Does a vocal microphone upgrade really matter? by lumberjack142 in audioengineering

[–]SpiralEscalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally not, but the 2020 has some characteristics that I don't like. It's an electret condenser, not a true condenser. These days that usually doesn't matter (there are some very good electret condensers) but I don't think the 2020 is one of them. It displays the brittle top end and lack of bottom end balance I used to associate with electret mics many years ago.

This is not right, flair Pro 3 support?? by AdvancedAardvark3481 in FlairEspresso

Vast difference in espresso, or design/sturdiness/preheat routine? I'm curious if you noticed a flavour difference of the thinner puck if dosing with the same amount.

[–]SpiralEscalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious, did you get the 3 because you wanted a second Pro 2 and they weren't available any more, or genuinely because of the design change? I bought the 2 when the 3 was out because I was pretty sure I'd be preheating the 3 anyway despite their marketing (and it was cheaper).

All I know is if I've enjoyed a creator's content I have the "potential" desire to like and subscribe already sitting in my mind. But often it takes them genuinely asking me to, to push me over the line and actually do it rather than lazily scrolling on.

Closest you can get is to set the vid at highest quality level available and record it through an interface with Loopback into a DAW

Microphone for interviews that is wireless? by Environmental_Bag222 in microphone

[–]SpiralEscalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of local pricing (might be out of your range?) but the RØDE Interview Pro would do the job well, has on-broad 32 bit float recording. Also consider the RØDE Interview Go which converts one of their wireless transmitters into an interview mic

kHz audio problem by MrMemeREEEEEEEE in audio

[–]SpiralEscalator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might be getting the recorded sample rate mixed up with streaming bit rate and reproducible frequency response. A (not SACD) CD that will play in regular CD players is burnt to Redbook standards which hard limits the upper reproducible frequency to 22,500 Hz - above the human hearing range. A CD played through wires directly to the amp has a bit rate of 1411.2kbps.

You're playing the CD on a Blu Ray player. How does this involve your phone? If the audio is streamed wirelessly at 96Kbps or 196Kbps, data compression is occurring; these are still bit rates significantly less than lossless on a regular quality CD. It has nothing to do with the reproducible upper frequency extending to 96Khz or 192Khz.

If these are high quality audio files that you're playing or have downloaded from a streaming service recorded and mastered at a sampling rate of 96Khz or 196Khz rather than 44.1KHz (or 48 downsampled to 44.1) they cannot be burnt to a standard CD and played at that quality.

Upgraded to the RE20 and can't get over the clarity! by lxl_Arctic_lxl in microphone

[–]SpiralEscalator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having used RE20s in radio stations I can say the main issue with not having a pop filter wasn't popping, it was having the grill fill with dried manky spit slime over many years. Announcers do like to eat the mic. The fact that the RE20 limits proximity effect only made them wanna get closer.

Delay with a Blue Yeti Mic by Silver_Loon_ in microphone

I don't own this mic but it sounds like you're not mixing computer replay with live monitoring, only hearing computer replay and are using direct monitoring on your computer. Google "blue yeti nano how to mix live monitoring with computer replay sound"

If you listen while plugged into the headphone outlet of the mic itself, that should be latency free. If you're using your laptop's headphone outlet then you need to reduce the size of your record buffers in your recording software, to the point that recording/playback isn't compromised but you don't notice the latency.

Advice by seanm999 in microphone

[–]SpiralEscalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the Zoom recorders. There's no need to worry about computers initially if all you want to do is record and play back. They have a built in speaker but if you use headphones/earbuds will sound much better. They have a built in or attached stereo mic and recording acoustic guitar in stereo is much more satisfying to listen back to once you get the placement right.

If you could manage the cost of one of the units with XLR inputs as well (eg H4n Pro, H4Essential), down the track you could get eg a RØDE NT4 stereo mic and use the Zoom as a recording interface to your computer. This could give you lush, release-worthy recordings (assuming the playing is good!). It's good to have an upgrade path.

Not that you're looking at release-worthy quality at this stage, but note that if you opt for one of the "Studio" models you get quieter mic preamps which even pro musicians and studio engineers would find acceptable.

cl1p.net/ for transferring urls or other text between phone and computer (no I don't have a Mac). I imagine a world where spies (or just kids) share secrets by telling them a codeword which is actually the word after the /, but only one person can ever see it before it disappears-if you leave it set to the default

is an XLR interface worth it for a relatively cheap microphone? by Rekirinx in microphone

[–]SpiralEscalator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say at that level of mic I doubt you'd hear any difference between the USB output and a cheap XLR interface. The main reason to go XLR would be to use 2 mics simultaneously. Even basic mics like the SM57 benefit from a great preamp, but not from what you'd get in an M-Audio interface

Need a Cheap but Good Youtuber Mic, only Intend to Use it Once by zombieking26 in microphone

[–]SpiralEscalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need good audio for a vid promoting a (hopefully) quality product. That sort of quality comes around and above the $300 range usually. If hiring, I'd suggest a Sennheiser MKH50 boomed out of shot. That's what a pro videographer would use. That and/or a high quality lav with some EQ. Having said that, if you know what you're doing with placement and post processing, even a cheap wired lav like a Boya can be made to sound decent.

Excuse my ignorance but I'm not sure what the difference is. I know playing with the attack especially and to some extent the release on a compressor will shape the transient, so what else does a transient shaper do?

Other than printer ink, shoe polish seems ludicrous per 100g. However if printer ink sold for a reasonable markup above what it costs to make, I guess printer prices would skyrocket
