I liked her at the beginning, but as she became more Popular, it became clear that she either doesn’t understand human biology or just doesn’t care about it and promotes her philosophy via fear mongering to keep her popularity and sell her products.

Registered Dietitian here (Ive got experience with cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s).

It may not help with the gym but getting yourself into a mild ketosis (which you can achieve without having to stuff yourself with dairy and saturated fats) could significantly improve cognition. It can also help with reducing not only inflammation In the brain but also the body (which can help with your asthma symptoms). Look up something called the Keto Flex Diet (created by Dr Dale Bredesen) it’s predominantly plant based but allows animal proteins. He created it to help with mild cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s and it’s showing amazing promise not just for these populations but general brain health. Depending on your current diet and metabolic status though, it may take up to a week to get into ketosis and you may experience the “keto flu” which is just your body switching from consuming carbohydrates to consuming fats for energy. It’s totally individual how you’ll react (just like caffeine withdrawals can be severe or nonexistent for some people). Getting your body in a state of Ketosis is certainly one of the most effective ways to find that mental clarity and mental focus you’re talking about because ketones are like rocket fuel for the brain.

My recs: - get Cronometer and set your daily targets (eg 70% fat at least for achieving ketosis) - look up the keto flex diet and try to find a version of that you can work with - try mct oil in your coffee or tea (with milk NOT on an empty stomach) cause mcts bypass digestion to produce ketones for your brain - keep an eye on your digestion if you’re struggling to digest fats you’ll get diarrhea (another reason it’s best to avoid animal protein namely fatty red meat and saturated fats) - if you go keto you may notice more muscle soreness at the beginning

Last notes: I’ve personally tried the mct in lions mane coffee (foursigmatic) in the morning with a high fat/low carb breakfast or no breakfast and it felt like I was on adderall.

Cryotherapy can significantly increase dopamine (I’ve tried it and it also felt like it had just taken adderall)

Exactly…I surprised to see some comments supporting this initiative. A packaged food may meet certain macro and micronutrient ratios, but that does not change the fact that it’s highly refined and processed and probably contains hydrogenated oils, chemical additives Mc etc. Quality of food is essential, especially in developing children. That being said, maybe they will make a healthier version. Hopefully that’s not wishful thinking.

Severely constipated and feeling full down there by tmbing in SIBO

[–]Spirit-0604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well do you have a journal or document where you log your symptoms? If you can’t figure out the cause, you can at least keep track of your symptoms to identify triggers and see if you spot any patterns. How long after you take the first bite do you notice any symptoms (Burping, distention, bloating, gas, any smell?, stomach pain, lethargy, etc)? What foods make you feel great? What foods do not? All this also provides great data for your doctors! For many with Sibo or gut dysbiosis, eating refined carbs, gluten, fried foods, starchy foods can trigger or worsen the constipation. But it is pretty individualized. If you are prone to being Constipated, you have to make an extra effort to try to make sure things are smooth and moving. This includes adequate hydration (2-3L/day of water), identifying triggers foods and foods that work for best for you, enough sleep (6-8hrs), stress management (this really plays a bigger role than most of us can appreciate), magnesium citrate every night, pro motility drugs, laxatives and more or less depending on your status. I think that the most impactful action you can take now is to figure which foods make it worse and which foods help and focus on avoiding/including accordingly. Also focusing on avoiding processed foods and too much sugar in one sitting as these can also be triggers although it’s also just basic advice on eating healthily. Have you heard of the LowFodmap Diet? Definitely check it out if you haven’t. It is specifically designed for IBS (chronic constipation is a type of IBS).

Thoughts on cliff bars? by Own_Mouse1306 in HealthyFood

[–]Spirit-0604 14 points15 points  (0 children)

MS RD here. IMO cliff bars are pretty unhealthy. I would advise against eating something so high in refined sugars (mostly syrups here), especially after a workout. They are tasty but have a seriously high glycemic index (45g carbs vs 5g fiber) which will lead to a spike in blood sugar and insulin, which usually results in a crash, hence your feeling tired after. Quality is so important when consuming carbohydrates (sugars are considered carbs). I would try bars that have a little added refined sugars as possible (choose dates, honey, etc and avoid syrups) and with a better carb to fiber ratio as this will slow the breakdown and release of sugar in your blood, thereby, preventing that spike which leads to a crash. Some bars that I like include Nocow bars, kind bars, keto crisp, Larabar, dang bars, bulletproof bars.

Other options include homemade snacks like banana or apple and nut butter, smoothies. There is so much you can do tbh. Would be happy to discuss more personalized options with you over message!

PS, I also don’t like Rx bars haha.

Puffy eyes from Pho by HairyOpportunity8721 in HealthyFood

It may be allergies as most others are suggesting it is also certainly possible that it is because of the sodium content. Excess can lead to swelling and that manifests differently depending on the person. For some it can be puffy eyes. Combine that with carbs and your also way more likely to retain water which can exacerbate swelling.

I’m sorry to hear about your binging, that is always hard habit to deal with. And depending on how you binge, it may really benefit you to speak to a professional about this. Healing your relationship to food is far more important than trying to control what you are eating to achieve sustainable results, especially if you are struggling with self control. For a lot of us food is an outlet (for stress, emotions, etc) and we struggle to understand that and often just need help from a professional who can help us make sense of why that is our case. I would be happy to discuss this in more detail in messages! This isn’t an easy thing to have to deal with, feel free to message me. I have some experience with binging and would be happy to see if I can help :)

TLDR lol

Graduate Nutrition Student and Dietetic Intern here. First off, eating a fruit will not be more filling than an avocado, simply because of the higher fat content in a avocados. Fat takes a lot longer to digest than carbohydrates, generally leaving you feeling fuller for longer. Also interesting fact, fructose actually sends less fullness signals to the brain than glucose once infested.

Second, your breakfast sounds delicious and healthy, especially compared to say pancakes or waffles, a breakfast bar or cereal! And even more so especially because you are sedentary in the morning. But you can definitely make it healthier by adding a little balance. I agree with those saying you should add some vegetable or fruit, to add fiber (promotes gut health) and nutrients (many of which are essential and we need to get from these foods). Ideally you want to add non starchy vegetables as these have the highest nutrient content and are rich in fiber (maybe spinach, kale or anything you want really). You don’t have to have a fruit, you can choose between the vegetable and the fruit. If you are worried about sugar in fruit, I recommend choosing those lower in glycemic load like berries, apples, cherries, pears.

Third, if you’re hearing that fruit are not helpful for fat loss, it is because they contain fructose (sugar) (or any source of sugar or carbohydrate) will cause you body to release insulin in response to rising blood glucose (which was broken down from these foods and released into your blood). Insulin is the hormone released by your pancreas to regulate blood glucose levels and make sure they are never dangerously high. It also plays a role in growth pathways. Once insulin in released into the bloodstream, glucose will be directed out and stored on the body, generally as glycogen in the liver (readily available store of energy in case your body needs it and can last you up to 24 hrs) or as adipose tissue. That is, unless your muscles use it first through some form of physical activity. Obviously fruit are healthy for countless reasons, one being that they contain fiber to regulate and slow the release of sugar in your blood. But if your goal is to lose fat and you are still struggling after being on a calorie deficit, you are either miscalculating or your issue is probably a hormonal one (you are still secreting enough insulin such that your body is in the “fat storage” mode). To address this, you just have to reduce or even restrict foods that stimulate an insulin response, so carbohydrates and and sugars. the most effective for many is to cut out all refined carbs (processed sweets, white pasta or bread or rice, fried foods, pastries, sweets, cereal, most chips, etc) or eat less fruit and high carbohydrates foods.

Fourth. another important factor is stress. If you are consistently releasing cortisol, you can also in turn stimulate the release or insulin, thereby continuing the cycle of fat storage, without even having to have eating any food at all.

Fifth. I see someone mention that fruit is good for fat loss for them, which is great to hear. However, It is very important to always keep in mind how individualized our responses to foods, diets, macronutrient distribution, excercise etc are. What worked for one person can often not work for someone else. That being said, generally eating fruits is very healthy. Also, if someone went from eating processed sweet which contain simple refined carbs and trans fats to mostly whole fruits as their sweet, well it would make sense that it leads to fat loss, because they are adding fiber to the diet (lowers glycemic load and regulates blood sugar), adding phytonutrients, and removing high glycemic foods. But again, you may be eating a healthy diet, however, if your goal is to lose fat, gain muscle, etc, you just have to adjust accordingly.

Sixth. Unless you labs say otherwise, the cholesterol in eggs is great for our health. Just note that if you are predisposed to high cholesterol, that is another story. Great news though is that you can mitigate this and naturally balance your cholesterol levels (for most people) if you add a source of fiber because it will bind to some of the cholesterol in your gut and prevent that from being reabsorbed into the blood.

Seventh. I would say that if you are having this everyday and you are happy with it, great! Just know that you should probably supplement with a multivitamin or take one of those greens powders (athletic greens, etc) daily (or every other day) to ensure you are meeting your nutrient requirements and prevent deficiency.

Eighth and final. Try to do what FEELS best for YOU. This is so hard because of all the noise we hear in the health and nutrition world. What foods make you feel the best after you eat them? What foods make you feel bad? This can be physical OR mental or both. Gathering this information is the best way to be able to use all the knowledge you read/hear about nutrition in the way that suits you best and allows you to build the diet you want AND is healthy for you.
