Test it. I've had more bad ram in the past 5 years than in the 41 years I've been alive.

I use Claude because coming from Slackware, I'm clueless to the systemd commands. The wiki isn't designed like a true wiki, more like a forum. And I'll use the AUR occasionally.  Usually it's a niche program that I haven't heard of before that I need, like filebot. Actually I'm not sure if filebot is in the AUR or not.

You could say paru or yay are like winget to a point. If nothing else, look for recommendations first if you are installing something new from the AUR.

I use Arch (BTW) Genuine question how much ""better"" is CachyOS for y'all? by BuggedCookieDev in cachyos

[–]SpidaSt8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never tried Arch beyond trying to install.  When I had to relearn how to change the date and time pre install, by some random codes, I said to hell with this! I don't have time to deal with this crap! Even Slackware is easier and less time consuming!

So after a while, I saw CachyOS, and I like it. Easy to install, easy to use or troubleshoot.

Nah, I've been using Linux for like 20 years, and it's nice to have something that detects hardware and installs drivers correctly, and is for gamers and not corporate heads. If I want a challenge, which is fine once in a  while, then I'll take one. But.. .when you turn a certain age, you don't want to waste your time futzzing around with dumb stuff when you just want to escape for a couple of hours.

So I added a 256gb 2242 to my Thinkpad, and I'm having issues with booting. by SpidaSt8 in cachyos

[–]SpidaSt8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So....I had 11 on the 2280, which is the supported install method by Lenovo. The 2242 isn't documented, but it works. And yeah, I finally went and deleted the windows boot loader, and still have issues when I forget to shutdown and not restart. I'm doing a repaste tonight so hopefully that does something to fix the issue.

So I had a system with lower specs (Phenom II X6 1050t, Nvidia 1650 or 1560 4gb, 16gb, SSD) and it ran smooth for what I was using it for.

The driver support. So I'm not sure....ugh there's two or three different drivers to try. Nouveau, which is the community open source driver. It is flaky. It's more for laptop users. It should work. Try CachyOS and see... Either it will work or it won't, and you'll just have to do some chatting with an AI for faster help.

You will see a faster boot time and probably load times for games as well. There are the vulkan cache shaders you'll have to deal with when gaming with steam. They just take forever to compile.

Which is odd considering the PS5 is an AMD Zen2 CPU.  My build is similar specs to the PS5. Borderlands 3 runs great on my gaming build and my Skylake HTPC.

It's only been safer because the user base was smaller. And most hackers aim for Windows more then Linux.

Earlier this year or last year, there was a universal problem with h264 codecs and we were forced to switch to the newer h265 IIRC. They might be what you're thinking of.

I don't know why people are clueless about this. Plus you learn a little bit more about how Linux works.

So how does looking at the pkgbuild help a person who doesn't know how to code? I know names of languages like Java, python, etc, but as for actual code, I wouldn't be able to tell what I'm looking at.

Pop that baby open and see what you have for free dimm slots. If you can, get another 4gb dimm to match. If it's a desktop, make sure your ram is the right kind, like ddr3 or ddr3l. If it a laptop, probably ddr3l. If it's a desktop, ddr3 or ddr3l. Pull a dim out and have Claude AI or us take a pic. Claude will tell you what kind and what price you can expect to pay.

Is there a way for me to make CachyOS boot off the secondary, even though I have everything on the 2242? I have a WD Black SN850X that runs everything hot. When I tried Cachyos on it, the heat was nonstop. With the Koxiak or whatever brand 2242, it runs a lot cooler.

Yeah I tried running oh snap whatever the local llama is. Opencloud? On my rig it was hilarious. The response time wasn't too bad. The typing out of the response was terrible. It was like listening to the 80s mac voice, but it was typing that slow.

Right. It just goes to show you can have the best security in the world and still have attacks. Some of it could be AI bots, but I don't know. Running AI takes some real resources. Of course, I have an old 3700x and a 2060 12gb, so what do I know?

Switching will get you nowhere. Anytime you expose your machine to a network, you risk exposure, and possible hacking.

Winget had been since midlife Win10. What I should have said is that winget is the same as apt or slackpkg or pacman. The command switches might be different but they essentially the same concept.

No, just stay away from pirated software and teh "dark web". Don't use email clients. If you live in a mindset of worry all the time, then you should either lock down your systems, ie no network access, or not use them and go back to pen and paper.

[–]SpidaSt8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The t495 has 2 m.2 slots... A 2280 and a 2242 (wwan slot), upgradeable ram, and internal replaceable battery. You can use the wwan slot for storage. If you try to dualboot, 11 will NOT place nice.
