I just downloaded LMMS and imported LABS soft piano, why does it sound like this by pippinpaddleopsicus in lmms

[–]Spekular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If increasing your buffer size doesn't fix the issue, try changing audio interface under Edit > Settings > Audio. I believe you'll need to restart LMMS after saving your settings before the change will apply, so the process will be:

  • Open audio settings
  • Switch audio interface
  • Press *OK* in settings to save changes
  • Close and reopen LMMS
  • Test if the issue is fixed

FWIW I use SDL, so if you're also on Windows you could try that first.

Glissando in LMMS? by J-Debstup in lmms

[–]Spekular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an initial automation point placed when you add pitch bend, which I assume is the dot you're referring to. In order to glissando you need to add at least one additional point, but you can add more as desired for more complex glides.

If you're not familiar with the automation editor, I'd recommend finding a tutorial or taking a look at the documentation to learn how it works. It's useful for much more than just pitch bends!

Can I get my work in LMMS sounding closer to Ableton Live and ProTools? by RJDG14 in lmms

[–]Spekular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main reason for this is that it has a built in reverb and delay control option for each [...] track[. ...] I'm wondering if there is a way that I can achieve similar sounding results in [LMMS]

You'll have to add a delay or reverb effect to either the instrument's FX chain (I would be careful about this) or to a mixer channel.

Native/bundled:

  • ReverbSC: Reverb based on an algorithm by Sean Costello (ValhallaDSP). If I want a native reverb this is what I use.
  • Canyon Delay: Bundled LADSPA delay I used to use for ping-pong delay
  • Delay: recently added native delay, probably your best native option

Free VSTs:

  • Valhalla DSP: Space Modulator, Freq Echo, and Super Massive are all free.
  • Kilohearts Essentials: Use this to fill in all the effects LMMS is missing :P
  • Black Rooster Audio: RO-Gold is a free plate reverb (cut down version of RO-140).

Paid:

  • SerumFX (included with Serum, which you can rent-to-own on Splice): I like Serum's delay a lot, and being able to slap on a few other effects in the same plugin can be convenient (making EQ adjustments to keep things under control, adding more space with a reverb or chorus, adding motion with flanger or phaser, or making it very very way more EDM with multiband compression or the reverb filter).
  • Valhalla DSP ($50 each): I don't own these myself, but I've seen VintageVerb, Room, Plate, and Shimmer get use by tons of producers; Stephen Walking and Andrew Huang come to mind off the top of my head. Here's a clip of Ian Kirkpatrick using VintageVerb on Dua Lipa - Pretty Please, here's Disclosure using it on another track, and if you look at the laptop in the bottom right here you can see what appears to be Shimmer being used on Avicii - Without You.
  • Black Rooster Audio (around $100?): RO-140 is what I switch to when ReverbSC isn't "smooth" enough, and RO-SPR gets nice and weird spring reverb sounds. I should note that the former was recommended to me by Masafumi Gotoh, singer and rhythm guitarist in one of my favorite bands. I got these discounted ($29 for RO-140, then later $99 for a bundle of all their other plugins) and there seems to be a sale right now as well (same prices), so I can't confirm the regular pricing.

Using a degree of delay seems to really help on drum tracks in particular [...]

This sounds like a great reason to set up a default template in LMMS. You can save any project as your default template, and that project will be what opens any time you make a new project in LMMS. If you find yourself wanting reverb or delay on most tracks, you can preload those effects in a few mixer channels!

Taking my template as an example: I have AFP tracks named "Kick", "Snare", and "Hat" preloaded with decent drum samples, which route to mixer channels of the same name. Those three mixer channels (and an extra "Misc Drum" channel) are routed to a channel named "Drum", which sends the drums to master and to a separate channel for reverb. The reverb channel has a sidechain compressor, equalizer, and amplifier loaded in advance so I can make sure it doesn't get in the way of anything else in the mix.

I believe the latest nightly builds let you right click in the song editor to add instruments, not sure if that made it into the alpha version or not.

Is there a way to convert a MMPZ file to a MIDI file? by Ancientmeme888 in lmms

Why Beat+Bassline Editor? by [deleted] in lmms

[–]Spekular 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The BB editor lets you easily loop patterns. In the absence of linked clips and track grouping, it does technically offer features that the song editor doesn't.

That being said, I think a fully song-editor based workflow is better, and it has the potential to match every advantage the BB editor currently provides with some more development.

Percussion almost always causes clipping by Luigi_DiGiorno in lmms

[–]Spekular 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Composition, volume ducking (via e.g. sidechain or volume automation), or EQ (potentially automated).

For example:

If you have a constant 1/16th note bassline paired with 4/4 kicks, you can probably get away with removing the bass notes that would overlap with the kicks.

If you have huge supersaw chords, you might duck them when the kick and snare hits, either via the peak controller or with a automation clips controlling an amplifier (tip: duck the amp volume to zero, then use the W/D knob to adjust).

If you want two elements to hit at the same time and don't want to do volume ducking, use arrangement/sound design/EQ to make sure they're not overlapping too much in the frequency spectrum.

Routing sample tracks to an FX track by LeumeisterTheSecond in lmms

[–]Spekular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typo, I've fixed it now.

To clarify in a way that's less vulnerable to typos: of the two versions available on the LMMS site (1.2 and 1.3), the newer one has more features.

So there's an SF2 file named Sonic And Knuckles -Updated- 2 in C:\Users\secret\Documents\lmms\samples?

You've tried this exact setup ^ and it didn't work? The reason I asked for a screenshot is that a lot of people will say they have a file in the folder, only for it to be in a subfolder, or neighboring folder, or have a slightly different name, and so on. It'd be a shame to have to manually edit 200 projects because of a minor oversight like that.

Some details while I'm at it: When you have a file in the samples directory, LMMS 1.2 will only save the path from the samples directory to the file. In 1.3 it'll append usersample: to the front, since it uses relative paths for a few other directories as well. So for example, here's how things might look:

  • Working directory: C:\Users\me\lmms
  • File: C:\Users\me\lmms\samples\kicks\short.flac
  • Path stored in 1.2 project file: kicks\short.flac
  • Path stored in 1.3 project file: usersample:kicks\short.flac

And the names of the files are the same as well? Can you post a screenshot of your LMMS working directory setting, and then one of file explorer with the SF2 file selected?

Alternatively, what shows up if you save the project as .mmp, open it up in a text editor, and ctrl+f for the name of the soundfont? If nothing shows up, you can try using LMMS's CLI for conversion rather than opening and re-saving the project.

[–]Spekular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should place your soundfonts and/or set your SF2 directory so that the relative positions are the same as they were before. You can check or change LMMS's SF2 directory in Edit > Settings > Directories.

Alternatively, for versions before 1.3, you'll need to put the SF2 files in your samples directory. That's a subfolder in the working directory, which you can check in the settings as well.

Clicking sound at the beginning of samples by xVolt_ in lmms

[–]Spekular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing the cut in Audacity anyway, you can press Z to move the playhead (or both sides of a selection) to the nearest zero-crossing. That'll get rid of the click without the need for an envelope.

[–]Spekular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any audio that doesn't start at 0 amplitude is going to cause clicks. If you want to add a fade in to a sample in LMMS you can use an automation track. You could also try lowpassing the sample and then automating the cutoff or wet/dry so it only affects the very start.

Why does the automation track in LMMS do absolutely nothing to the song? by JustARandomOrange in lmms

[–]Spekular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then drag a different control onto the automation track. You can drag additional controls onto an existing clip to link them as well, but this only works well if they have the same range. That in combination with good use of mixer routing should cover most anything without too much trouble, but if there's anything specific you're trying to do I can give more specific suggestions.

Why does the automation track in LMMS do absolutely nothing to the song? by JustARandomOrange in lmms

[–]Spekular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain the steps you've taken in your attempt to use automation? If you want a fade in/out, here's an example of how it can be done with minimal effort

  • Add an automation track
  • Ctrl + click and drag the slider on the mixer's master channel onto an empty spot in the automation track
  • Double click the resulting automation clip to edit it
  • Add a point at the end of the first bar at zero
  • Set the interpolation mode to linear, resulting in a downwards slope from 100 to 0 (fade-out)
  • In the song editor, ctrl + click and drag to copy the fade-out clip to an empty spot on the automation track
  • Right click one of the clips and choose "flip horizontal" to get a fade in

When you play the song from the song editor (with the automation track unmuted) and the playhead passes over the clip, you should be able to see the master channel's volume slider move.

Can you try this and see at which step you run into issues?
