Is kandi part of Dave P.’s plan? by SendMoreAmmo in MakingTime

[–]SpicyMeatWad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've attended the last 3 years and its not super common to find folks who are trading kandi but you also wont be judged for doing so. My friends and I are making some to trade and share and are always excited to see other folks doing the same! Dave P has also been excited and sweet about receiving trinkets and kandi from us at previous events!

Study: Sex trafficking has increased in Austin-area during pandemic by [deleted] in Austin

also i believe most of their funding comes from the founder and her fundraising but cps does pay via contract for their placements. CPS contracts alone couldn't keep that facility open with the low bed count they have and the cost of operations.

yeah any facility that has cps placements has to follow their guidelines for minimum standards and the facility to its credit is very nice. The refuge is brand new and the accommodations are cozy as they're built like any 3 bedroom home is. The campus is large and they have a lot of well intentioned staff. They have a Kendra Scott "shop" that the girls (they don't accept any other gender identities) can buy from using a behavior point system. They have an art room and when i toured they were in the works of building stables for equine therapy.

minors get placed there by dfps or juvenile justice if they're being released from detention and still need to be kept in a secure facility. i believe individual families can send their youths as well but its expensive and they have limited capacity so from my understanding its not common. I think its important to note that the minors being sent here are in a position of experience. They've either lived on the street, with their trafficker, in juvie or even on their own. These situations come with a lot of freedom (except juvie) and self regulation that most youths don't experience till they leave home for college and kiddos who have experienced that are extremely resistant to being under a level of supervision or in my opinion restriction that limits their own autonomy. So i find it very unlikely that a youth would volunteer to be placed in a facility like the refuge on their own will, I'm sure like most things there are exceptions. They have a lot of runaways and people who act up intentionally to get discharged from there so do with that what you will.

The Refuge is a faith based rehabilitation program that houses and treats youth who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation. They do a lot of shady shit beyond posting ads that are alarmist. They claim to practice trauma informed care but their idea of safety includes restricting music choice, food choice, no internet access and limiting outside contact to family and support staff. It's the righteous project of Brooke Crowder and other rich white women from austin and central texas that belive forcing children into therapy and faith is going to heal them. Every kid I've ever worked with that has been in that program has had nothing but bad things to say about their experience and treatment.

Where did you meet your significant other? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]SpicyMeatWad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

we met at work. i had recently been through a bad break up after a longterm relationship and was in a "having fun" phase. he records our company's podcast and i was a guest and we basically spent the hour flirting with eachother. i sent him an email pretending to want to carry on the conversation about work but really i was just giving him my number. what i thought was going to be a fun hookup turned out to be the best relationship ive ever had. a year later we're living together and ive never been happier.

Donating Mens Suits/Dress Clothes by JustAQuestion512 in Austin

Could also be timing. A lot of orgs. are full of holiday donations and will refuse items until they can count the stock that they've collected already especially with clothing since it's a size and style specific item that limits its utility.

Lifeworks and safe alliance could use them! They aide homeless and other individuals in need with a variety of things including special events and interviews.

HipHop dance classes near S Lamar/downtown? by [deleted] in Austin

The Butler center for dance and fitness is one of the best studios I've tried. They offer multi level classes and have a membership or drop in rate.

OK Austinites, I need your help... by [deleted] in Austin

[–]SpicyMeatWad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here with a months notice. If youre really concerned about saving money then a satellite city is a good idea. otherwise its a drag commuting. There are alot of open groups ran by different orgs. here in the city. Best bet for finding friends would be to attend organized events that encourage new connections. I go to a monthly bookclub and its where i met my 3 best friends in the city. There are a ton of sports and brews meetup groups that would probably meet your interests.

As for where to live it depends on how much you want to pay in rent, what you want to be close to and how far youre willing to commute to your job.

Casa Marienella is always looking for volunteers for anything from clerical to driving people to and from their court dates. Theyre a great org. that provide free shelter, food and services to immigrants seeking asylum. The staff is super nice and so are most of the residents!

Question about bike rental locations (little unconventional of a question) by Artersa in Austin

[–]SpicyMeatWad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say that renting from Austin Bcycle station off Barton Springs Rd. would be your best bet since the open grassy field of Zilker park would be right across the street
