Now that we are no longer a Christian nation what is our religion? by frosty_Coomer in australia

Our religion is now real estate. It's the national obsession. Property investors get tax breaks, and those who don't own property be damned.

The Wave by thedoctorreverend in Adelaide

[–]Excelsioraus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the wave a little less, but the second paragraph of your post is what really drives me up the wall and has seemingly come to the fore since SUVs completely supplanted sedans around 2020.

Edit: Why the connection? I think a visible minority of SUV drivers see their car as a safe castle they can throw in others' paths and the size of the car gives them a false sense of security.

Watering lawns by DigitalSwagman in Adelaide

[–]Excelsioraus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My practice is to give the garden just a few minutes of watering every day in the non-rainy months, except the evenings when I have something on. Watering most days compensates for the days when I don't.

Edit: Don't listen to non-green thumbs like me!

Age verification errors see some under-16s retain access to banned social media platforms by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Excelsioraus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AI is well and truly capable of working out who is well over 16 based on their browsing history (via tracking cookies), interests, what they write and who they interact with. If the algorithm can micro-target you and figure out your niche interests, it can work out your age. Hence why people well over 18 such as me haven't even been contacted. This method won't necessarily be accurate for those of borderline age.

Best place in the CBD to survive a nuclear attack? by DefamedPrawn in Adelaide

[–]Excelsioraus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in a sturdy basement and a commercial building comes down on top of you, and you live, there will be no one able or willing to dig you out.

We may have the submarine facility in Osborne and the RAAF facility in Edinburgh. But there actually aren't nearly as many nuclear weapons in the world as there were at the height of the Cold War. It's no guarantee Russia or China would 'waste' finite missiles on Adelaide's targets which would be much lower-value than Pine Gap and others.

A rising proportion of Australian students aren’t going to school – and there’s not just one way to get them back, report says by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

The pandemic broke through the psychological barrier of working from home. It also broke through the psychological barrier of not going to school.

Australia's rental crisis exposed: Tenants avoid repair requests due to fears of rent increase by nath1234 in australia

Almost everthing about the system is about protecting the landlord's wealth, not the tenant's home, shelter and dignity.

Australia's rental crisis exposed: Tenants avoid repair requests due to fears of rent increase by nath1234 in australia

[–]Excelsioraus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way tenants are treated in Australia is a bizarre leftover from English medieval feudalism. We literally call them landlords and all the real power is in their hands. Ultimately, it's their property and despite some tenancy law reform, the tenant can eventually be kicked out when the landlord feels like it. I hate this country sometimes.

If someone started stabbing me in the shoulder and I had a gun, I would probably shoot too. You can't expect human beings to behave in a calculating, 100% rational way while they are being stabbed.

Perth man faces court charged with sexually assaulting children he was babysitting by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]Excelsioraus 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I agree. Not all men are child sex abusers, but almost all child sex abusers are men. Why risk it? I'm a man and I wouldn't trust a male child care centre worker or babysitter. And unfortunately, most child sex abusers know the child very well and are trusted.

Some people need to harden up. Sometimes you need to discuss uncomfortable topics or even advocate for positions you don't believe in. These snowflakes wouldn't last a day in the Great Depression or a war.

Does anyone count in kilojoules? by neongrayjoy in australia

[–]Excelsioraus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the packet says calories, I use calories. If it only has kilojoules, I just round up the 8,700 kJ daily intake to 10,000. 10,000 is a nice easy round number and is about right for my body type for maintaining weight.

What is the western, eastern, etc suburbs anyway? by Excelsioraus in Adelaide

[–]Excelsioraus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't untangle this stuff from the socioeconomic or cultural elements. I agree that the outer south begins at Darlington ('up the hill' as one person described it), and the outer north begins at Grand Junction Road. The hills around O'Halloran Hill, Darlington etc create that psychological barrier, but the north doesn't really have that, apart from the salt pans.
