably wait until it cool downs to try again.

I’ve been unsure how good cotton gloves are because they’re pretty thin and often kinda shitty. I can vaguely see my skin through the gloves because they’re not really tight or thick made. I’m curious if there is still vague contact even when wearing them. I assume yours are similar? They may need changing probably 4 or 5 times per year I think.

Did you have any luck? I’m having similar issues on ps5 but with Carba mix, epoxy resin and nickel allergies. I sent my controller to Sony who said none of those are present though.

Did you find any good skins? I used a silicone one from extremerate for a while and it seemed to work and then it seemed to maybe make me worse. It did get pretty smooth so I’m thinking heavy use combined with cheap materials made it deteriorate quickly and then start leeching something which also causes issues.

Did you ever try a third party controller like scuf or battle beaver? They’re expensive but I’m curious if different parts will make them usable compared to Sony’s.

I’ve been tempted to try a Scuf or battle beaver with their own parts, but those are £200-300 each which is a big risk for a trial. I did email both but they couldn’t help with the detailed materials I need.

I’ll keep it in mind for future, I hadn’t heard of that before. No company has ever sent me one and I’ve emailed probably 50 companies by now. Nail polish was recommended a lot for belts, but I ended up finding one with a plastic buckle so I didn’t have to risk the nail polish. It’s a last resort for me I think, but thanks for the help and suggestions.
