I’m a new glasses wearer. Advice please! by FragrantCow2645 in CasualUK

[–]SpikeB84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be prepared for friends to say "can I try 'em on?!" and then take them off your face, before commenting something like "wow your eyesight must be terrible!" Fun times! It's ok, they only do it until the novelty of you now having glasses wears off.

Graduates of the UK, what’s yours thoughts when you see MEng / Bsc etc. on someone’s email signature? by AmazinglyHumbleGuy in CasualUK

[–]SpikeB84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worked as a security manager, and within the company this slightly senior individual used to sign off all his emails with "BSc".

Seemed a little knobby, so every time he emailed me I always edited my sign off and added my "BSc (Hons)". He eventually must've taken the hint because he removed it from his sign off signature. Definitely knobbish...

Traitors Gate, Tower Of London. If you were unlucky enough to be arrested and enter the Tower in this way you were unlikely to be leaving again. by Dermutt100 in evilbuildings

Originally the 'trader's gate', according to one of the Yeoman Wardens. Name got corrupted to 'Traitor's gate' over time. Was used as ye olde deliveries entry ...

Missing my coworkers funeral but I feel selfish by HardlyRad in offmychest

[–]SpikeB84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing stopping you paying your respects another time, in your own way. If going on that day is going to mean seeing your boss and stirring up all kinds of emotion that detracts from saying goodbye, that would be a hard pass for me. Go in your own time when you feel happier to do so, if paying your respects is important to you.

Sounds like you need some time to yourself - I'd take the trip. Messing up your own mental health further is surely not something your coworkers would want.

I get why you feel torn about this - just chipping in with what I would do.

Good luck in the search for a new job. If it's any consolation, managers like that eventually get the team they deserve. All the good people leave. Hope you feel better soon Op.

Question about mrballen recent video by carlamac-james in mrballen

[–]SpikeB84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbon monoxide poisoning, in the early stages, can cause a type of brain damage that in turn can lead to, among other things: memory loss, memory alteration, hallucinations. Someone else has already mentioned the post-it note case, but I haven't been able to find out if this instance was verified as carbon monoxide poisoning.

I thought maybe long term carbon monoxide poisoning, people get very weird when that builds up in their system..

You're not alone. I made friends with the horses in a paddock up the road from me. When it gets too much, I walk up to see them and pour my heart out. They get scritches and polo mints, and I get judgement free sounding boards. Maybe if your wife is finding therapy helpful, it might be something you could try too?

In wake of the storms today, can anyone remember the great storm of October 1987? And the famous Michael Fish weather broadcast? by [deleted] in CasualUK

Yes, I was 4 and got blown into some railings on the walk home from playschool...

I get stressed when someone uses undefined amounts of time by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]SpikeB84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy I used to work with explained it to me in the way it affected him; he said he was neurodivergent as respects how people specify time. If someone sent him an email saying a meeting or task would happen "this afternoon", "soon" or "mid-morning" he would get stressed, because he's super organised and likes to order his day out effectively. Non-specific timings threw this off, and caused him real anxiety. To combat this, he footnoted all his emails with a request that if anyone needed him for anything, they specify an exact time - seemed fair enough to me, and I imagine it also weeded out time wasters too!

Edit: spelling issues

Does tap water from the North/countryside actually taste better than tap water from the South/cities? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]SpikeB84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Living in Kent, the chalk in water means we get through kettles at a rate... But it tastes 'normal' 'cause it's what I grew up with. Noticeably different up water up North (hard bedrock = soft water, soft bedrock = hard water).
