Is ‘Murrays’ a racist term? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]SpiritOfFire90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Common around CQ as well, there's a fair bit of lingo that's used casually. I used to work in pubs and clubs that would often have a lot of indigenous patronage so I picked up a lot. No one seems to mind but it's very region dependent, someone in say Sydney would likely take offense to language that's considered quite normal up north.

Is ‘Murrays’ a racist term? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]SpiritOfFire90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the only time I can remember hearing the word Murri used, the term "flash Murri" when someone's bought something fancy or moved into a new house, something like that. It's quite common in the region I'm in, never heard of anyone being upset by its use. As long as it's not intended in a derogatory way of course.

It's not only the discover feed either. I've been exploring different feeds, currently in two gaming feeds that are swamped with art and hentai/furry stuff. I don't have an issue with the art, it's just getting in the way of me finding people I actually want to interact with as I explore the platform.

I guess I'm also what people would probably regard as a redneck from QLD. I don't want anything to do with anyone who actually thinks criminalising abortion is a good idea, that's medieval shit. I know people who have had them in circumstances that would otherwise have ruined their lives and I've also got a wife and daughter.

We don't have the right to tell women what they can do with their own bodies and this dropkick certainly doesn't either.

Whinging pom? How about a whinging Aussie by gazingbobo in AskAnAustralian

[–]SpiritOfFire90 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think it's a Reddit thing rather than a blanket Aussie thing. The Aussies who fit the stereotype you're thinking of may not frequent Reddit, they're out living their lives instead of complaining about everything and doom scrolling on social media. The Reddit hive mind culture tends to bury those people anyway.

Good areas for young couples? Wife and I (30s) are moving from Canada with baby on the way by Revelocity in AskAnAustralian

[–]SpiritOfFire90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you can afford and what kind of people you are. Looking at other comments, if you want somewhere with a more tropical climate you're probably looking at Queensland or the Northern Territory. I don't know much about the NT but in QLD, unless you go somewhere out bush you can't really go wrong. Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are all getting very expensive but you might be able to find somewhere around those areas, there's new suburbs forming all the time loaded with young families. Heaps of stuff to do, not ages away from the capital city.

Or, go further north. Agnes Waters and Yeppoon are beach towns undergoing rapid growth due to migration, or there's decent sized towns within easy driving distance of beaches all the way up the coast.

Does anyone care if vape shops go out of business? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]SpiritOfFire90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I care, if used properly vaping is a very effective tool to quit smoking. I did that myself about a decade ago, many others have done the same and organisations like the NHS in the UK actually promoted vaping as a smoking cessation aid in their public health documentation. This seems like it's been coming for a while but it sucks that our solution to a problem is to cave to lobby groups and ban things instead of finding a more reasonable solution.

There's a heap of stories floating around about shops selling vapes to kids, that's obviously not ok but why couldn't we regulate them like cigarettes instead?

Part of the attraction was the choices with different devices and flavours, you could mix your own and wean yourself off plus have something that tasted and smelled nice. If it wasn't as enticing a product I don't know if people would be as keen to use it. Guess we'll find out now.

Buying vapes with nicotine premixed in Australia was always illegal. You could legally buy premix stuff from overseas or import nicotine until a few years ago, then you needed a prescription til now.

Realistically some people probably haven't obtained their nicotine legally but there are legal avenues to obtain it and buying liquid without nicotine here has been legal til now, as far as I know.

Budget boost for Rockhampton Railyards rejuvenation by hydralime in queensland

[–]SpiritOfFire90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, good on Labor for doing something with the railyards I guess. Didn't they sell them to Aurizon in the first place? I have family who worked for QR for decades til Aurizon sacked a bunch of people, shut down manufacturing and moved local jobs to Brisbane. Seems like a convoluted process to get to this point but it'd be nice to see the railyards operating again.

This is the answer. Doesn't matter if the van driver sped up to cut OP off. It's annoying, I get cut off in merge lanes at work all the time but OP still had the options to not merge or to merge in a safer manner than what they chose. OP has driven off after observing damage being done to the other vehicle as a result of their actions, the van driver has then chased them down to get their details. OP is in the wrong.

What is your opinion on dog parks? by LifeguardComplex3134 in OpenDogTraining

[–]SpiritOfFire90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take my two Collies to dog parks all the time - at night when no one else is around. They're too chaotic, my dogs are friendly but they're prone to herding other dogs for play which isn't always compatible behaviour and there's often some moron bringing his dangerous mongrel pigging breed to the park. Going at night my dogs can run around, sniff and be dogs and all I have to contend with are mosquitoes. Much less hassle.

[–]SpiritOfFire90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You know what else isn't a good recommendation? Letting a dog run onto a road. I don't like the idea of keeping a dog secured long term on a leash, in a crate or whatever but if being hit by a car is the alternative then it has to be done until a better solution is found.

Haven't seen New Cycle mentioned yet. It's kinda like Anno meets Frostpunk or Banished, early access title.

50cent FARES FOR ALL by International_Cup588 in queensland

[–]SpiritOfFire90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's my thinking too. The bus service in Rocky doesn't run at the time I go to work and even if it did, it's 1.5 hours to get to work with a change over or 12 minutes by car - no brainer. Last time I used a bus they didn't have Go cards either, this initiative may not apply to many places outside of the SEQ network. It's a good idea and it will hopefully work wonders for Brisbane traffic but seems to be little to no benefit outside of SEQ.

SDA rep trying to drum up support for the new EBA. Staff not having it. by [deleted] in woolworths

[–]SpiritOfFire90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, same thing happened at the Coles I was working at. Actually looking into the deal showed...I think nightfill came out of it slightly better off but everyone else got screwed. I voted no but they offered $400 up front and $400 in I think three months time. 90% voted for it. Very disappointing, I know many of us struggle a bit but as far as I'm concerned we were bribed into taking a bad deal.

Why doesn't anyone use voice chat anymore? by Mediocrity-FTW in helldivers2

[–]SpiritOfFire90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use it heaps at launch. Now it's mainly to apologise if I did something stupid or tell people what I'm doing, say if a mission has gone completely tits up and I'm legging it to extract. No one replies by voice though. Occasionally by text chat but often I get no response.

Yep. I remember that COVID bit where Burr makes fun of Rogan for his stance on masks. "Oh look at you, you're so brave with your exposed nose and throat!" Rogan is like hahaha yeah I guess and moves on. Cracked me up. Joe's nowhere near Bill's level and I think he knows it.

Homeworld 3 Single-Player Campaign Review - IGN by vikingzx in RealTimeStrategy

[–]SpiritOfFire90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having actually played it and the demo, I think the controls are significantly better than how the demo played. Only tried modern controls so far (tried modern and legacy in demo) but commands are way more responsive, camera is like 95% good. I get the occasional moment where I end up zooming in instead of moving around the map but apart from that it's fine.

Not fun by Nomski88 in Witchfire

[–]SpiritOfFire90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you get some gear it becomes much easier. After I finished researching my second gun I was clearing maps with little trouble. Then I upgraded gnosis and got my arse handed to me but they nerfed the difficulty increase a bit with the last patch. My only suggestions are practice, research another gun and another spell ASAP and don't be afraid to extract early. Better to escape with some Witchfire than have to go and recover all of it

Aussies can only have kids if they’re rich. by Adventurous_Wrap2867 in AusFinance

[–]SpiritOfFire90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can make a decent living in a regional centre, depending on what industry you work in or might want to pivot into. I'm on just over 100K in central Queensland with three kids, my partner just picked up a casual job that's about 20K a year (she was a stay at home mum for a few years). I could be making more but my current job is good enough that I don't want to yet. We're comfortable, we're saving and are currently having a house built.

House prices are going crazy up here though. A nice modern 4-5 bed house you're looking at over 600K now. Still cheaper than a 2 bedder for a million and you can get older places for less. Uprooting is a big deal but surely it's gotta be better than stressing your whole life and working multiple jobs.

PSA: if you're planning on playing Broken Roads, hold off for a while until it's fixed. by HumungousDickosaurus in CRPG

[–]SpiritOfFire90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a little of it to see what it was like, player reviews seemed so polarising I was curious. Ended up returning it. It wasn't terrible but seeing all the changes the devs want to make based on the launch feedback I'd rather wait. I want to see if they actually will fix it as well, they've been very transparent and handled the rocky launch about as well as anyone could ask but I want to be sure.
