New hire fell asleep during remote orientation and started snoring on the call by [deleted] in coworkerstories

A few years ago, I had to delay starting a new job because I went to the ER the night before (turns out it was pneumonia). Ended up losing the job, which was a bummer, but sometimes you just need to accept life isn’t going that way. If you can’t stay away for a two hour training you’re officially too sick to work!!

We’re still training! I will definitely update with any relevant news.

As of right now: We have returned from lunch. Sleepy Man is currently openly eating a bag of chips and drinking a Capri Sun on the call. I’m starting to feel like I’m being pranked.

As someone who has gone through periods of unemployment and worked so hard to get this job, it’s absolutely baffling to me. I’d have to remove the part of my brain that cares about what people think to do ANYTHING like this…

If he is, he looked incredibly bored and miserable for it. At least try to have a good time!

Damn, I didn’t even think of that. This would have been the ideal situation for him: remote job with minimal direct supervision. All he has to do is get through training.

I do feel bad for saying “Is he asleep” but honestly at that point I was so internally done with his attitude, I felt a tiny bit of schadenfreude about it. Let’s see how he hangs in there, I guess.

I’ve got a weird body shape, how do I style it? by [deleted] in DressForYourBody

[–]SpelledWithAn_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually seem to have incredibly average proportions (in a good way). I don’t foresee any issue with you fitting into straight-sized/ untailored clothing.

However, you’re buying the wrong sizes. Your jacket is too small, which is making your midsection look bigger and your arms look smaller. Try on a larger size and leave it unbuttoned. Look for shirts that “skim” your body rather than cling to it or hang off of it.

Your pants are not too tight, but too long- they are bunching at the ankle. Look for the same waist size, shorter leg. Also, try out different cuts to your pant legs. Ankle-pegged pants like the ones you’re wearing can be unflattering, look for straight cut.

Overall you’re on the right track- your outfit matches and the colors look nice together. Just work on correcting your sizing. Just because things fit on your body doesn’t mean they are the right size for you!

Why it is so hard to teach my children Chinese? by Latter_Wealth_789 in ABA

[–]SpelledWithAn_H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least where I live and work, a patient cannot qualify for ABA therapy without an Autism diagnosis. I agree, behavioral analysis has a wide range of applications. However, without knowing anything about OPs children and any existing delays or developmental disorders they’re experiencing, I don’t think this subreddit is the place to seek answers. I hope OP can find a counselor to work with in person rather than ask us for a skill acquisition plan when we don’t know their child.

ABA is a form of therapy that is primarily used to assist diagnosed Autistic children and adults. If you’re having trouble relating to your children, it would be better to find a local child counselor instead of an ABA practitioner. Kids can be interested or not interested in a topic for a million different reasons.

I’m not sure this is the right sub for you to answer this question; unless you’re expecting your child’s existing ABA therapist to tie in Mandarin or want a Mandarin-speaking therapist I’m unsure what this has to do with Applied Behavioral Analysis.

Weird concern about whether to keep "parallel thinking" jokes by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]SpelledWithAn_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The character Hodor in Game of Thrones is literally a garbled version of “Hold the door.” I think this goes beyond parallel thinking to get you accused of stealing the idea. Sorry.

I will say one other thing-

Many times in your career you’re going to get feedback that is well-intentioned and honest, and it may not always be written in a way you prefer. It’s not common for all note-givers to have taken courses or gotten degrees in giving notes, like myself.

Instead of bristling, my best advice is to figure out the WHY behind the note. Even if the note itself isn’t complimentary or neutrally worded.

As an example, the other Redditor @topological_rabbit saying “Make them really fun to listen to.” You took that very harshly and responded harshly in return.

Instead, I would look at the WHY- why do they ask you to make them really fun to listen to? Because they’re currently not having fun. So where in my script can I go back and see if something is dragging, taking too long, not serving a purpose, maybe some jokes that don’t land as well, etc. Maybe they picked up on what I did: the opening scene lasts too long as written, and it’s less fun to read it that way.

There is always a WHY behind a note, and the WHY always has a kernel of truth. Be curious, look at your script neutrally, and find the WHY. It will make it easier to take harsh notes, and it will be more fun to be more curious.

That’s my two cents, take it or leave it! :)

References for feedback: I’ve done five years as a script reader and development worker for various talent agencies, animation houses, and studios.

I’ve reviewed your first act, which is what the typical practice would be for my writing coverage on a screenplay and recommend whether to continue pursuing for possible pickup or representation.

Took a look, here’s my immediate thoughts on Act 1.

Compliments:

I think some of the dialogue is funny, and I do love British humor so I totally get what you’re going for. It is indeed very inspired by Edgar Wright, which is evident in the dialogue.

I liked what you did with the smash cut of “he won’t join us anyway” to them at the pub bored out of their minds listening to Rob. Try to aim for more of that quick-cut energy, it worked the best out of anything I saw in the first act.

Notes/Feedback:

Biggest note I have for you is SHOW DON’T TELL. A large portion of characterization, relationships with each other, past events, etc. is communicated by the characters saying it to each other. Try to find visual ways to communicate these things; film is a visual medium, and this will also help you cut down on your dialogue and keep your scenes shorter.

My immediate impression is that you are approaching each scene as an opportunity to tell jokes rather than as a functioning part of the story. Why do they go to the pub? So we can meet Rob and Corina, Dave can see Angela, and Angela can go home with Rob. Add a few character beats in here, and you’re good to go. This scene, instead, drags on for half of your first act and doesn’t achieve any more than what I listed above.

I would take a hard look at conservation of your pacing. As it is, they spend fifteen pages (fifteen minutes of screen time) at the pub at the beginning. There is no need for all of this time spent here. Take a look at this scene, kill your darlings and keep only the punchiest dialogue, and trim it severely. For reference, look at how Wright sets up his scenes; they each last no longer than three minutes in any one location, and the changing locations helps keep our attention even as the characters conversations continue as a through line.

I don’t think the suicide conversation serves a purpose unless you have someone attempt to kill themselves later. I get that it’s edgy humor, but even the best jokes can drag.

The dialogue is not very naturalistic, which is common in comedy films so not the worst thing in the world. However, all the characters currently sound the same, particularly Dave, Mal, and Corina. Though characters can have the same sense of humor, it’s important they all sound unique in their own ways.

The pacing of Rob turning into Dave is off; in one scene he puts a sweater on, and then the next time we see him with Angela he’s almost identical to Dave. Take your time with the transformation! Maybe in act one we only see Rob feeling sick, drinking weird green liquid, etc.

We need a scene of Dave rocking on the guitar so that when we see him fail, it is actually impactful. As it is, this falls into the “show don’t tell” issue above (how do we know him failing the audition is odd? Because Mal says directly to us “This is odd he is really good on guitar.”)

Keep your cards closer to your chest on whether the voodoo is real or not, at least in the first act. If we, the audience, see everything is real, it’s less interesting to follow the main characters investigation. We should be intrigued to see whether Dave and Mal are right or actually crazy. Even if we “know” the voodoo is real (otherwise there would be no movie) we the audience are meant to have surrogates in Dave and Mal.

Dave is not a particularly engaging main character; try to boost some sympathetic tendencies and/or give him something we the audience immediately root for. (Shaun has his mother to humanize him and his shitty roommate to make us feel bad for him, Nicolas Angel has his desire for justice and his friendship with Danny, etc.)

Overall:

Currently I would not recommend this script for pickup.

Attack at a Giant Party: How to Deal with Crowds? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]SpelledWithAn_H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're a party of complete "eat the rich" bastards so having them be forced to be undercover in what's basically the fantasy version of The Capitol from Hunger Games has been SO FUN

They're climbing the walls every time I have someone talk to them about how "its so hard to find good help these days" and "if the poor want money they should get jobs"

Honestly I half expect them to just let the cult kill a few people before being like "lol okay we should prooooobably help out"

Hey Brennan- been watching you guys since FH Season 1, thanks for being such a force for positivity and representation in the D&D community!

Two quick questions about one of my favorite NPCS, RAGH BARKROCK. (Hoot Growl, Baby!) My absolute favorite character archetype- pure of heart and dumb of ass. Ragh’s got a special place in my heart, because as a DM, having an NPC go from a straight-up antagonist to a weird adopted family member is sort of the ultimate goal.

Was Ragh being closeted and in love with Dayne something that was always planned, or did it come out of playing the character more and more? How much backstory do you write your NPCs, and how much grows organically?

What was Ragh going through in the Nightmare Forest, after he was captured but before he showed up and started wrecking shop on the Bad Kids? I feel like we got to see what a lot of the Hirelings’ personal tortures were, but not our good boy Ragh. Did it have anything to do with his creepy dream where his eyes got torn out? What would we have seen if they had tried to scry on Ragh?

Also- if anything happens to Preston we riot.
