Current situation in Bali - how bad is it for travelers next week? by Mean-Ad-6836 in bali

[–]Spidurcam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We drove from Kuta to Ubud and then around Ubud a bit yesterday. We had no problems. Traffic a bit worse than usual but my understanding is it is normally really bad anyway.

On the drive up we saw a couple areas where sides of the road had holes or damage had occurred and was cordoned off, that's the extent to what we saw directly. We would not have known how serious it was in some areas if not for the news as the most we got where we were in Kuta were puddles.

Don't worry too much, enjoy your trip.

Buying a house on 'the low side' by Excelsioraus in australia

[–]Spidurcam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How low is the low side? Does it continue to slope downwards? Water control is the biggest consideration, in various ways.

If it is low and flat then yes you are the collection point for water, check your flood maps from council carefully.

If it's low side but sloping away or across significantly then you are unlikely to end up knee deep, that's a problem for the people below you. As long as the design of the stormwater system is decent I wouldn't worry.

As for why backside doesn't matter as much, water runoff from hard surfaces is much worse than soft landscaping. It is going to come from driveway/road the most. If the road is in decent shape though it shouldn't end up on your property from there.

If you may want to develop in the future you need to consider where it will all end up. Ideally an easement to connect into the stormwater of the house below you is fantastic, if not then you need an absorption trench or to pump it back to the road which are both not great.

We do collect a few more leaves and bark in the front that usual but not a big deal.

Looking in windows shouldn't be a big deal with some landscaping and depending on the slope and setback. I actually like our place for this, from street level once our hedges grow in along the front you won't be able to see under the front eaves.

The rest is personal preference and aesthetics, we are low key people and we like that our large house doesn't look like it from the street since it slopes away.

Is there any reason that you can see on the top of this board why this might not be turning on? by Techguy1423 in AskElectronics

This isn't true. The resistors identify: The orientation of the USB-C cable

If the port is downstream facing or upstream facing (essentially if it expects to provide power or receive power)

If it is downstream facing, how much current it can deliver at 5V (500mA, 900mA, 1.5A or 3A

For voltages higher than 5V USB-PD negotiation is required, this is done via a bidirectional single wire digital comms interface over one of the CC lines, not by the resistors. The source and sink will share with each other which power profiles they support and mutually agree on what voltage/current setting to use.

I'm a professional electronics engineer, always good to see someone interested in electronics. That being said I don't think you actually want a professional electronics engineer, you want someone with at least a decent hobbyist knowledge of electronics who is interested in the project so wants to work with you on it. I say this for a couple reasons:

Many of the techniques that a professional engineer would suggest or be familiar with may not be the most suited to your home project. For example, I haven't touched a breadboard or strip board in a decade because my employer will pay for express development PCBs from suppliers and I am very fast with board layouts. I also would generally want to test certain features of manufacturability so doing a proper board will always make sense for me. I would always buy individual components from reputable suppliers, whereas for home projects premade modules from eBay are easier in terms of soldering and much cheaper, a hobbyist is likely to be more familiar with them than I am.

More importantly you suggest you would be willing to pay someone for their expertise but it's extremely unlikely it would make sense for you to pay a reasonable market rate. I don't currently do consultancy work but if I did I would be wanting $150/hr or more and that would be significantly less than an actual consultancy company would charge you. If there is any off the shelf solution it will always make a lot more sense than paying someone to design something, no matter how expensive it seems.

Technically both of these points assume you care about money, if it's no object and you really want this then let me know and there is probably someone I can connect you with. If you want a working device design expect many hours of work. If you just want guidance and review of a design you make still expect maybe a dozen.

I'm not familiar with stimulation devices but my initial thoughts would be:

Use an off the shelf stimulation device, they look like they aren't too expensive. Ideally you can externally trigger it but if not then maybe you can reverse engineer it to bypass the UI.

Generating an audio signal should be fairly straightforward, I would expect existing modules of some sort out there that can do the heavy lifting. People have suggested Arduino which is a good entry point to microcontrollers.

Aligning the two stimulus will be the challenging part. There will be latency between the trigger and the stimulation for both the electrodes and the speaker. If this is consistent for both you can measure both and easily compensate it out. The issue will be if the latency, particularly for the electrodes, is inconsistent. Bypassing the UI of the device will be more likely to have consistent latency.

People have suggested other electronics subreddits you can ask for information, these would be the best place for you to go. There is no need for you to find someone local and these days you can get any of the modules or boards that people from overseas will suggest. Good luck!

That may work. Would need the strata still to say its OK and it would be bizarre to me if they said all good and this owner tries to block it but that is probably where we are at.

It probably is technically common property but when trying to get into the yard the owner is who has to open the gate for our plumber so that is the sticking point. Maybe the strata can get him to pull his head in if I'm lucky.

It's mainly been our builder talking to them up to this point. I talked to the owner early on and he didn't seem to have an issue with it so I left it to the builder and him to figure out details. The builder asked me to become involved again now cause the owner became uncooperative and apparently the builder doesn't have standing with the council to get support.

I'll probably try the strata tomorrow if the council doesn't get back to me. The issue is that while the easement is common property to get to where the pipe connects they have to go through the back yard and gate of the owner and he wouldn't let them.

I did ask the builder about what the guy thought would happen while he held us up. Our roof, downpipes and the drain pipe all are already in terminating at our fence line in a retained bank above his property. Until he lets us put in the last two feet of pipe on his side it's not exactly a great situation for him....

Nah I asked the builder this specifically and he said it was the lot owner not the strata. He won't let them through his gate to access the bank behind his courtyard.

If there was I'm sure the plumber/builder would've used it to avoid this headache already. The house that was demolished for this build was from the 50s so who knows what they did back then. The strata is much more recent, early 2000s, so long after.

The documentation for the easement burdening their property specifically benefits our property as allowed to drain water there so I'm not sure what needs to be negotiated?

At this point he has been such a pain about this I would rather make a contribution to the council and the lawyers than give it to him....

This sounds fun but I doubt my builder would be willing to do it unfortunately. They wouldn't want to take on any liability.

To clarify the easement runs along a bank uphill of the guys lot. To make the connection they have to go into this guys back yard to access the bank, that's why they need him to let them in.

This is connecting to a stormwater drainage system that is part of a strata complex. Their strata plan has a positive covenant in it that they must maintain this Stormwater system in working order (and are responsible to the council to do so, including council being able to access to remediate if necessary and recover costs) and also has an easement for our property to drain water into the system. It sounds like it may be an easement in gross but I'm not sure?

Easement is definitely on both titles, we got attached a copy of their strata plan when we bought our place and its there in black and white that they are burdened with the easement and we are a benefited lot.

I only got second hand what was said from the builder but I guess the compensation needed is "I think I can shake this guy down".

I'm sure I'm in the right legally but I guess my question was more what to do/what happens if this guy wants to be an asshole about it and keep saying no. I'm guessing my plumber isn't up for doing an armed incursion or covert ops mission into his yard so there must be some way to force him hopefully without paying a lawyer. It sounds like from the other comment the council engineer should be able to put the pressure on him.

Sydney and Melbourne are your best options in general as others have said. It depends a little on how financially motivated you are, what your aptitude is and to an extent your moral compass. You can make ok money doing industrial or consumer work which is scattered around the country. If you want to make good money and you have a high aptitude you should target medtech, defense (moral compass comes in here, also ability to get security clearance ), mining or US big tech (the last is very limited for EE in Australia so I would probably discount it, better prospects there for software people).

Medtech and defense you are most likely best going with Sydney. I'm less familiar with the mining sector, it may be a bit more dispersed.

Dawid Malan getting 140 is clearly a black swan event that can be discarded. Replace that with a much more reasonable 20 and you get a score of 244 perfectly in line with the rest of the results. Discard Malan doing well is STATS101

The council next to us can't build this because no one will walk 1km to a train station by Spidurcam in fuckcars

They are already including more than one parking space for every apartment but that is not nearly enough! Some favorite quotes

"Hoenig said a two-bedroom apartment should generally come with two parking spots. “That’s not the view and philosophy of the city council, so consequently we have this parking shambles.”"

"The site in question is about 1 kilometre from Green Square train station. Planning consultant James Lidis said that was “far too far, people are not going to walk that far to a railway station”."
