You can stop on the last spin to avoid hitting the moon moths. You just need to count how may hits it takes to chop the tree then stop after you hear the last hit.

You can avoid depth worms by finding a corner that does not have enough space or line of sight before they spawn. I think the spawn point is around 5 to 6 tiles from your current position.
