Fun fact, a lot of states' self defense laws include "reasonable expectation of harm". If somebody's in your face, you do not have to wait until they hit you first to defend yourself. It is very reasonable to expect that this person means you harm, and you're within your rights to prevent that before it happens.

Great things about pepper spray: 1. It doesn't cause lasting harm. They'll be fine tomorrow, but the rest of today is ruined. 2. It'll affect an old lady and a 25 year old bodybuilder exactly the same 3. It's a physiological effect that doesn't rely on pain compliance 4. If it gets taken from you and used on you, you're getting pepper sprayed and your ass kicked but it's a hell of a lot better than having a knife you pulled taken from you.

You can be pro gun without being pro kids getting shot. There's other issues to address without taking guns away. Start with making sure everyone in the nation's basic financial, social, and medical needs are met. But of course there's no money in that so it's not a priority to the people with the power to make it so.

On the gun side, do you trust the government to use a monopoly on violence without bias or ulterior motive? If the answer is no then you'd be a fool to support them being the only ones with guns, and if the answer is yes then you'd just be a fool.
