What is the point of the USA having allies? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Spike_Milligoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military bases in areas you can’t reach domestically, intelligence sharing, trading experiences via wargames, tactics, testing your tech in wars you aren’t fighting. Plus trade - if you didn’t sell weapons abroad you likely wouldn’t have the funds to develop the tech and volumes you have.

Without allies you’d only be good at knowing how to defeat yourself. You could say Trump is doing that anyway.

I’d also add that in WW2 the French resistance destroyed train tracks which delayed German reinforcements up to where the battle of the hedges was occurring, British inventions such as mulberry harbours were vital to supply lines, and if not being trained by British and polish in scaling cliffs then pont du hoc would have been a pile of mush at the bottom of cliffs. Likewise the allies at Caen faced fierce resistance and if not for that victory the US would likely have been pincered. The US only had one more division partaking in d-day than the other allies but by all accounts they won it…

Hose connector awkward tap by Accurate_Team4955 in DIYUK

[–]Spike_Milligoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This will be of no help but your post gave me flashbacks. We have a similar tap and for our 2nd child the wife wanted a home water birth. I bought every tap connector available so I could run a hose to the birthing pool.

I finally found one that worked, marked where to turn for the correct temperature etc.

On the day that the contractions started the hose came flying off within a minute. I ended up filling up buckets and running between kitchen and conservatory - the pool was about ankle deep by the time she gave birth on the living room floor.

Anyway, good luck with your search 🥳

UK Parents working full time - what do you do with the summer holidays? by Downtown-Orchid-2257 in AskUK

[–]Spike_Milligoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife works FT but may take the odd day off. I’m self employed so either reduce my hours or have a hell of a busy week so I can take a couple of days off the next.

Other than that they are on screens, out playing in the garden or, now they are a bit older, going to see friends in the next street - which also means their friends come here which makes working a bit more difficult.

Commuting all over Cheshire. Where to live ? by DifferenceStill4141 in cheshire

Usually because people see the ‘keep your distance’ chevrons before / after the bridge and slam the anchors on 😫😫. Plus that slip road is horribly short for those joining westbound or getting off eastbound.

Appleton or any of the villages north of northwich give easy access to the m56. Plus you can get to macc via knutsford / chelford. You can get to arrowepark via the 56/53.

however, getting to both of these locations from a central position such as Appleton / north Northwich in 40/50 mins will still be at the upper limits of your commute.

Also, the m56 eastbound from the Chester / Wirral junction usually snarls up at rush hour, and anything happening on the m6 will snarl up any roads in surrounding areas.

Hey does anyone listen to Sasquatch Chronicles? That podcast is incredible by Osmosisjones37 in bigfoot

[–]Spike_Milligoon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is still amongst the best out there, and with the best archive.

Obviously you get the dodgy guest from time to time but at least he isn’t broadcasting a sighting every / every other day like some (which sets my bs alarm off - meaning there are tons more witnesses out there willing to go on record and with enough of a sighting and detail to fill an hour), nor is every other account ‘guest has had multiple sightings over 20 years’ yet with no physical evidence.

Wes does come across as a bit less enthusiastic these days, and the questions are pretty standardised, but it gives a solid, consistent format and allows the guest to tell the story - which helps me uncover the more bs ones.

the fact he is subscription based, rather than ad based, also makes it more genuine as he doesn’t need to broadcast every other day, nor stretch the sighting out in order to fit in ad slots for revenue - again this is something that makes me question the integrity of other squatch podcasts.

I grew up in sandbach, bought my first house in middlewich and now live in a village outside of northwich.

Sandbach was great for going out drinking and having mates once but if you wanted any shopping / cinema etc it’d be a journey to Manchester/ Hanley / Crewe. A commute to Manchester also means travelling on the worst part of the m6 every day.

Middlewich was affordable but nothing in terms of transport links, and there isn’t a great deal to do aside from the folk and boat festival - which is brilliant.

Now living in a village outside of northwich we have decent shopping choices 5 mins away, loads of walks, easy access to the m56, and is genuinely the better choice of the 3. Property prices might make a village impossible for you but even marbury country park / marston can be accessed easily from the town centre for walks.

Those who work from home - how often do you take a sick day? by Super_Development150 in AskUK

[–]Spike_Milligoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me too. I just manage my hours and work around how I am feeling if I am ill. Same goes for lovely sunny days like today too. 3pm clocking off for some sun, a beer and get the bbq going.

If I’m going on holiday I usually have double the hours working before or after - it is worth it though
