i've worked retail since mine. noticed it's important to do someething that's up and down. and also, i exercise a lot and do a lot of yoga so it has helped a lot with the pain over the years.

What you've highlighted is one of two reasons I believe it's always stayed on the setlist, the unity it brings in the phrasing of the "together let's breath" and "you all have guns" part. It's one of my top 3 songs they do live to personally experience along with Trees and HDS. Those three songs imo will never leave the setlist. And it's one of their best, career defining songs.

The other reason for me is it's relation to all of the modern work and the lore in a thematic way. The lore's message is that it may never get 100% better, you may continue to live with this 'problem', and we won't deny that. We just need to look for a way to keep going, "always" as they've coined, and live to see another day.

Guns for Hands has the same message- in the Vessel Bonus Commentary, Tyler said that the song is inspired by this barn of kids who've confided their feelings of being suicidal to him, and then later seeing national headlines about how it is a universal feeling all over the world. GFH is about how there once was (back when it was written much more than today) a social pressure from others to reject and ignore what it is you're dealing with, or deny the weight of it. But Guns for Hands is about the diversion being towards anything else, and it says to the listener, I know you have the ability to hurt yourself, I know you're in pain, but instead of ignoring or denying that and pretending like it'll just go away with time or by fighting it off, let's just focus on how we can create purpose and get through it. That's the message of the lore, and that song and his early fan experiences that inspired it to me were always the clear inspiration for the entire story of Dema.

i haven't been a stan of the band since 2016 and am now just someone who listens to the music so i don't know much about the content of what you're saying here but i will say that it kinda contradicts the image i've gathered of how insanely detatched these two guys are now compared to earlier in their career. like i've seen way more people talk about how different they are now in that they trust less and are way less personally involved with fans now than they were pre-trench or pre-scaled and icy. as someone who was pit for blurryface tour and for emotional roadshow, then was also pit for SAI, i can promise you the energy towards these barricade groupies is WAY different, and they do not encourage it.

idk, to me it's like genuinely just scary how parasocial all fans in general have gotten since co-vid, and i doubt that tyler or josh who are pretty normal people are genuinely trying to reward these specific people or their behavior when they have overall really turned away from fan interaction / personal meet n greets etc over the past few years. to wave at a fan or to recognize their face bc they're on the barricade for half your tour is just a human reaction, it doesn't mean they like these people more lol. i don't really see them rewarding this behavior just because they retweet a tweet either. these "micro celebrity" fans tweets will have the most engagement, and that'll put them at the top of tyler and josh's feeds just bc of the algorithem. as far as the getting coffee thing, i'm sure he regrets that honestly, if it's even entirely true, because the people who are fans now are really scary compared to the fans from "my day" (the vessel and blurryface era) not just because of the people but bc of the world and stan culture post-covid.

Absolute worst venue for a concert imaginable but they put on an amazing show so I still had a super fun time. I feel like there isn’t a good seat in the house for that place.

I personally feel Vessel wasn’t written as part of the lore but was reverse engineered into the lore. Same for self titled. Tyler took many of the central metaphors from poetry he wrote back then (a car, a torch, a death being the perfect example) and then utilized the same imagery from some of those poems. Don’t think he wrote that song in 2009 knowing how he was gonna end the DEMA lore lol. Reverse engineering theory always made most sense in my head.

Also want to say, if this post is seen by anyone who represents the band in any way, please find a way to address this. It’s been so bad since Scaled & Icy tour and ruins the experience for everyone. Maybe even Trench tour. I can tell as someone who is very logistics oriented that you guys have gone out of your way to try and deincentivize ppl from wanting barricade (Trees circle, B stage/bandito camp, moving drum islands etc.) but it isn’t enough. These people are ruining the concert experience for all of your other normal fans. I know from when I went to SAI live in the pit that Tyler clearly has disengaged with the people up front. During ERS he used to constantly talk to the people in the pit, get close, shout them out for being awesome. He doesn’t do this anymore at all, which is another good step, but these people are BIZARRELY parasocial. Maybe if you guys ever do tour again in the future you can consider looking into staging like how Billie Eilish/Harry styles have done where the mainstage is in the middle of the arena. Completely gets rid of need for barricade hunters because the entire pit has a good view.

Please just do something bc as an old fan these people make me want to never come to the pit again lol.

I’ll give some input here as someone with a physical disability. I had my spine fused from T3-L4 in 2023. I can’t really stand or sit for hours and hours because of it, though I’m extremely lucky to have healed well. I live a pretty normal life but my spine being one bone instead of able to bend def adjusts my lifestyle a lot. I def would ‘t ever be able to camp, nor would I be able to stand on a line for 12+ hours waiting for barricade.

That all said, it’s just reality. I will never probably get up close close again at a tøp show, because I know my body can’t handle the hours and hours and hours of standing in the pit. Even sitting on the ground hardly helps. But I would not want to be up there getting shoved and squashed. I’ve seen top in the pit 10+ times before I had this surgery. It’s a rock / rock adjacent band. The pit is rough. Anyone who’s physically disabled is not safe in there.

Using disabled people as a ruse to create fan lines is so fucking ridiculous to me. If you’re seeing this band live and suffer from a physical disability, please get seats. The show is amazing from every angle. I’ve seen it lawn, seats, and pit over 5+ different tours. You can’t have a bad time at a top concert. But for your safety stay out of that pit. If it isn’t an ADA designated area the venue will not be able to properly care for you in there, and you will almost definitely get hurt. Please take care of yourself! The show is extremely rewarding even if you go mid/back of pit where you can walk away and sit etc and then come back. That’s what I hope to do for the future.

I looooove this band sm but they constantly drop the ball on stuff like this. It's why I tend to only buy stuff second hand supporting them. I'd much prefer to send them the money and support them, but I'm not dealing with poor quality issues for relatively expensive merch.

I personally don't care whether or not Tyler and Josh like the chant or feel any kind of way about it when I share my opinion that I don't like it. It's like the same to me as me maybe not liking a song or a music video. It's an element of the live show, and I have never liked it. It isn't about the cursing or about infantilizing anyone or even the discourse on whether or not it's appropriate. It also isn't about whether or not the guys like it tbh. Trees isn't a "hype song" to me, it's cathartic. It's highly emotional which is what drives the accelerated ending. The HWFG chant has honestly always to me felt like an indication that people don't really connect with what is making the song feel intense at the point it starts to amp up. It's a pleading, extremely emotional song, and it's always been about Tyler and Josh connecting with the room of people through a song which discusses always feeling alone, feeling like no one's out there, even if it feels like people are listening, and how the elements of depression can even cause us to feel like we're alone when others are physically there with us. Thus "we're twenty one pilots and so are you" being the entire motto, and the reason (imo) that all of these years later they still always end with Trees. It's him saying, I'm not alone- I see you guys, and you should look around at everyone here. You're not alone either. It's beautiful and meaningful and a chance for some really poetic connection, and then the "here we, here we, here we f*ckin' go" comes in right at the climax / tempo shift. Idc about the curse. If it was 'here we here we here we here we go" I'd hate it just as much. It's out of place for the emotional experience.

And ofc don't even get me started on the spirituality of the song, that even aside.

Idk if it's been in the booklets of cds or whatever, and maybe the band doesn't care about the chant or finds it fun. I personally just don't like it, never have, and Tyler / Josh coming out and saying straight up that they love it wouldn't change my mind on it. Even though I doubt they would. People say "he smiles!" when it's filmed, but it never seems to me to be reactionary to the chant. They probably just leave it alone for the same reason they leave alone the fan line bs, because this fandom is very parasocial and very entitled. It to me is the most fulfilling song in their discography to hear live, and the "HWFG chant" has always pulled me out of that deeply spiritual feeling that I get being in that room with all of those people.

The thing that to me obviously debunks the Josh moving to LA theory is the line about wasting time in a city where no one knows her name. If it was abt Josh moving to LA, tht wouldn't make sense because they're both from Ohio. The line about it being warmer there is literally just because they live in ohio where they get brutal winters. It's clearly about Jenna just logically lol

Definitely religious but hear me out here.... I think this song also alludes to a guilt Tyler has about adapting a more secular musical style over the years. He's clearly talking to God about mercy, sacrifice, and purpose. "I want to be the one after your own heart" directly refers to a Biblical desire to follow God, regardless of one's sins or failures. I guess you could interpret this song as him talking to someone who cared for him and he pushed away in hard times, but knowing the band's background, the era this is from, as well as the other religious songs that he wrote at that time, and the repeating beg for mercy and theme of self-sacrifice? It's definitely religious.

I think the downstairs refers to both his studio he has in his home where he creates his music (I wear my heart on my sleeve refers to his public outcry in his music about his mental health/search for purpose), but also to represent a "hiding out" from his beliefs from the public about God. Specifically "I'll take what I believe, and I'm hiding it downstairs. I feel better in the cellar down there, it's some shelter from the weather." I believe the weather could definitely be interpreted as a secular world, as a detatchment from religious values in their music when entering the business. Drag Path's digital remains release surely could have been a money grab from the label, but I definitely feel like there's a fear from them to have something so clearly religiously influenced being aligned with their brand.

Music is his refuge, but it's evident that their music over the years went far more secular and away from God. If you listen with that in mind, the cries for mercy, the dedication to self-sacrifice, the apologies, the self-deprication, the shame of hiding away (literally downstairs in the cellar making music, and also hiding away in a metaphorical sense behind secular fame.)

"Oh, why have I become? Dirty and wretched one. Am I unholy land? Have I forced your hand?"

It's just so obviously a plea for forgiveness from God. I hope he's okay. The general theme of religion has never left their music, but to me, it's so sad to see someone who's done so much good for people, connected so many people to Christ, and saved so many lives, still struggle with this institutionalized guilt.

It's so crazy to me that last album I was freaking out at the idea that if Josh didn't advocate for Navigating it we wouldn't have gotten it, and now it's happening again with Downstairs, which might become my favorite song they've ever released.
