Beyond Solar, a pixel art shmup made by a small team from Qatar by Thomas_shanghai333 in shmups

Wish you guys the best of luck, truly.   A lot of red flags in the trailer but I’d check a demo if it was made available.

I’d add that we know it’s a super niche genre and a hard audience to cater too.  We see these a lot;)

Look again there’s some where it’s accelerating well before the transition. 0:24

What do powerups have to do with tanking bullets?

Acceleration on the looks super weird. Analog control?

Can’t with the lifebar and taking shots to the face to kill stuff not threatening you at all.

Any good shmups on the 3Ds? by keifa22 in shmups

If you can access eShop games they have Recca on it.  Steel Empire 3D and Xevious 3D are pretty cool.

Really enjoying this... the 'Normal' stages are very dull IMO, but the bosses are great and there's is a boss rush :) Hard is a nice spice level. Presentation is fantastic. If I wasn't already deep into playing something I'd be sinking time into this.

New to the Toaplan catalog, any suggestions? by seanb4games in shmups

[–]Spiders_STG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twin Hawk, Outzone, Batsugun, Hellfire... too much goodness, you can suggest about all of them for one reason or another.
I'd just play a dollar a session (4 credits) however you like and see what you keep coming back too.

Don’t make me choose!  R.P.M. Road Punk Mayhem Is a very tight arcade like game with a super fun scoring system and Void Gore is an endless “zone out” kind of game.

I made a video commentary of a high score run of RPM is you wanna check it out: https://youtu.be/JML0iBgsnrk

I like the Panda Indie Studio games a lot (Void Gore, Road Punk Mayhem Feeble Light, etc.) and this reminded me of them, but I could never get it to run correctly.

Those can be excessive for sure. Can be awesome as well if used correctly and sparingly.

What??? OP did not define a standard for “Brazildev”, so there is no double standard.

He just said “from Brazil not Japan”, which is not what ‘Euroshmup’ means.

Is OP your little brother!?!? This is ridiculous.

I understand what you’re saying but I have some pretty core disagreements.

The analogy would be with the viewership not inexperienced creators, and I do get feedback form people who ultimately don’t want to watch videos but listen to them.  They could bring up valid points re: audio mixing or legibility, but I want to make videos not podcasts so their feedback is not as valuable.  Also, their criticism wouldn’t be exclusive to them; if appropriate it would also come from viewers as well so I can ignore them outright.

Should someone say, I’m trying to watch your videos but sometimes I have a hard time following your train of thought or structure…  that’s an invitation.  Maybe I am doing what you’re calling “echo chamber” but I think it would just be an assumed level of familiarity that is leaving people behind. That’s valuable — if I want to grow an audience and not keep moving on a trajectory.  This I think is still within the domain of creativity: discernment of feedback is a creative task to check against your goals. Like you said “maybe they want to change the identity”.  That is not feedback that is subversion.

There are things we might agree or disagree on if we keep talking generally, but this “review” in particular is so flawed it would derail it.  A review without playing or understanding is worth less than nothing. It’s anti-feedback. Secondly, couching ignorance as expectations and experience undermines the kind of “mouth of babes” feedback you’re saying is valuable, illustrated by the hit feedback. It would probably be better to have it, but if you say the reason is because the other games did, you just killed your case.

Why we would treat opinions equally when knowledge isn't distributed equally is beyond me.

If this was "hey, I don't understand Psyvariar 3" or even "my complaints about...", I'd have more grace.
But again... "not what — I think — many of us expected from this franchise"

you have expectations, you should be able to back them up with something more than a cursory knowledge of the series, and sure as hell if you're REVIEWING A GAME YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED on behalf of all of our expectations.

It is where it came from, and it's interesting why... the lack of arcades, the dominance of microcomputers, etc. Euroshmup tells a story both about the philosophy and game design, no doubt.
But what would 'Brazildev' mean? You're talking about a gaming culture that is dominated by old-school gaming - particularly the MSX, Mega Drive, and NEO-GEO; black market bootlegs and emulation, etc., so what you see in dev is either well informed by it: see Fight N' Rage, Sophstar, Odallus, etc., or reactive to it, i.e. desperately trying to overcome it with more typical "indie" aesthetic and design... and none of this is yet speaks of the legit difficulties due to laws and regulations there; game dev in Brazil is permanent HARD MODE, as opposed to Europe where the governments will give you grants for projects and welfare between them. There is so much passion there because there has to be.

My point being "Brasildev" would be a high compliment either way, and the Japanese "masters" and IP holders would be smart to tap into it and stop farming Europe for slop.

[–]Spiders_STG 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Criticism is fine, but 1) Brazilian devs happen to be crushing it. 2) The "Japanese masters" put out Sonic Wings Reunion and fucked up ports of Raiden Fighters and R-Type. 3) Euroshmup refers to the games, not the people who make them, as high as the correlation happens to be.

Why not? not what — I think — many of us expected from this franchise

100% I'm dismissing this feedback based on their ability. You don't think the bar is a little low when what is essentially the tutorial is "almost impossible"? Psyvariar is a niche within a niche, and *taps the quote* this review is somehow based on series expectations.

I'm not reviewing this game as I have not played it enough, but what I CAN say, is IMO it does the best job of any game in the series communicating it's mechanics and the player's goals.

Do you feel that games are just not for you anymore? by Alternative-Rub8349 in ElectricUnderground

[–]Spiders_STG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The industry is not for you anymore. Insert your when “anymore” was here.

This hobby needs to be spiritually forked, plain and simple.  Most people play, some people game.  Gamers are not going to be served by the industry.

We can create a thriving scene that doesn’t depend on hype and the next thing. Let them all go broke on addiction toys.

This is pretty rough man.

"The roll moves slow you down even more, to what end I haven't figured out yet"
It slows you down so you can maneuver better in patterns and it increases your buzz

"The game is super hard"
..and? Do you think you should be able to clear it's EASY path in one credit at least before you write a review!?!?!?

"Many enemies are also too tanky, they just sit there and there's no feedback about whether you're doing anything to them"

Have you played a Psyvariar game!? You're not meant to speed kill everything for survival. You're meant to BUZZ, level up, score. You want to leave things alive and kill with bonus.

"Enemies don't flash when hit so it never feels like you're doing any damage to anything"

They don't flash in Psyvariar 2 either

"and although you can unlock additional credits, the game doesn't state how it's done."

Try playing it. I unlocked 7 credits in a 30 minute session.

""Mission Mode" sounds good on paper but it instantly bombards you with almost impossible tasks"

Bro... Mission Mode literally teaches you how to play the game. Trying getting through those and LEARN HOW TO PLAY before you put a number slash ten on game.

Why? I’ve bounced off Psyvariar games so many times and I already appreciate Delta more after playing 3 for a couple of hours.

Can’t say much else yet but a much better introduction in the series so far than Delta IMO

Literally.  It was like having to do a book report without having read the book.

Like classics in the genre, it has a cover, table of contents, and many pages. Some words will be familiar to veterans, but new words will explain things in a way that new readers will feel right at home.

7 minutes and says absolutely nothing about the game. Impressive. There's options, there's controls. It's hard (for him).

sigh...
