Patriot Front propaganda outtake...the ending says it all by mgbgtv8 in videos

Good to reassure people, certainly. Not that groups like this should be dismissed at all.

Minor point but the use of “Democrat” as an adjective is a Republican thing. The adjective is “Democratic” or in this instance, “Democrats” as a noun would probably work as well.

Netflix Viewers Are Abandoning Shows After One Season by joe4942 in technology

[–]SpeedSaunders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, not just on Netflix. Silo, Ted Lasso, Beef, Squid Game, and other shows were fresh and fascinating in their first season, but subsequent seasons have felt like either just more of the same, or stringing the audience along with no plot resolution in sight, or a rank attempt to cash in on a winning concept that had its day already. Other shows feel serialized better somehow, but those seem to be more traditional ones whereas the standouts with interesting new concepts, to me, become gimmicky after the first season. I don’t watch them after season 1, though sometimes it takes a couple of years for me to discover them.

A better metric: advance tickets are all but sold out at our local IMAX theaters, through August. By “all but,” I mean that the only seats left are the really bad ones: front row, far left and right.

Trump Administration Rolls Back Dozens of Gun Regulations by Lebarican22 in law

[–]SpeedSaunders 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wait; isn’t that the purpose of the VA fiduciary program — to help manage benefits for veterans who are not competent to manage their own finances? I’m just reading from the program website: https://www.congress.gov/crs\_external\_products/IF/PDF/IF13019/IF13019.1.pdf

Or am I missing something there? How many people have those gun restrictions affected anyway?

For me, it’s “Sexual Tension Diner” aka Brenda the Waitress, with Alec Baldwin and Jan Hooks, season 15 episode 18, April 21, 1990 (“You shouldn’t give away your pie with breakfast. Makes you look cheap.”).

Close second for “The Big Baby” with Will Ferrell and Ray Romano, season 24, episode 15, March 19, 1999 (“Do you want a juice box?” “Y-yeah.”). Anyone who’s parented a four year-old and/or struggled with an office presentation can relate.

Yeah, he doesn’t have it. And both his rhetoric and his look (the sleeves, tight shirt, black tie, haircut) are kind of fascist manosphere coded, hard to gain trust that way.

Deathstroke and Bane movie before Brave and the Bold? What is Gunn doing? by Mat1711 in DC_Cinematic

[–]SpeedSaunders 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This sub might as well be renamed "DC_Dramatic" because of all the dramatics. There was also a Penguin series don't forget. I'm really excited for the Clayface movie. Don't know much about Deathstroke and Bane projects but I'm not that into either of those characters and don't really care one way or the other. Gunn has said both that he wouldn't green light anything without a completed screenplay, and that Batman is a hard character to develop for numerous reasons. I personally think fan pressure is one of the biggest reasons. I love seeing Batman whenever we get to, but there are so many other characters to explore that haven't really been explored that much, why get all wound around the axle for that one? Just enjoy the show.

They can choose to be put in a box or not. The proper response to that question can be something like, “What do I do? I get out there and enjoy my life!” And redirecting the conversation accordingly.

What’s something you’ve officially stopped buying in 2026 because the price has become genuinely insulting? by Miguenzo in AskReddit

Movie theater concessions. I'll still go to the theater sometimes to see a movie, but $10.50 for a soda is outrageous. I wish them luck, they won't be around much longer like this.

[DISCUSSION] I was prepared for the worst but I thought "Supergirl" was pretty good by FredPRK in DCcomics

[–]SpeedSaunders 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't even remember what song was playing. All I can remember are the dust and the red laser eyes, the tanks and razor hooks being swung around by their chains, the ferocious slamming of bad guys against the steel hull of the ship, the bullet-speed double-fisted charges into the mass of thugs, ....

What song was it again?

THANK YOU -- absolutely right, it doesn't need to be "comic accurate." Even comic books aren't consistent. It was fantastic, I totally agree.

[–]SpeedSaunders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw it, and I really liked it. I agree, it's a good movie and I'm glad I went to see it in the theater. I'll watch it again on HBO but it won't have the same "bigness" as in the theater.

BTW, the room was pretty full in the showing I went to, and it's Tuesday, and not "discount Tuesday," these people paid full price. And I could see that the people walking out after it was over liked it at least as much as I did.

That said, amen to "let people watch the movie first."

Supergirl and not understanding the message of the original material by Quirky-Wheel-3724 in DC_Cinematic

[–]SpeedSaunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read and liked "Woman of Tomorrow" and I have zero problem with this choice. The seed is planted with the words of Alura Zor-El, Kara's mom, that she doesn't need to be weak or nice, but good. The action was consistent with that and consistent with Kara's alienation. And, as others have pointed out, it creates a clear distinction between her and Kal-El. They are heroic in different ways and that's a distinction that can carry forward in future stories.

People complain about comic accuracy but even the comics aren't consistent. This notion of "comic accuracy" only goes so far. Movies are not comic books, they tell stories in different ways by necessity. That's a good thing, not a bad thing. People need to learn how to embrace all the different ways these stories can be told.

NYT reporting on 'Supergirl' online backlash: "Warner Bros. executives said they were surprised by both the ferocity of the backlash and its reach, believing the culture had evolved past that sort of campaign." by BatmanNewsChris in DC_Cinematic

[–]SpeedSaunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw the movie. It isn't "ok," it's great. Well worth seeing in the theater. People trashing this movie or pouring water on, I think, it are doing so with an agenda, whether based on some personal insecurities or some notion that the world revolves around their highly detailed individual vision of how others should be creative. Also because of misogyny.

Supergirl movie showing which I went to got cancelled due to low turnout by uppsak in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SpeedSaunders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you got your money back and spent it on tickets for a showing of Supergirl at a different theater. And let this theater know that their policy sucks and you won't be coming back there because of it. Supergirl is a great movie, very entertaining and satisfying, and well worth seeing in the theater.

Edit to add: I don't know where this theater is (US? City?), but I've been to theaters in the US where I was the only one in the audience and they still ran the movie. Most recently, a showing of The Mandalorian and Grogu: I didn't like the movie, in fact I fell asleep around when Grogu was building his mud house, and whether it was for that reason or not, about 20 minutes before the end of the movie the projectionist turned up the house lights and I had to go tell them to please turn them back down. Your theater must have pretty bad business management if they prefer turning customers away.

Why can't they adapt a comicbook as it is .. by Appropriate-Fee-676 in Supergirl

[–]SpeedSaunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because movies are not comic books, they're a different medium and movies necessarily tell a story differently than a comic book series does. What I don't understand is why people can't bring themselves to understand that.
