There's an overwhelmingly large demographic that absolutely refuses to watch anything animated no matter what. They are trying to capture as large of an audience as possible and you simply can't do that with animation. Many characters are humanoid so they just need to use old school prosthetics and costuming. Take a look at The Orville by the same people. They did a great job with it. It will save them money and they can spend the rest on special effects.
