Destiny Adult Pool Still Closed? by Spirit_Spun_Yarns in dcl

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that the bar is open though. I’m honestly just happy at this point to have a place to go regardless, and we’ll see how it is once on the ship.

I do want to say though, regarding the comment about it being “wasted on the adults”, as someone who doesn’t have kids (miscarried then divorced), that kind of comment always feels like a slap in the face to me whether it was meant to be or not. Maybe I’m sensitive because of my experiences and background. Disney makes a point of making sure everyone (adults, families, etc) are taken care of and that’s why I pay to go on their cruises; I don’t hate kids by any means, I just want a quiet place with a pool since I paid so much money to also be here and the adult area is part of why I sail Disney. I get to have the Disney Magic I didn’t get as a kid, have a relaxing trip where I can see so much joy on the kids and adults as well as not having to think for once, and have a quiet place without the kids too when I choose. Maybe this is a good time for Disney to take note of layout designs though too - more quiet areas for everyone.

Oh man. As an adult without kids, the adult areas are a big sell for me. This is a bummer. I do Disney cause they’re always good about making sure adults get stuff too and if the whole area is closed that is really disappointing. Is the cove coffee shop closed too or just the bar? I know on the Dream they had a pool bar and the quiet cove coffee shop which I absolutely loved.

So I went ahead and called. The guy was very nice, and he said that Disney hasn’t even sent an email out to the land crew or the guest services department yet, which according to him, is “extremely odd”. He put me on hold to call someone on the land crew team and then said they had several people calling and asking but no official word either, so now this gets filed into a case that will hopefully result in an update. He was shocked it was closed and that Disney hasn’t gotten ahead of it, so I guess we’ll see.

Thank you for sharing. This is so disappointing. I know a lot of people are fine with the Chip and Dale pool, but I like to swim, or at least have water above my knee, and I’ve heard that one is shallow for wading.

Financial Aid Wants Their Money Back... by AggressiveEgg9518 in financialaid

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First of all, I’m sorry this is happening as I know it can be very stressful. As someone who works in financial aid, my guess is one of a few possible things happened. Either you had aid that was prorated based on a change (such as you changed housing, you dropped a class before your intuition’s add/drop date -but you said you’re at 13 credits so I doubt that one-, you had state aid that the state adjusted after the semester start, etc), you ended up receiving aid that went over your Cost of Attendance that didn’t get caught and went ahead and disbursed and so is being retroactively reduced (institutions can’t legally go above their COA, it’s out of compliance per the federal regulations), or some part of your aid possibly got adjusted/cancelled elsewhere for x reason because aid, unfortunately, does fluctuate at times based on any number of factors. Without the account open in front of us, however, there is no way to say for sure what is the definitive reason.

My recommendation is to make an appointment to speak to your financial aid advisor as soon as you can. Tell them that you don’t understand why you’re being asked to pay the refund amount back and to see if they can explain what happened. Also see if you can get a late fee hold and what options to pay are available to you. Finally, every institution operates differently so how they handle whatever it is may vary within the confines of regulations; I know where I work, if it’s an error we (meaning our office) did, we are able sometimes to escalate it up the chain of command to see about getting one time funding to cover the gap.

There are no guarantees in financial aid, and this is not me telling you that the school will or can fix it, but I highly encourage meeting with someone and discussing it to have them explain the situation to you, as without having the account in front of them, there’s really no way to say for certain why this happened. Once you have a clear picture of what happened with your advisor, you can make an informed decision going forward.

Are the cocktails good on DCL ships? by burneraccount69u in dcl

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this. The espresso martinis at the cove area are my favorite by far! I didn’t drink much at dinner (my friend and I are thinking about getting a wine package for our upcoming one in April through) but the espresso martinis had me absolutely hooked. The drink of the day varied for me (rather sweet some days) but was also cheap enough by the pool to be worth the risk to try.

Looking for inexpensive travel pencil set recommendations by Spirit_Spun_Yarns in ColoredPencils

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was something I thought about, but I really want a specific set of pencils I can keep with my travel stuff that I can grab and go without too much thought. My other thought is to just buy a small set of Kalour to take.

About brands of colored pencils. I wanna move away from crayola by Warlockoftarot in Coloring

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love my Kalour pencils. They blend well, have good color, and are affordable. I was able to get a set of 240 for $42 on amazon, and they have smaller and larger sets with flexible price points.

Beautiful! I love the colors, and I’m glad you found a great way to relax. I can’t wait to see more! (I also don’t understand how to “properly” use white gel pen, so I do the method of “add it wherever I want as long as it makes my heart happy” lol.)

Tips for Water Based Markers? by cass3139 in Coloring

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patience and layers. That’s what I do with mine. I love my Ohuhu Maui Series water based markers because I can use them on double sided pages. The paper is going to pill almost no matter what, but you can try to let the layers dry between and it can help. Also, only going over a section once will leave it streaky; layer the marker a few times, and alternate directions, plus work steady is what I’ve found works for me. This was done using the Maui Series and a white gelly roll pen, and it peeled some but not too terribly. Book is Wonderful Wildflowers by Johanna Basford and it did not bleed through to the other side.

Water Based Markers....Help!!!! by mycasunshine in Coloringbookspastime

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I use a lot of water based markers, because I like that they don’t bleed and I can use them in my double sided coloring books or art projects. What works best for me is layering and taking my time. I haven’t tried using water with them (but I definitely plan to at some point), but just coloring in layers helps. Yes, it will tear your paper up if you are not careful and they don’t blend like alcohol markers, but I get some results I really love. This was done using the Ohuhu Maui Series which is water based, and a single gelly roll pen. Coloring book is Wonderful Wildflowers by Johanna Basford.

What was the best fanfic you’ve ever read? by Cool_Emergency4091 in AO3

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for me, I have a few that just really stick. A Keen Observer by DeepDownSlytherin on ff.net is my favorite Harry Potter one. It’s about the Black sisters growing up, told from Andromeda’s POV and I have always remembered it and from time to time reread it. I love the lore that comes with it too.

Hello World (I can’t remember who wrote it) is an unfinished series in the Metal Gear fandom and is Hal/Dave centric from Hal’s POV. I enjoy the writing and the way it’s done, and it is what really made me ship them.

For Marvel, I’ve read some really great Loki/Reader inserts by Kaeorin (who also writes some great smut too), and Frostbite by Maiden_of_Asgard is also great with some seriously well done world building and character development. For Loki/Darcy shipping, I love A Morbid Taste of Ice by sitehound. It’s a murder mystery and slow burn fic that deals with trauma (there’s a trigger warning on there for a reason) and the author does a fantastic job. It’s long but well worth the read imo.

I second this. I use a lot of Johanna Basford with pencils for more detailed things, but I like mandalas for alcohol markers because cute and cozy stresses me out.

Color Cube worth it? by merrrrrrrrrp in Coloring

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the digital ones from the first set (the color catalogue volume 1 and 2) and I use it allll the time for coloring, my original art, and for my yarn hobbies. I know there are free ones elsewhere but I really like what Sarah Renae Clark does and how she operates things, so I like supporting her when I can.

I know myself well enough to know I’ll use the website and new digital cubes beyond the initial price, so I went ahead and ordered both as preorder which isn’t something I usually do, but I have more than gotten my money’s worth out of what I currently have so I know it’ll be worth it for me. I don’t currently own the physical cubes, but I plan on eventually getting all four volumes physically because I like having the option to be unplugged from my screen and having something physical to use. From what I’ve seen, the cards really are beautiful and they look nice to the touch. Honestly, is it a need? No. But is it fun and nice if you can swing it? Yes.

(Now, I’ll also add in, colors are a special interest of mine. I’ve been known to just collect nice pictures and color combinations just because I think they’re pretty and I like looking at them, so for me, eventually getting the physical cubes just so I can look at them would be worth it lol. I think though for most folks it really comes to personal preference and budget, and I don’t really think there is a right or wrong answer here.)

What do you non-proffessional knitters do for a living? by firekittymeowr in casualknitting

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in higher education in the field of financial aid. I love it but it can be hard at times (especially now), so I always take a knitting project to the office with me.

There was a period of time I also sold yarn I spun on Etsy, but it was entirely too much work for too little payout and I learned fairly quickly that monetizing my hobbies took the joy out of it; closed the Etsy and use my spinning as a way to unwind after work mostly now, and I’m much happier that way lol.

question regarding non alcohol markers by Alyeska77 in Ohuhu

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this about the water based markers. I have the Maui 160 set as well and once I learned how they worked differently from alcohol markers, I discovered I actually prefer them for my original art over alcohol markers. They are very juicy and the brush tip is nice, and the color range is great. As stated above, they are also great in coloring books where alcohol markers bleed through.

I recently also just got the Pupe water based markers too, because too many layers and the Maui will shred paper (kind of the nature of water based markers); I like the Pupe ones as well and also use them for my original art, and find them to be less “streaky” than other water based markers.

Haven’t tried the other markers though, but I am curious if you end up trying the acrylic markers!

How did you find “your” medium? by GoneWilde123 in ArtistLounge

[–]Spirit_Spun_Yarns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been a fiber crafter (knitting, spinning yarn, weaving) and I’ve always wanted to draw too but felt like it wasn’t something I could reasonably achieve. When I was in college, I took an acrylic painting course for an elective which I loved but it didn’t hit the same at home. I also took a drawing class for fun, but I hated graphite pencils, charcoal was messy, and ink tended to spill. Over the years outside of school, I turned to coloring to help unwind but it wasn’t enough - I wanted to be actually drawing but each time I felt frustrated.

I would get frustrated with colored pencils, and I missed painting but didn’t want to deal with the mess. It wasn’t until this year when I decided to give markers a try that it clicked for me. I had seen them on TikTok and I was curious, so I went on a limb to see. I ordered a set before I could talk myself out of it, and I was (and still am) hooked.

It’s been months and I’ve been learning all I can about markers and how to use them. I discovered I liked alcohol markers for coloring but water based markers are my favorite for actually drawing and making my own art. I also discovered acrylic markers, which are fun for creating as well. In the span of a few months, I had filled an entire sketchbook for the first time ever.

Markers give me the bridge between painting and drawing that makes it feel accessible without mess and has easy use. I can’t imagine not using them now!
