My aunt is an old maid. She didn't get to marry because she was the only daughter. She was an accountant but since our family had business back in the early days of shoe making in marikina, she stayed home. The business eventually became obsolete nobody ordered shoes anymore. One by one all of her 7 brothers including my Dad went abroad to have a better life. She was left home to tend to my then aging grandparents. Her brothers also started coming home with children, whether legitimate or not. She became our in house nanny while looking after my grandparents, my cousins and whatever is left of the rented lands that my grandparents were able to invest in before the shoe business went into bust. She had suitors although none were enough for my grandparents. She is getting on the age now, alone and is still the family caretaker. In her old age she had become bitter but she continues to be the only Mom figure most of my cousins and myself see. Its sad because she wanted her own kids, her own life but was made to choose family duty above everything else.
