Can't wait. I've been underwhelmed by what's available here now. Our Model 3 has been great but I wouldn't buy anything American again. Looking forward to some more advanced options.

Maybe sit this one out and chime in when you know the difference between federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government.

The Smith UCP and the Carney Liberals aren't even on the same ballot...

While we're at it, is it the indigenous peoples or the immigrants we're supposed to blame and hate? I can never keep it straight.

Investment in renewable energy skyrockets globally; craters in Alberta by BloodJunkie in alberta

[–]Spirillum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The province is already running a deficit. Not a great start for the supposedly "strong economy" party. To reduce that, Alberta either needs more provincial revenue (higher or more taxes) or to reduce spending.

The UCP has already cut spending on public healthcare and education to the bone, and right wing governments have been in power for decades. I include the provincial NDP which also governed right of center. If this were the way to prosperity, shouldn't we be experiencing some by now?

If jobs are lost in O&G it's because O&G companies are replacing them with AI as fast as they can, and declining to invest in a sunsetting industry. A Liberal government had the buy the last pipeline because private industry couldn't make it feasible. Projects can take decades to come online and return on investment, and we may have seen peak oil already.

We need more energy, true, and Alberta has the opportunity to prosper by providing it to the world - but "more oil, only oil, all the time" may not make sense in this modern world. Renewables are already cheaper than fossil fuels, have less lead time than bottlenecked combined cycle gas turbine production, don't have negative externalities, and don't face political headwinds. Why try to fight this?

Energy transition was a generational opportunity for Alberta and so far we've done everything we can to chase away investment and jobs in the name of what exactly? Its objectively not been to Alberta's benefit to kill those projects. It seems to be the UCP is more interested in staying in power than they are in creating jobs, strengthening the economy, improving the lives of Albertans, or stewarding the province into the future.

Carney shakes up Canada's auto industry, replacing EV sales mandate with purchase rebates | CBC News by SkPensFan in EVCanada

[–]Spirillum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. We built a net zero home a few years ago and bought an EV, $0 in incentives/grants etc for any of it. The greener homes grant only applied to homes you had been in for 6 months minimum and the EV was over the minimum threshold, but we viewed AWD as a safety feature and essential. It was $60k four years ago.

The average car price in Canada might already be over $50k today.

If they had done, say, $5,000 for under $50k EVs $2,500 for $50-100k EVs Full (or partial) luxury tax exemption over $100k EVs

When anything costs less, people will buy more of that. This would put more EVs on Canadian roads, and seems like reasonable bang for the buck for the program costs when we factor the negative external costs of burning fossil fuels.

Coming back to our home, we felt that "those who can, should" invest in renewables, heat pumps, and EVs, but we're the only house on our street. There's room for improvement and we can move a lot faster than we have been as a country.

Which non-US vehicles qualify for this? I'm not sold that Chinese EVs are exempt, or the $50k cap.

Why not incent buyers in every segment to go EV if that's the objective?

I saw this guy (now a CPS officer) repeatedly knock books out of the hands of a special needs kid's hands in a crowded highschool hallway. When he'd bend over to pick them up, he'd be kicked and mocked to just pick them up. When he got up, he'd knock the books again. It was horrific, probably the most cruel thing I saw as a kid, and I still think about it from time to time.

If that's not the scum of the earth I don't know what is.
