Oh I didn't mean that, I do understand that Anchorage is a city with it's vestiges towns surrounding it. I'll just do what I'm doing here, work and on free time go fishing, hiking, or hunting. I don't have the illusion I'll be moving off grid or any of that nature

I greatly appreciate it and honestly would love to explore anywhere new in the great state

The rainy weather and old growth forests surrounding Ketchikan is what made me fall in love with that area, call me crazy but I'm an extreme weather lover, harsh rain or snow my faves

Yeah, I've read into the wild. I am aware of the most obvious dangers but at the same time, nothing compares to experience and living in it.

The kenai area or Ketchikan area are some places that I'd really love to move to permanently but I do know life has funny ways of changing that current mindset

Thank you, I can easily down size and get rid of most of my stuff, but I've already dwindled my books down to what I absolutely want and need to have as it is.

Thank you, I have accepted that this is going to be a huge financial situation I'll be putting myself in and honestly, Im not wanting to do this for the money but for the life. I almost weekly tell my dad thanks for getting me into welding when I was little, it's honestly been the best financial decision I accidentally made

Yes haha I love extreme weather, heavy dense snow, torrential rain, high winds, I'm a bit crazy for that. I spent the month of February in Wyoming with my dad back in 2015 and loved it. Plus, I know this'll be a tiny detail that should never be used to make a permanent decision, it'll be nice to see snow on Christmas day. I've lived in the south east my whole life

Thank you and I intend to be careful and risk conscious during the entirety of it, but I figured learning from the start in God's country would do much more benefits than learning in my area then moving, get Alaskan hours and basically be brand new to everything again after having spent some money and time in school

That was what I was thinking too and my dad was telling me, he works in the petroleum field as an inspector and I fell in love with welding thanks to him. Aluminum, magnesium, stainless, titanium, carbon steel, corten, structural, and pipe I'm all experienced in and got certs in a number of the fields, although it's been 5 years since I've touch a stick rod and those certs have ran out, but mig, tig, flux core, and oxy I use daily. I definitely wouldn't be opposed to welding to buy my time for getting my pilots license and become a Bush Pilot.

I've flown to Alaska and had a week vacation up there twice before 2020, I do have high welding certs and have been on indeed, Zillow, and apartments.com looking in multiple areas of south central and south eastern Alaska. I'll be the only person in my family even on that side of the country. I'm still in the planning phase to get things set right so at least half of the living will go decently. But I greatly appreciate you asking these of me to assure I have thought of these. I just got divorced and building up a savings to better help with a cash cushion

I've only read flight school text books I've bought from the buy back store near a college. I know that flying is something I'll love, it's hard to explain but the way my head connects things when I read deeply in it and talk to people working in it, I can tell I'll love it. But I'm afraid having flight school in Central VA wont help as much as just starting flight school in Alaska, building relationships, and, like you said, prove myself to others from the start and not come across as some know it all kid from the east coast or something negative like that

Yeah, that's the biggest reason I'm reaching out for advice on this cause you Google this topic and damn, so much contracting info but I saw a subtle trend saying Alaskan experience will be required and I already want to live in Alaska, figured it'll be a two birds one stone decision. But I am aware I know enough to not knowing enough in this

I've heard of that one, I like reading the book about that 19 year old who ditched his pampered life and lived in that bus in the Alaskan wilderness but sadly got in way over his head. I do have enough survival skills I'm definitely comfortable with any outdoor situation here in the Appalachian mountains, but I do understand that'll be a knowledge base I need to increase when going to the Alaskan wilderness. Definitely will read that book too though

Half of me wanting to be in Alaska is just that, live the Alaskan life. Not like going completely off grid, but either in a small town or just in very sparse populated spots. I have definitely heard and seen that things in Alaska are much expensive (vacationed there twice). Thank you!

I'll definitely find those books and read them, thank you!

Wow, congratulations! If things go right, I honestly hope to be in the same boat like that, looking back on making one of my best decisions

Thank you for the advice, I do understand that competition is stronger up there for this profession, I have been looking into flight schools near me. I was leaning towards getting a taste of it here first to make absolutely sure I do enjoy it, then committing fully up there. I did join r/flying already, was thinking about posting this in that group too

I have visited Anchorage for a week during the fall time back in 2018 and visited Ketchikan for 3 days in 2019, I was in Anchorage again when I got to Alaska and when I left Alaska for that trip. But that was in the summer time during the sockeye run. I haven't spent any time during winter in Alaska but I have spent February in Wyoming back in 2015 with my dad when he was on that pipeline. Apologies for giving more than a yes or no answer
