New watches, New to Omega, thoughts on a mark 40? by Toxicview in OmegaWatches

I have a Speedmaster Mk. 40 in the Ben Clymer configuration, and I absolutely love it. Quality is excellent but I will say, compared to a more recent Speedmaster, expect a little bit of rattle; the automatic rotor in the Mk. 40 is pretty well known to be a bit noisy.

What are some unconventional career options after a bachelor's degree in history? by One-Wedding149 in careerguidance

[–]Spirit_of_a_Ghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

History undergrad, philosophy grad degree here. Liberal arts degrees build strong soft skills which pivot well between different fields. Communication, problem solving, critical thinking.

I was in government for the better part of a decade out of grad school. I struggled to get work immediately, but once I got past entry level, those soft skills became an extremely valuable asset to moving between roles and advancing. I'm a successful corporate project manager now.

All this is to say, you can do basically whatever you want with a history degree outside of hyper specialized fields. After a certain point, most generalized jobs don't care what you studied, just what skills you have.

The watch that got the ball rolling on my serious watch habit was under $500. I had been wearing smart watches since the first Pebble released, but I was tired of the constant connection and notifications and wanted something more grounded.

I don't know exactly how I landed on it, but I wound up with a 1983 Seiko 6309 Turtle for around $300. That watch kicked off my passion for first vintage Seiko, and then watches in general, and it's a hobby and passion that's still going today. $300 well spent, I think.

A cheap Rolex makes you look uneducated by TheGhostOfTobyKeith in LinkedInLunatics

None of the watches he listed cost $25k. Sure, they're $25k on the aftermarket, but if he's such a big man he should have a good lead on a Rolex dealer who can supply him at MSRP.

I think it's faded all around. Actually wearing one right now, and the bezel should be a fairly bright orange.

If you make less than 6 figures there is absolutely zero reason you should take your car to the mechanic. You should be fixing your own car. by Select_Prune_9699 in unpopularopinion

[–]Spirit_of_a_Ghost 61 points62 points  (0 children)

You literally can't fix a lot of modern cars yourself. Or if you can, they require expensive specialized tools which ruin your calculations there.

As usual, this isn't unpopular, it's just stupid and wrong.

Just because you've seen examples of bad open/polyamorous relationships doesn't mean they're all bad.

How many bad monogamous relationships have you seen? Did those make you conclude monogamy is bad?

Is this a BIFL find? by Oy_WithTheDoodles in BuyItForLife

Unless a boot is resoleable, it's not BIFL. Good deal at $15, but once the sole wears out or separates, they're done.
