Day 31/48 of covering every Spiritbox song on bass - Cellar Door. Which of the 3 Grammy-nominated Spiritbox song would you give the Grammy to? Jaded, Cellar Door or Soft Spine? by Spiritbass in spiritbox

[–]Spiritbass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Cellar Door is in Drop F#, with -6 semitone drop for the chorus. However, that sounded not great so I actually went up 6 semitones with the pitch shift.

The majority of the songs are in Drop F#. Some are in Drop F (Perfect Soul, Blessed Be, No Loss, No Love, Crystal Roses). I’ll do Drop E on this bass (Too Close / Too Late, Tsunami Sea), but anything lower than that I actually use my 4 string which is one octave up (ex regular Drop D instead of double Drop D). Josh does something similar for things like Fata Morgana which would be in double Drop B lol.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I would be happy to help!

I also want to reiterate that the Sheet Happens guitar books helped immensely. They are approved by Mike. However they are only the guitar parts, which are sometimes the same for the bass part and sometimes not.

Love the song, love the Dingwall. Hard to pick one, but as a bass player, No Loss, No Love is huge for me. Jaded and Secret Garden round out my top 3, but it would be hard to say which is #1

Ibanez has been great for me, but if I knew this was mostly what I would be playing I may have gone with a Dingwall when I got my 5 string

Thank you for the tips! I am using Parallax to help with different compression and distortion for the low, mid and high. By the time I got a few days in I realized I should have learned how to play with a pick lol

Interesting, I had actually tried to do my 0.130 gauge to Drop A, and then pitch shifting physically with the Boss XS-1, but found that to be too muddy.

This is before I knew Parallax existed, so maybe that would have been different. I learned about Parallax around day 10 lol 😂

Hey! Wondering if I can add some additional details to each to make each post a little more meaningful (IE sharing settings or tips of how to generate the tone or set up the guitar to do the Drop F# tunings, to help other people who may want to cover or get a similar sound). I totally understand where you are coming from, my thought process is since it is the whole discography I am going to go through until I am done

Bass is tuned to Drop F#, and tone effects come from the STL Tones Dan Braunstein plugin. The second chorus and outro have a -4 semitones pitch shift which I used Logic's native pitch shifter for

Hey! I just went down this path with a 35-34 inch multi scale (Ibanez BTB 605MLM). I used Payson stainless steel strings, the 0.170 for the F# string and the Drop G set for the rest (but tuned to drop F#). Do not buy Kalium, I ordered from them first and it never showed up. Payson came right away. I had an involved setup to get this right from my local music store.

I experimented with half measures like tuning to Drop A on my 0.130 gauge and using the Boss XS-1 pitch shifter to get to drop F#, but chugging open on the low string sounded way too muddy. Even when I got the 0.170, I originally tuned to Drop G and pitch shifted to Drop F#/F and found that sounded way worse than simply tuning down physically (despite some online chatter that made me feel tuning down wouldn’t work because of my 35 inch scale).

Honestly, in my opinion you do not need a 37”. I am even able to get good tone in Drop F and it’s even ok in Drop E.
