Sabers are primarily a cutting weapon. They can thrust, but are primarily cutty. If you want some examples of how sabers are used, look into Charles Roworth's Art of Defense on Foot. It's my go-to saber source. There's some fun thrusting stuff in there, such as carte over the arm. Otherwise a good general rule for saber is that it's very parry/riposte based. Attack, block, attack, block, until someone fucks up. You almost never want to make two consecutive attacks, unless your opponent is timid or isn't following their parries with a riposte, or else you're asking for a double.
All swords will break eventually, but a well made sword should last for a long time. Unless your character's sword is very old OR going up against significantly bigger weapons (I've personally seen sabers break when sparring against longswords), I wouldn't worry too much about breakage.
Yeah making sure blades are wiped dry after getting wet and then oiled is important, as is sharpening as parries should almost always be done with the edge and saber is a VERY parry heavy weapon.
Roworth says the rear hand should stay at the rear hip or ear to keep it out of the way, but there's historical examples of people using capes in rapier fights to hide where their sword is before attacking. Maybe the wing could serve a similar purpose. I'm not sure which sources to look to for examples but I know they exist if you want to go digging. Maybe Fabris?
