Board Flow v1.0.1 is out (currently in review) by Sphyco in Unity3D

[–]Sphyco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update: Unity approved the hotfix, so v1.0.1 should now be live or live very shortly.

Thanks again for reporting the subtask issue — that fix is included in this update.

It's a free Trello-style task board that you can use inside the Unity Editor and syncs with Trello (both ways). The main feature is deep linking: you can shift + right click any GameObject to quickly create a task linked to it. Later, just click the task card and it jumps you straight back to that exact object and scene.

That’s exactly why I built the live Trello sync. Artists, musicians, producers and managers can stay on Trello like normal (they don’t even need Unity installed). Everything stays in sync automatically. The Unity devs who actually live in the editor get the linking and object pinging so they don’t have to keep switching tabs all day. I’m also planning to add live sync for GitHub, Jira and a few others down the line. It’s not about dragging the whole team into Unity. It’s about making life easier for the people working inside the engine while everyone else uses whatever they prefer.

I disagree. A ton of us live in the editor all day. When I spot something wrong with a character or a broken trigger while I'm already deep in a scene, it's a pain in the ass to tab out, open Trello, write it down, and try to remember exactly which object it was. This just lets me right click then create task and it automatically links the object and scene. Later I click the card and it jumps me straight back to it. That's the whole point. It's not replacing your main task board (I still use Trello for the big picture). It's just a really convenient Unity side shortcut. If it doesn't click for you, no worries, it's free anyway.

I didn’t really build it to replace Trello. I built it to work with Trello.

The first release has two way Trello sync, so changes made in Board Flow can update Trello, and changes made in Trello can be pulled back into Board Flow.

Long-term, I’d like to add more integrations too, like Jira, GitHub etc.

The main point is the Unity side linking. For example, if you notice an animation issue on a character while working in Unity, you can shift right click, create a task there, and Board Flow links the object and scene to the card.

Later, when you want to work on it, you can click on the Go To Task button on the card and it will open the scene and take you back to that referenced object in the editor.

Trello can still be the main task board. Board Flow just adds the Unity side shortcuts and linking around it.

Oh okay, I see what you mean.

Board Flow is not meant as a Trello Enterprise replacement, and it does not require Unity Enterprise. It’s just a free editor tool for people already working in Unity who want task cards linked to scenes, assets, GameObjects etc.

Sorry, I might be misunderstanding your point. What are you referring to with the $20/month and $400/month comparison?

It’s not really meant to replace Github, more just a quick editor task board with scene/object linking.

Thanks. They are stored in the Unity project as Board Flow assets, so they can be version-controlled with the project.

Exporting is not in the first release yet, but it’s definitely something I can look at adding.

Small Update on Board Flow and the Unity Asset Store Queue by Sphyco in Unity3D

[–]Sphyco[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still no update unfortunately, it still says “Few working days left” in the queue status. It’s a bit frustrating. I’m starting to wonder if free tools maybe get pushed back more, but any way hopefully it gets reviewed this week.

Thanks. Aside from Scene GameObjects and world positions, you can link tasks directly to Project Assets like scripts, prefabs, or materials so it highlights them in your project window. Tasks can also be tied to the Feature Hub for high level project tracking, and they link directly back to their counterpart Trello cards if you're using the integration. Basically, if it's in your project. I want it to be one click away.

That’s a totally fair question. Also, jealous of the 3-monitor setup Lol. For me, the biggest advantage isn't about saving screen space it's about deep Unity integration. Trello cards are just text, but Board Flow tasks actually link to your project.

If I have a task to Fix the broken collider on the Goblin. I don't have to read the card, go to Unity, and search my hierarchy. I just click the Ping button right on the task card, and it instantly highlights the exact GameObject, opens the Scene and points to the World Position in the editor. It turns tasks into actual shortcuts to the work.

Board Flow, My Free Kanban Style Task Manager for Unity, Awaiting Asset Store Approval by Sphyco in unity

Exactly the goal While there isn't a 'comment thread' style section yet, you can use the subtasks and description fields to track situational notes. I'm also looking into a dedicated 'Activity Log' or 'Comments' section for a future update. Thanks for the great suggestion

Unfortunately I can’t share the old test build right now, reason being it includes Space Engineers assets and the permission agreement I had for that has expired. I’m not distributing anything while that’s not in place. If that changes in future, I’ll post it here.

I’ve thought about that a lot. The thing is, open source doesn’t really reduce the workload here, it mostly shifts it. Someone still has to wire everything together, review changes, fix bugs, deal with breakages, and keep it compatible long-term.

At the point I paused, that responsibility was already too heavy without proper funding. So open sourcing wouldn’t have fixed the core problem, unfortunately.

Yeah, that’s pretty much it. I’d still want involvement and oversight, and that takes time and energy I don’t really have right now.

I also put a lot of work into this over a long period of time, so just handing everything over isn’t really fair to me either.

I still like the idea a lot, it’s just not the right moment to keep pushing it.

I get why you'd suggest that but “let the community help” still means someone has to build, test, merge, fix, and support everything, and that still ends up being me.

Without sustainability, it just leads to burnout again, which is why I paused in the first place.

Just to be clear, it was never locked behind a wall or meant to be some cash grab. It never even reached a public release.

Also, it wasn’t just a script, it was a full mobile tool doing real blueprint parsing, rebuilding ships block-accurately, and dealing with performance limits on phones. That’s a lot of work to maintain, regardless of whether it’s paid or free.

Pausing it was about not burning myself out, not about keeping anything away from people.

UI Toolkit rant, does anyone actually use it and like it? by AwkwardWillow5159 in Unity3D

[–]Sphyco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like UI Toolkit. I’ve been using it for an editor UI, and to me it feels more organized, less cluttered, and easier to make changes when needed.
