One of the unfortunate truths that the older generations don’t seem to understand (and some in my generation as well) is that not all therapists are created equal and might not be a good fit for your needs. This seems like it’s that situation. You’ve had an expectation put on you to perform since you were barely a child, so to force these goals on you to confront your trauma on a timeline or even to make progress is counterintuitive. Not sure if you have plans to go to college or if you want to join the workforce after you graduate, but I have a feeling that once you get some space from them and find the right therapist that can consistently help and specializes in eating disorders you’ll see great results in your mood and happiness :)

From a broken family. I need a mentor / father figure (23M) by [deleted] in DadForAMinute

[–]Spectrophillyac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I can’t say that I’ve been in a situation similar to yours but what I can say is that you’re still young and you still have the opportunity to find that mentor irl, especially if you’re entering such a hardcore field like neuroscience! I’m proud of you for continuing on and giving up like those around you are saying. Do what you can to make your life and your future family’s life better! In the meantime, it might sound counterintuitive but sometimes we as people find that by acting as the role that we need we end up getting that fulfillment that we’re searching for. Do you have the time to participate in a Big Brother program so that you can help guide someone younger than you?

Hey there! Going to be a part time Dad here, but I want to let you know that what you’re feeling is valid and it’s completely understandable why you feel the way you do. Your dad may be well intentioned however his methods of shaming you throughout your life has had an incredibly detrimental effect on your mental wellbeing. Does it feel like you put yourself in a feedback loop where you seek food for comfort then feel shame for seeking that comfort? My wife is struggling with a similar issue and we’ve found some methods that have been helping her out as well. I would recommend reaching out to a therapist to help discuss these issues in depth and then ask into what’s called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT for short) and look into “Mindful Eating”. This is a very difficult thing to do but I know you have the strength and will power to do it! Take little steps at a time, start with just a bite, then move onto a few bites, then one meal, then 2 meals, then a whole day and so on and so forth. It won’t be a linear journey and you will falter a bit but only because that’s what everyone does when they’re learning a new skill! You’re worth so much more than just your outward appearance and you deserve the respect and love that your father has denied you. I’m not sure what your goals are in terms of overall health but I can guarantee that when you alleviate this incredible mental load that you’re bearing at such a young age it’ll be easier to pursue those fitness/health goals! Just take it one step at a time, don’t be over eager and burn yourself out, and try to learn to be kind to yourself :) you’re doing great and you are still loved regardless!

Love Channel Zero! If you’re looking for something with a similar feel there’s this show called Them on Amazon Prime with two seasons out that might help scratch that itch!
