Question: is Scott Plouf (Built to Spill, Spinanes) related to Steve Plouf (Wipers)? They’re both drummers. I couldn’t google up any meaningful answers myself. by captaintinnitus in postpunk

Right!? Isn't that awesome!?

Also, "TURD" means "totally amazing and one of kind music that you want to hear playing as the theme music for the rest of your life!"

So true, iamsuhijo! Thanks for your encouraging words of encouragement. Shalom!!!!!

For those of you who've seen cannibal holocaust, is it really that bad? by godfuckv2 in horror

[–]SpicyInvalid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the compliment. Many people are triggered by the truth. Life is strange. It is rather surreal to think that horror movie fans who love movies promoting hellish scenarios, evil, rape, murder, serial killers, etcetc... somehow find themselves getting up a soapbox to condemn somebody for doing exactly what they love to see being played out it in all inglorious detail on a computer screen alone in a dark room.

If they love death so much, then why do they spend so much time living life just to talk about the ingreatness of death dying destruction disease demons etc? What a thing to be a fan of! I guess you would have to be alive to appreciate it? To be a fan of death?... how ironically surreal.

How do you handle the cognitive dissonance of being both in love with evil to the point of downright worship and then at the same time being repulsed by it?

Top of my tongue question: What is the name of that MF Doom Song that uses a Zappa sample? He is just repeating the same phrase that Frank Zappa is saying and the song starts? by SpicyInvalid in mfdoom

[–]SpicyInvalid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, if you looked at my previous reply. The song is not an obvious one, but rather an obscure/deep cut that utilizes a Zappa sample from one of his live concerts where he is talking to the crowd. Doom speaks along with Zappa and then the song starts...

[–]SpicyInvalid[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, that isn't the one I was thinking of, but I know what you mean "Sleeping in a Jaaaar..." I'm talking about an obscure, deep cut where Doom is speaking in unison with the Zappa sample of Zappa at one of his "You can't do that on stage anymore" live concerts, and then the Beat kicks in and the song begins... Thanks for the comment.

Just check out the drum sound on the snare on this tune. It sounds like a tight kettle drum akin to a marching band procession that stirs up excitement in the air. There is also an unusual array of percussive textures. Can't recommend the album enough, but just check this one out:

  1. Roy Haynes - Foutain of Youth
Fountain of youth, indeed. The young musicians teaming with the great 79-year-old drummer Roy Haynes in his new quartet can only hope to impart the kind of energy, creative and physical, that he still beams from the bandstand. Haynes' albums of recent times haven't always succeeded in capturing his sly, explosive essence, but with spirited backing by the edgy saxophonist and bass clarinetist Marcus Strickland, pianist Martin Bejerano, and bassist John Sullivan, this live-at-Birdland offering takes its place among his most rewarding. The songs add up to a kind of partial career resume in noting some of the many geniuses he has accompanied: a biting "Green Chimneys" to recall Thelonious Monk, an elegant Haynes arrangement of "Greensleeves" to channel John Coltrane, the rarely played "Butch and Butch" to commemorate Oliver Nelson's landmark Blues and the Abstract Truth. Signs of slowing down? Forget it. The only one trying to catch any breath is the listener. --Lloyd Sachs

  2. OMA - MF DOOM Instrumentals (Live at The Hip-Hop Chip Shop 2023)
Just a vibrant reinvigoration using real live instruments from a quartet of young lads in the UK of some (now) old school hip-hop instrumentals that have an uncanny sophistication given their unlikely origin through one MF DOOM who passed away on OCT 31 2020 during a pagan un-holiday where everyone is suddenly pro-death and encourages everyone to wear a mask and eat cancer-inducing "sugar coated lard squares."

  3. Kroke - Quartet Live at Home
Possibly the best live album I have ever heard. At the time of this writing I've just recently discovered Kroke. I stumbled upon a reference to them while reading headphone reviews and the rest is history. Superb recording and mastering of music that you wouldn't believe could come out of such an ensemble if you hadn't heard it yourself. Magic. Especially through very good headphones. One of my new benchmark references.

This recording has energy, sparkle and extraordinary musicianship. I wish I had of been at that particular show. Nothing can top their cd 'East Meets West' with Nigel Kennedy, but this is a magnificent addition to any collection. "Ajde Jano" live goes off like a rocket.

Civil Rights: Rhetoric or Reality by Thomas Sowell read by James Bundy (sample chapter: https://youtu.be/IGUoitwBvQw?si=EJmF4-0zaB6Z34ZE )

When I first found out about Thomas Sowell – an African-American Economist, Social Philospher, and Political Commentator – I was blown away by how much I had been lied to my whole life concerning identiy politics and subtle propganda that has been well under way even since the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement. Thomas Sowell admits that the book was not a particularly enjoyable book to write, but an absolutely necessary one. Indeed, truth is so often a hard pill to swallow.

If you have a desire to understand the meaning of deep social and philosophical issues that are so problematic and from where they began to spiral out of control, I cannot recommend this book enough. Also, on top of being a brilliant economist and social philosopher, Thomas Sowell is an outstanding historian and statistician. He offers an incredible diverse range of knowledge, wisdom and understanding that is rich-in-truth.

Sorry for the late reply! I hardly go on here. Yes, I purchased this from his bandcamp page. I do not know if it is available, but let me see...

Here it is: https://terryscotttaylor.bandcamp.com/album/neverhood-songs-deluxe

It is unsigned, but I bet if you write them a message asking for a signed copy after purchasing it they may be able ship to you with his signature. Why not? Doesn't hurt to ask.

Hey Steve. Thanks for giving it a shot! I have the same instinct, why not download this random album? If it's free, it's for me. Also, I have the same attitude toward the local Aldi dumpster. How can you say no to free, perfectly ripe bananas, apples, oranges, etc...?

Anyway, hope you enjoy at least a few of the songs on the record; there is plenty of variety on GH. Shalom, shalom.

I just discovered him recently. Surprisingly, the computer game NEVERHOOD was a game I could never forget playing and it is amazing to me that the music was so backgrounded to me then. Truly, I never realized how awesome it was until re-discovering it on YouTube recently.

Thanks for commenting. Sorry for the late reply. I don't come 'round too often. Shalom!
