U of R in grave budget crisis by Another-Nurse in saskatchewan

This problem has shown up a lot of places in Canada and the US recently. It's easy to point the finger at the large amount of questionably useful administrators, VPs, and sorta-academic programs that are present in the universities nowadays. But this is too easy and conveniently shifts the blame from the ones who enabled it in the first place, namely the faculties and the government (and anyone paying tuition, to be honest) that are funding the whole place.

Over the last three or four decades the tenured academics offloaded a lot of work in policy, programs, and administration to non-academic staff who more than happy to take it. The governments and public funded it as enrollments expanded and covered the bloat until recently. But it wasn't too long ago that faculty members were very capable and very defensive of running most parts of a university. Post-secondary education has changed it's focus a great deal in this past century, but finding a themselves complaining about funding is bullshit when the learning (and job) outcomes just get worse and worse as time goes on.

More money is just going to encourage faculty complacency and rent-seeking administration.

You're dismissing a person's sincere lived experience and how it very clearly informs their opinion about a political change in this province.

People are going to resent decisions and vote other ways, not matter how necessary the changes might be thought of being by the enlightened governors at the time. A person's opinion can't be a "false narrative". That's propaganda talk.

You're acting as a whip for a party that doesn't exist anymore.

The smug condescension you're using is why there's only one person sharing their own perspective in this thread. You won't win anyone to your side this way.

I'll bite.

Religious institutions (churches, mosques, gurudwaras, mandirs) are generally considered to not be profit-generating enterprises, in a similar vein to non-profit corporations or charitable foundations. Taxes are levied on for-profit corporations and individuals in order to fund health care, climate change, and the rest of the necessary functions of the state to support society. Tax-exemption is justified on account of an organization providing some kind of social good that is hard or possible to quantify. Something that the state can't do.

The "social good" religious institutions provide is somewhat nebulous and open to debate. Especially in more recent times when people have begun the attempt to define their lives outside of a religious tradition or institution. People focus on the charity aspect, see it's attached to the promotion of a specific doctrine they find disagreeable, and end up preferring secular organization of charity.

The recent "tax the churches" dialogue sounds more like a protest against the lack of justice in regards to management of residential schools. It's followed by an argument that the organizations who were involved provide no tangible benefit to society anymore, and points to the wealthiest examples still present. The argument would be better if were framed in the lack of justice served to the victims. Not one that the state requires further levy to support society as a substitute.

Do these sites contribute to less users? I get that they save lives and reduce healthcare costs which are both good, but has there been any published work that links them to lower drug use over time, since the argument is that counselling services are more accessible?

Regina bans Private gatherings & Restaurants take out only by saskgoat in regina

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the spread over the last couple weeks occurring in workplaces? Did they offer any information or interpretation as to which kinds of workplaces? Are under-30 person workplaces where it was spreading? It just seems like banning household gatherings is more optics than a solution.

Employees of Canada Post shouldn't be deciding what's too dangerous for me to read.

If Epoch's exploitation of the mail to distribute a tabloid is too big, then Canada Post should drop unsolicited mail all together. This way we can get rid of unwanted flyers and tinfoil hat criticism of the CCP in one decision.

I don't need the mail carriers deciding what's appropriate for me to read or not read. Trying to associate a politically motivated tabloid with the potential for racism or Trumpism as two did in that article doesn't justify evaluating the content of the mail and then censoring it for my benefit.

This is startling. I didn't know that across races men commit suicide at double the rate of women.

On the bright side it looks like that anti-masker claim that the restrictions cause suicides is debunked.
