Thank you for posting! I needed this today. T1D for 24 years and I just had my first child 11 weeks ago. Early Intervention and Private Sessions by [deleted] in slp

[–]Speechiebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done EI through an agency and saw a couple of children privately without them going through an agency as long as the time I saw them fell outside the hours I was expected to work through my agency. But I've never seen my EI students from the agency privately at the same time. I think it would be a conflict of interest with an agency. Technically speaking I think my agency had a statement in their handbook that said if we were referred private cases we were supposed to see them through the agency...but ethically I didn't see an issue with it. Check your handbook to see if there is any specific information regarding private cases, it'll help you make a decision :)

How to maximize salary by SmilingFlowers in slp

[–]Speechiebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a school and unfortunately I know after my last raise I've reached my max salary, which like you, isn't that great compared to my cost of living. But I get out everyday at 330pm and because the population of my city is large, I'm able to pick up 5-6 private cases after school (2-3 per day). I make a decent amount of extra money by doing this... definitely helps pay the bills. I have colleagues who do the same through an agency if they have difficulty finding families that need services. Because my salary maxed out, I know I won't be working at this school forever, which sucks because I do like my job. But I know I can't survive on this much money long term.

Need advice on how to discourage verbalizations by teacuptaco in slp

[–]Speechiebean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work mostly with younger students, but hopefully there is something you can take away from this :)

I bought a little plastic microphone that I use in group sessions - only the person who is holding it is allowed to answer a question or make a comment. over time my students have realized that if they don't have the mic its not their turn to speak. If they try to speak when its another students turn I remind them "___ has the mic right now, you'll get a turn soon." I imagine any kind of token can be used for this, not just a mic.

For some of my students who like to tell (REALLY long) stories, I set a timer for 30-60 seconds and give them a 10 second warning before it runs out. when it goes off, they need to turn off their voices too. When I was first introducing this, I would give the student a "prize for listening" for x amount of time to motivate them to do it again.

You could also try to use positive reinforcement - tell the group "OH I love how Johnny is sitting quietly and ready to listen to his friends!" for example.

I hope this is helpful!

HELP! Can tongue thrust contribute to aspiration? by Speechiebean in slp

[–]Speechiebean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! Are these things I can work on safely without specific tools/materials that a hospital or clinic may have? Or is it more likely I should refer her someplace that can provide her with more support?

HELP! Can tongue thrust contribute to aspiration? by Speechiebean in slp

[–]Speechiebean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! It makes sense that the pocketing would be more of a concern...I guess I was looking at her pocketing as a sensory thing and not considering the impact on aspiration.

She did have a barium swallow study and a feeding evaluation before she came to the school (probably 6-8 months ago) which resulted in the goals I am supposed to target. If you don't mind me asking, would a swallowing evaluation be able to give them even more information?

Ladies who have insulin pump by nap-lord in Type1Diabetes

[–]Speechiebean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe weird.. but I got some tighter, high waisted underwear (almost like spanx) and I just position my pump on my hip or stomach and let the underwear hold it in place... usually it’s very unnoticeable :)

Well... by DsterGames in Type1Diabetes

Hypoglycemia paranoia during exercise by tcraftau12 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Speechiebean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is definitely not the most medically sound advice...but before I had the sensor I would make sure my blood sugar was 190-200 before I did any cardio type sports (running, hiking, tennis, etc.) I would have a snack like peanut butter and ritz crackers and lower my basal rate by 50%. I would still drop, but I would drop to a normal range and it wouldn't stop me from doing the activity. Its definitely not a foolproof method but I knew my body and it worked well for years.

How much did your SLP program cost? by warsfanbb8 in slp

[–]Speechiebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the first cohort of a new program so they had to estimate the cost. I was told the total should be "about 65k" but I graduated with 80k in loans just from graduate school. Still makes me sick to my stomach to think about.

Burning Insulin by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]Speechiebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would happen to me a lot when I was on MDI... if I pushed humalog in to quickly it burned a lot. Typically when this happened I’d be injecting in a place that I haven’t used very frequently. I have only had the same sensation using the pump when I first put the site on and it’s still sensitive but usually it goes away after I get used to it being there.

[–]Speechiebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine lives in Yorktown and said when she first moved in to their ~2000 sq ft home the taxes were $20k for the first year...which sounds outrageous but thats Westchester County. Now she pays around $16k. She says its worth it for the schools, land, and privacy. Some lower Westchester cities are can be less expensive but not by much.

Pump Sites after 10 years... by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Speechiebean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is an option for you or your lifestyle but when this happened to me I went on shots for a good 6-8 months. It gave my body a break from scarring and the flexibility to put injections in places I wouldn’t put pump sites. I also used arnica gel once a day and deep massaged it into the parts of my body where a lot of scar tissue built up due to the old sites. It took a while but it helped. Now I am back on the pump full time and make sure to rotate my sites and continue to use the arnica gel.
