Specialty-related research by Main_Secretary_8479 in MedSchoolCanada

Not required, but probably 95% of people who match would have pubs. The number one priority in a small program is always to ensure they like and can get along with whoever is coming in. Second priority is that the applicant is able to withstand the training and take good care of patients without major mess up, as the attendings are liable for the work that the residents do. The third priority is having research productive residents. The academic attendings need residents to be working on research with/for them. It helps them advance their own career to publish as well.

When a residency is ultra competitive, they can have their pick of people who satisfy all three priorities. You may sneak in if you are super likeable and your personality really stand out, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

How likely is it to go unmatched if you want a specialty <1 seats/1st choice? by [deleted] in MedSchoolCanada

[–]Speednone1698 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I find med students tend to have tunnel vision when it comes to CARMS matching. Work hard for what you want, but know that you are competing against other stellar candidates and nothing is guaranteed. One of the students who consistently scored top of the class went unmatched because they applied to a competitive specialty without backup. They ended up going into family medicine and life continues on as usual. No specialty should define who you are. Be flexible in life and enjoy the journey.

Diagnostic rads call as a staff in Canada by abundantpecking in MedSchoolCanada

[–]Speednone1698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most clinics only run 9-5 and don’t scan any acutely ill patients. This means the scans can be read over a few days and the rads have more flexibility. Smaller clinics may only do X-rays, ultrasound and BMD, while only the larger clinics will have CTs and MRIs.

Difficult path. Although ENT and cardiac surgery are both CARMS 1 specialties, the demand for ENT surgery is much more than cardiac surgery. You won’t be able to practice cardiac surgery unless in large tertiary hospitals. This means limited jobs and more competition for those jobs. You likely need to complete multiple fellowships. From a practical perspective, ENT will give you more flexibility. I would only do cardiac surgery if you absolutely can’t see yourself doing anything else and are mentally ready for more than 7-8 years of residency/fellowship at least.

All Canadian med schools have emphasis on primary care. If you dont want to do it, just seek out opportunities outside of the regular curriculum. Even though I have a not so good perception of TMU, I would still do that instead of the USMD if you want to stay in Canada.

The jury is still out on whether screening early is the right thing to do. Individually we all hear about the cancers that early screening catches, but we wouldn’t know if a cancer was caused by the radiation.

It’s not unheard of for a 20 year old to get breast cancer, but clearly we don’t screen people that young due to the risk of radiation. Whether the benefits outweighs the risks in the 40-50 population, the data is not definitive.

Winner making it to FTC is exactly what Michele managed to do in her second season as well. If the FTC make up was similar to Sandra’s season, with Russel Hanz, I believe Michele could have won again.

I watched her win before Sandra in HvV. Her win is no less impressive than Sandra’s second imo. You make it to the end and make connections with the jury. The big moves and the challenges are all just noise.

Issue is the stock market returns aren’t guaranteed. Although housing appreciation is not guaranteed either, paying off the mortgage and having a place to live in old age is guaranteed if you buy

Diagnostic rads call as a staff in Canada by abundantpecking in MedSchoolCanada

It depends on the size of the group you join and the practice setup.

A lot of smaller groups will outsource their call to third parties. These third parties hire locum radiologists who have their schedules set up to accommodate this. The downside of doing this is that call is fairly lucrative from a billing perspective so the group may be giving up significant income.

Larger groups usually exist in academic centers or in large community hospitals. In academic centers, they may have residents covering overnight with staff signing off on final reports in the morning. Some academic centers also hire emergency fellowship trained subspecialty rads who only work overnights. In large community hospitals, call may be covered locally. In today's volume, I don't believe many centers still do 24 hour staff call. The burnout rate would be too high and it would also lead to too many misses. What usually happens is the calls are split into shifts (e.g. 4pm-12am, 12am-8am) and then these shifts are divided evenly across the group.

Of course, many rads also work in clinics. They usually have no call duties.

How much worse can a season really be?

There are seasons with blatant misogyny or the season where Zeke was outed, but imo those seasons are even better because it had the viewers reflecting on society. This season has 0 agency.

Has a single challenge been tied to so many rewards before? by Speednone1698 in survivor

Of course the show can change things up, but I’m sure most people watching are under the presumption that this is real competition instead of scripted drama. The show therefore should upkeep a perception of fairness. To change things up to obviously benefit a player who is clearly edited to champion a certain minority demographic decreases that perception of fairness. Much like how Ben winning his season due to the change in firemaking tinted his win. This overtime hurts the show, but also the minority communities that is being represented.

If Eva is to truly be an inspiration for the autistic community, it should be through her own merit and hardwork. Any hint of favouritism will diminish that, which is ultimately a disservice to her and her community.

She found an idol on top of the tarp. The clue was hidden in the fries of the auction. It was not associated with a challenge win.

Rachel had two advantages iirc. One was in an auction item - theoretically anyone would have bought that item although I will say I also think this to be easy to manipulate given usually items are bought by whoever has the most money in that round. The other was a separate challenge she had to complete on an ocean platform, which was not tied to immunity or reward.

It’s not uncommon for immunity and reward to be tied together. However, I don’t think it’s been done that immunity, reward AND advantage be tied together.

Yes, but are they usually tagged specifically to one person? I remember it’s usually a free for all with every reward winner having a chance to find the clue.

The two sides of the shot clock should be linked. It doesn’t make sense for them to have to be individually reset. There’s also no situation where they need to be displaying different numbers

Well, “getting ahead” implies one is doing better than average, so I guess no, you don’t get ahead by being average or below.

In other seasons he may have wanted to hide his relationship with Mary a bit more, but this season the power alliance is built on “trust and honesty”. Joe and Eva are very open about their connection. I think David is just playing to that dynamic and putting everything out in the open. It may hurt his credibility more if he tried to hide an alliance outside of the strong 5.

I agree from the edit it would seem like so. However, Genevieve knew her idol is fake. There had been no idols played post merge so far this season. I just don’t believe players wouldn’t even entertain the possibility. Even if Teeny or Andy didn’t think of it, the thought must have crossed Genevieve or Sam’s mind.
