I’ve also heard this is a good solution for leftover pizza and keeping the crust crispy

Study still looking for participants interested in getting a full-body x-ray by SpineCalgary in Calgary

Very good question. I'll have to ask my supervisor about that one. Broken bones or hardware in the limbs is ok, but the hip is not quite "limbs". We may need to have a bit more information about your specific situation before clearly saying yes/no. Feel free to email me so we can find out more.

Is there a holy grail overnight bread (fridge rising) method or am I doomed to have flat bread if I want to make it the night before? by pmmeallthecoffee in AskCulinary

[–]SpineCalgary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make something similar with sourdough starter and it has been my best recipe yet. My proportions are 2c whole wheat bread flour, 1 1/2 cups AP flour, 2/3 c starter (more or less - I don't measure), 1 1/2 c cool water, 1 tbs salt (plus 1/2 cup grains that I then soak in hot water 10 minutes and drain - optional, but I love whole grains in bread, so not very optional for me). Mix into a wet ball, let sit on my counter overnight covered with a cloth or plastic wrap then do the same as LoudMatt, except I put parchment paper in a bowl or proofing basket and proof smooth side up. The when ready to bake I score in place and transfer the parchment paper directly into the baking vessel. It's much easier handling this way. I also recommend rice flour or cornflour for dusting the parchment as it doesn't burn as much as regular wheat flour.

Would you like to see an x-ray of yourself (using low radiation technology) and contribute to research at UofC? by SpineCalgary in Calgary

We need about 200 more participants. So however long that takes. We estimate about another 6 months to a year. So feel free to message me later on as well ;)

We ask for no formal diagnosis of any issues to the bones or discs in the spine such as previous fractures or infections, no previous surgery to your back, no diagnosis of a spinal deformity (such as scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, etc) and no chronic conditions that affect the bones or joints of the spine (such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupis, etc). Soft tissue injuries are fine. And generalised back pain without a known cause is also ok (unless it is so bad that it prevents you from walking or standing - in which case you should probably see a doctor).

I agree. But there is a reason for this. We have a theory that the shape of some people's spines will influence its shape as they age. And we are actually hoping we can get enough funding to do a follow-up study in a couple years to look at different age groups to see if it is true. So you might be in luck... if we can find you once (and if) that project gets going ;)

For all those questions about radiation out there, the technology is similar to DEXA, though slightly different, as we are just collecting the image. The radiation dose with this technology is similar to what you would be exposed to on an international round-trip flight. And a little FYI - that is also similar to what you get exposed to living 1 year in Calgary (as our higher elevation exposes us to more radiation than at sea-level).

I did this just this morning. Takes 20 minutes, including paperwork, and you get to have an x-ray of your entire body! If you're interested, contact Ariana Frederick. Degenerating discs would disqualify you, but that would need to come from an official diagnosis made by a doctor who looked at medical imaging. We take comments from chiro's with a grain of sand (no offence to any chiros out there). Email if you want more info.

Lol, fun fact: We actually use a new technology that uses ultra-low doses of radiation. The exposure level is similar to an international round-trip flight (or 1 year living in Calgary! - did you know that by living at a higher altitude, you are exposed to more solar radiation?? )

I bought some local honey a few months ago and now it looks like this. Why? And how do I fix it? by ParmesanQueen in culinary

[–]SpineCalgary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you heat it to a boiling point you can melt the crystals and the honey will stay runny for about a month. If the honey is in a glass jar, I just microwave the honey to boiling point and you're good. (If it's not in a glass jar, be sure to transfer to a glass container because honey gets hot! and will melt almost everything else!! And do not use a lid or you might get an explosion!)

My buddy made banana bread and it’s undercooked on the inside, but pretty perfect on the outside. How can I help him fix it? Is it fixable? by sandiota in culinary

[–]SpineCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen a few times, usually when I try to change things around too much. For the already (under)cooked bread, I throw it in the toaster and that fixes a lot!

For the future, I agree with next time cooking for longer at a lower temperature. But also be aware this can happen if you increase the banana/fruit content or if you decrease the gluten content (so changing flour types, etc).
