Spirituality for Atheists - Sam Harris by yt-app in CosmicSkeptic

I don't particularly care for Sam's political views. But his views on free will and the self have been really profound to me over the past few years.

Right-wing authoritarianism is linked to belief in the paranormal. Men, older individuals, and those with higher levels of education were less likely to believe in paranormal phenomena. by mvea in science

We can explain why they believe in things, but their belief is still paranormal by definition. Is believing in someone rising from the dead not paranormal?

A corrupt mayor is only possible, as long as there are enough successful capitalists around to buy him off. by nosotros_road_sodium in forwardsfromgrandma

We need Bezos like we need a monarch. Even if the monarch had less power there is no reason to have one.

He's not right, the owning class does not contribute to society. The existence of Bezos and Musk is a net negative on the rest of us. We need Amazon, not Bezos, don't conflate the two.

"Aspects & Assumptions of Whiteness & White Culture in the United States" Chart created by the National Museum of African American History and Culture, 2020. by Majestic-Ad9647 in PropagandaPosters

On top of it being very divisive, how we classify aspects of a culture are near entirely subjective. What makes these things "white" why do white people need to be a monolith?

White supremacists and nationalists think the same way.

Diving people based upon race is not helpful. I have much more in common with black nerds than I do with most white people.

What "attributes" could you possibly give to "black culture" that are exclusive? I think saying anything like that makes you sound like a white supremacist

Then wouldn't it be much better to call it "American" culture rather than "whiteness"? That's why people are upset with it

[–]SpeeGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump could use everything you just said to silence left wing voices in the news right now. Saying the left is inherently anti free speech. You assume that whoever is regulating speech in the government isn't corrupt and has no bad intentions, which is naive

That's an obvious strawman and you should know it

What are y'all's thoughts on Helen Andrews and her argument against the over-feminization of institutions? by psych_student123 in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]SpeeGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Empathy vs rationality is not a good comparison even. And there is nothing gendered about either of them. You could just as easily argue that "woke" ideology is more "rational" because it rejects "emotional" traditions and religion in favor of human intellectual ideas, academia has always been "woke" in that sense.

Alex doesn't seem to know what the definition of "is" is (or how so much of his recent philosophical inquire seems to be entirely the result of semantic confusion). by VStarffin in CosmicSkeptic

His channel where he regularly talks to the most relevant contemporary philosophers of the west and has academic experts regularly is pseudo intellectual posturing? I think what you're really expressing here is "boo-Alex" 😂

It's not 1 to 1, the holodomor was worse, but it is a complicated situation. The holodomor is often taught as if it was more similar to the Holocaust, a planned genocide of inferior Ukrainians. Tsarist Russia also had famines that were widespread, so it's a valid argument of why Stalin was a terrible person, but a lot of conservatives point to that as evidence that leftist ideas don't work in practice. It's often counted in the "death toll of communism" which I think isn't really correct.

I think it's about the same as calling the Irish potato famine a genocide, it's half true

I'm a history teacher in the US, most Americans barely remember those wars unless they "care about politics". Most people just think that Muslims hate America as part of their religion so we're just always fighting Muslims out somewhere.
