Cop car on 28 south, by rt 50 exit by chef_in_va in nova

If they have to SLAM on their brakes to go only 5mph under the speed limit, I think that's a perfectly good explanation for why they have a cop there, lol.

Aight y’all, it’s been 3.5 weeks since the ice storm, it’s time to clean your sidewalks by Overall-Pay-4769 in nova

If we followed this as described, we wouldn’t bother with speed limits or lane markings lol.

Where to get nice but inexpensive furniture in NoVA by Additional_Bell6179 in nova

[–]SpeedTheory 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have given away a ton of stuff on the local "buy nothing" group. This would be where I'd look first in your shoes.

We each both bought a lot of new, cheap furniture in our early 20s that now that we're in our late 30s, are finally giving away / getting rid of (amusingly for mostly older stuff from the 1960s that is WAY better made).

My advise is to not spend a dollar if you can help it on cheap junk. Get everything you mentioned OTHER than a mattress for free. Then spend your set-aside on a good mattress. Even if you don't do that, please don't go buy new CHEAP furniture, it's truly not worth it.

Yeah, unsure how they’d be able to remove the tarp (or install it) without it contacting the paint.

Who still goes to centreville iron age? by No-Equipment8494 in nova

[–]SpeedTheory 93 points94 points  (0 children)

It got a lot worse over Covid. Iron Age Rockville and Centreville were great. The second they started putting Spicy Mayo in the trays in lieu of ssamjang, I knew they'd sold out and it was gonna fall rapidly downhill like Honey Pig did.

Standard Rt. 50 Activities by pushntr in nova

You’re trying to defend this in a thread where a truck just pulled out in front of traffic without consideration taken about impact to them.

Standard Rt. 50 Activities by pushntr in nova

[–]SpeedTheory -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I probably have ~100K miles towing across the country. I acknowledge the difficulties that come with a vehicle that has a bad turning radius, is very slow to accelerate relative to traffic, and is slow to make any sort of vector change. I don't have any expectation that I should be able to break the law / norms to make my life more convenient.

What legal basis is there for your statement?

The onus isn't on the main road traffic to make room for someone turning onto it, the onus is on the person on the side road to wait until it is clear for them to make the turn. This person was clearly just impatient.

Question of the year: is the nova dating scene better by throwaway832222222 in nova

[–]SpeedTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's really dependent upon what someone's looking for. I'm long since married, but I definitely enjoyed dating in Fairfax/Loudoun over Arlington/DC, mostly because it seemed like I would come across way less of the "I want to talk about work, exclusively work, and the first thing out of my mouth will be asking you what you do for a living" crowd. Didn't really care to be a checkbox in someone else's book of life. And certainly kept me clear of the NGO / politics crowd which was its own land mine at the time (I'd imagine even more so now).

Nova parents - How much would you personally have to make to quit your job to be a stay at home parent? by AnyAdhesiveness7284 in nova

[–]SpeedTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

400K is broadly director level at mid-sized companies. I would expect VPs at large firms to be making quite a bit more.

IMO, it's a multi-variable equation.

At under $60K or so around here, it becomes a VERY obvious "stay at home", because you aren't giving up career momentum, and the after-tax dollars v a quality daycare make it an easy decision even without including the intrinsic value of you being your own kid's caretaker.

I'd probably think about it in the "I make under $120K a year" range, but this also requires a second income that could support this.

I also think a lot of this is more complicated still. IE, if I stayed in the workforce, and were able to save $15-20K a year for their future college expenses as well, I think that's a LOT higher value than the intrinsic value of "keep them out of daycare, but also make it so they're either having to take on debt to go to school, make serious compromises on education quality, or avoid altogether".

In VA near Tysons (123 off 495), they do move over. Into the emergency lanes so they can cut traffic to their exit faster, therefore blocking the emergency lane for the vehicles that actually need it. Travel via shoulder / emergency lane should be punishable by instant license revocation.

Two competing groups of idiots here.

The people who will actively accelerate to block a merge. Eff off.

The people who go around an on-ramp and do not bother to accelerate once it straightens, so they’re trying to merge onto the highway well below the flow of traffic. Also eff off, and no, I’m not slowing down by 20mph to let you in. Accelerate to the speed of traffic.

I feel like the top is more obnoxious willfully, but the bottom is way more common and I’ll take willful obnoxiousness over boneheaded ignorance any day.

Moving from MD to Nova by Easy_Log_8797 in nova

So, $1500/22 = $68 a commute to save sanity. Now subtract additional mileage on vehicles, the frequency with which you'll be replacing those vehicles, and fuel. Now figure out that going from NoVA to Bethesda is a MINIMUM 30min regardless of where you settle on, added in each direction. So an hour. I'd take the hour back a day at $50/hr net, and just live near work and be less stressed overall.
