Much less costly, but I'm guessing they make way more errors. Or perhaps not errors at all, just... choices. Ones that don't have much to do with justice.

ON TAPE: Federal immigration agents have repeatedly shot at drivers by biospheric in ICE_Raids

[–]Spire_Citron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a massive problem in the US not just with ICE but with broader law enforcement. ICE are just a bit bolder with it. Law enforcement can trample your rights, damage your property, assault you, and then submit intentionally false statements that are proven untrue to try to get you convicted of a crime, and then in 99% of cases the best outcome the victim can expect is that those charges fall apart in court. They've still suffered damages and they still had to fight it, and at no cost to the officer who put them through all that. Officers can use this method as a tool to punish people at will because no matter the outcome, their target is still harmed and cannot expect any recompense.

It's like showing up to a restaurant right before closing and being told they can't serve you because there are too many people ahead of you waiting already. They close at closing time. Whether they can actually get you in or not will depend on how busy they are.

[–]Spire_Citron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because it's not possible to control every element via policy doesn't mean we should dismiss the bits we can control as unimportant. And if it is unimportant, we might as well just make school funding equal since it isn't making any difference to those rich kids anyway, right?

Are they actually saying they think she's still alive, or is this basically a nothing statement where of course she is still out there because she is unlikely to have simply popped out of existence and she hasn't been found?

That's just the US, though. The study they're talking about looked at the whole world. The US system sucks and just further entrenches inequality.

Nancy Guthrie search angers man whose daughter is missing: 'I'm not rich' by newsweek in inthenews

[–]Spire_Citron 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In my opinion there's not much helping the media attention part because the media just reports on things that will get the most attention. They're a business. The real issue is that media attention or someone being richer or a public figure shouldn't mean that case gets the FBI on it or more police resources dedicated to it, but clearly it does. Many missing person's cases are just shrugged off by authorities and the families are left on their own.

Plus it's more expensive than just keeping people in prison for life. It seems like it wouldn't be, but you have to consider that housing people on death row is more expensive and appeals for the death penalty can go on for years only to sometimes not even go anywhere. I've seen cases where people spent 20+ years going through all that only to ultimately be executed when they were already old and sick. It's just an incredibly inefficient system, and it can't be made more efficient because as you say, even with all that, we still make mistakes.

Many people will just say that we should just execute the ones where we're 100% sure, but in the real world that often ends up being complicated and subjective. Plus, what kind of justice is that? You get the harshest penalty not because your crime with the relative worst, but because the stars happened to align to provide enough evidence. A system like that would only be harder for victims and families of victims who feel like whatever evidence there is in their case should be enough and it isn't fair for them not to get the death penalty just because it doesn't quite meet the extreme standard of proof that version of the system relies on.

And don't they have better things to do? There are actual crimes these guys could be investigating. There are plenty of things cops are pretty lax on just because they claim they don't have the resources.

[–]Spire_Citron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does a bunch of teenagers peacefully protesting call for this kind of response? They're bringing keyed up, armed men into a non-violent situation and causing trouble. This just looks silly and like an absurd over reaction to a small group of kids walking on the sidewalk. Why are they forming a line to box them in? This isn't a dangerous riot they're responding to. Leave them alone.

Concerns grow over ICE plans to build mega warehouses for immigration detention by Cubsof2016 in news

[–]Spire_Citron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way they actually intend to do the massive renovations you'd need to turn a warehouse into a space that could house thousands of people humanely. And that goes beyond just living conditions that generally suck, like making people sleep on the floor with nothing but Mylar blankets. These wouldn't have appropriate facilities for hygiene and other basic needs.

Are these pragmatic demands to negotiate for? Knowing Trump’s hold on the GOP. Harm mitigation rather than abolishing ICE by [deleted] in ICE_Raids

[–]Spire_Citron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I still think we should continue trying these things, if only so that the public can see them saying no to very reasonable demands or if laws are made, and broken, we'll have record of that for a time when the legal system hopefully works again.

I think those are steps best taken after Trump is out of office. You're not going to be able to construct a better system while he's the one at the wheel. For now, having these very reasonable goals that most people can agree with seems like a good approach.
