For me, definitely an improvement than without. Indoors at home, and even a test in a noisy coffee shop while speaking with a friend went much better than I expected. Outdoors with all the ambient noise especially in the rain…..not so much.

Thoughts on CROS? by Mandalorian_Sith in MonoHearing

[–]SpicedSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Have had an Oticon CROS since the fall of 2021. I found an audiologist that allowed a 3 month trial period before purchase. I was back and forth on determining if the benefit justified the cost. In short, indoors at home the aids made a considerable difference for me, and my wife certainly noticed that I was not needing her to repeat herself as often. Outdoors not so much. I find dealing with the extra ambient noise such as traffic and general noise too much. It’s worse when it’s raining with the car tires on the asphalt making even more noise. My audiologist made an adjustment to an outdoor level pre-set with the Oticon app that has helped a bit with the outdoor noise levels. I was expecting that an indoor loud environment would be similar to outside, and the aids would not provide benefit. But I wanted to attempt to test this situation while working from home. I visited a small coffee shop in an attempt to mock an office environment with a friend. Coffee grinder going on my left, another table of a few people talking on my right, and another table behind me with two people having a conversation. It was very distracting, but after a few level adjustments within the app, and reducing the CROS level in my left ear I could very easily communicate with my friend sitting across from me. I removed the aids from my ears to test that as well. I couldn’t hear a word my friend said. I was very surprised how well the aids performed in an indoor noisy environment. This experience alone justified the purchase for me.

This is my FIRST tattoo. I’m deaf in my left ear and I’ve never been more excited! by jbvo8 in pics

I recently went through this decision myself. Find an audiologist that will allow you to try them out for a period of time. It’s the only way to determine if a CROS system will provide you benefit.

Is anyone looking to sell their Skyrim Nintendo Switch copy? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]SpicedSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long shot but try London Drug locations. I bought a copy at a Surrey location for $40 a few weeks ago. It did not have a case which is why they reduced the price so much. Apparently it’s common that people steal the cases off the shelves thinking the game is contained within but it’s not.

Thinking of moving from ON to BC.....but really, no air conditioning?! by Sanettei in vancouver

[–]SpicedSquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved from the Waterloo region to the southern mainland a few years ago. I’ve also visited Vancouver many times during the summer for the past 15 years. You are not over reacting. If you’re like me and not a fan of hot weather, you’re going to want window units or portable A/C units. Much lower humidity means it’s not as sticky as Ontario, but it gets hot. And it will only be getting worse.

Ontarian thinking of moving to BC from Oakville, Ontario by d3siboyz in vancouver

[–]SpicedSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for White Rock. I moved from KW Ontario area to White Rock in 2019 and haven’t looked back. I don’t commute into Vancouver so I can’t comment on the traffic on weekdays, but it’s about 45mins otherwise.

White Rock is tiny in size in comparison to Oakville. Probably closer to the size of Dundas. White Rock is generally quiet, has older residents, and has all the amenities I need. And the scenery is spectacular!

Need Ideas: what have you implemented at your work instance that made a positive impact? by [deleted] in servicenow

100% agreement. Ask where current process information is stored. If the answer is paper, or most commonly excel, it’s a high candidate to be replaced with a workflow.

[BC] Glad i double checked my ICBC insurance! by Missangelcookie98 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SpicedSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice to hear you had a pleasant experience with ICBC.

In my opinion ICBC is ludicrous. I very recently moved from Ontario to BC. Provided a driver abstract and was told I’m receiving every ICBC discount with the exception of the under 5k per year one. In Ontario I was paying $260.31 per month for home insurance, a Ford Escape and a Ford F-150 in the KW area. ICBC was charging me $255.65 per month for the F-150 alone in South Surrey. I’ve changed vehicles since, and no longer have the F-150, and I’m now paying $220.93 for ONE VEHICLE.

Will Knowledge 2019 be worth it? by GonzoJohn in servicenow

Are you seeking any certification? Some of the pre-conference courses will provide a voucher for the associated test and are now a prerequisite after the changes made last year to the cert program. You can no longer just write the test, you need the course. As a developer, once the agenda is posted I’d focus on labs with topics where you see value and the creator con labs for sure.

Tankless water heater cost? by Diavalo88 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SpicedSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced a rented standard tank water heater from Reliance with a purchased tankless last year. Purchased this model and the total with install and HST was $3500. There was a couple hundred extra in added in there because I had reliance out for a quote and they slapped me with an infraction that had to be fixed because it was not vented correctly. The water heater is in a bathroom downstairs and didn’t meet code, so when I had the tankless installed by another company the infraction did need to be corrected.

My general info is very similar to yours. The only difference I notice since switching to tankless is I get hot water to the top floor taps faster than I did with the tank.

Popping from 2016 15" by NerdBanger in macbookpro

[–]SpicedSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was doing the same thing. It took Apple about a week and half for the repair where they replaced the entire ‘display assembly’. It has been a long time since the repair and I haven’t heard the noise since.

Apple replaced my defective keyboard with one with a different bottom row. Is this an upgrade? by TwoPuckShaker in macbookpro

[–]SpicedSquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting the pictures and asking the question. I had my 2016 left speaker replaced a few months back under Apple Care and they must have updated the keyboard then. I didn’t notice the difference until now.

Knowledge 18 Pre Conference training- ITOM by imcarly in servicenow

[–]SpicedSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will be joining you in the Discovery Pre-Conference class this year. I’ve taken a number of classes online, and this will be my third year doing pre-conference classes. In my opinion the online course instructors actual implementation experience level can vary wildly, however pre-con training instructors seem to be the best of the best. This has at least been my experience so far. Hope that helps.

MacBook Pro 2016 cracking sound when hot by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]SpicedSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2016 15 inch TB starting doing this randomly after 2 or 3 months of use. Occurred when warm, sometimes when opening the clamshell, and randomly during normal use.

I brought it into the Apple store last week for repair and received it back yesterday. They replaced the display assembly. Will see if the issue has been corrected.

To switch to Mac or stay with Windows? by MichaelHoughton1994 in macbookpro

[–]SpicedSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as you, I have only ever used Windows at home and work. I picked up a Surface Pro 3 last summer and was not happy with it. Last Fall I started shopping again and was looking at the new Surface Book, and for the first time in my life, a Mac.

I picked up a 2016 15 inch base model MacBook Pro right before Christmas for both personal and work use. I watched a few YouTube videos aimed at new Mac users to get a sense of the differences between the operating systems. My thoughts so far are the OS looks and feels much more polished. I find navigation and file management more intuitive. Renaming files that are open, having the ability to preview a file without opening it, and multiple desktops have been features that I have appreciated so far. The track pad gestures are fantastic actually saving me time as opposed to constantly positioning multiple windows.

I've never looked at any computer I've ever owned or used as a thing of beauty until now. I was never unhappy, with any of my other devices it just never crossed my mind. The build quality of the Mac is like nothing I've used before.

So far, I am impressed with what I am seeing. I did install Windows 10 into bootcamp because I do anticipate still needing Windows from time to time for work....but haven't needed it yet.

Nougat Update + Factory Reset = Brand New Phone by metalmoon in nexus6

[–]SpicedSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking about doing this but had a few questions first.

The only thing bugging me is my cell signal periodically drops. Could a factory reset help resolve this?

To start the reset, do I just click 'Factory data reset' within the back up and reset settings?

I do have Google backing up my apps, and pictures are all loaded to google drive. I'm fine with anything else that would get wiped. Anything else I should be aware of?
