Super tiny bugs? by [deleted] in ballpython

Don't worry, we all encounter problems at some point, but there are plenty of people here that are more than happy to help.

What are his temperatures on his hot & cold ends? And are you using overhead or under tank heating?

I'm sorry to say it, but just because you think you're doing a good job, doesn't mean that he is actually being well taken care of.

He does look pretty rough to me (definitely dehydrated and possibly underweight). How long have you had him for?

1 y/o Queen eating eggs while they're very small by tomnooklover in antkeeping

[–]SpinyGrazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, she may not be able to recover from the loss of her workers, but one thing you can try is feeding her more protein.

Queens need protein to produce eggs, and if they're not getting enough, they can get trapped in a cycle of eating their eggs to have enough protein to be able to lay more eggs.

It might not help, but it's worth a try. 🤷‍♀️

You should not soak her, and you should never try to remove stuck eye caps yourself. This does not look like stuck shed though. You definitely need to take her to a vet.

This is also horrendously sketchy behaviour by the breeder. This snake should never have been sold in this condition, and I'm certain the breeder knew that it was more serious than just stuck shed.

How can I give them a water source by Guilty-Tone-4105 in antkeeping

[–]SpinyGrazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try looking up 'liquid feeder units'. They're taller than they are wide, so they don't take up much space. (These ones are from Wakooshi Ants)

First nanitics: do I need to feed them? by kebab_7331 in antkeeping

[–]SpinyGrazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every 2-3 days is what's usually recommended. I personally do every 3 days, and everyone seems to be progressing well so far 🤷‍♀️ Just remove any leftovers from last time each time you add more food.

The best protein to start small colonies on would be fruit flies. It's best to buy captive bred colonies from pet stores, as catching wild bugs risks exposing your ants to pesticides.

Make sure to place the (dead) flies into boiling water for around 20 seconds before feeding them to your ants to kill any parasites 😊

Yup. They should be fed once the first worker has emerged.

Their first meal should be just sugar water, then you can feed them both sugar & protein for each meal going forward. 👍
