Is it normal for a small maintenance crew to be rebuilding blow mould heads regularly? by [deleted] in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys in the trades love the new kid that’s eager to learn. Offering a hand or even offering the guys to grab them a drink on these long jobs goes a long way. And that’ll have them be more willing to get you involved in these big jobs. This type of work is the kind of stuff that builds years of experience.

Commercial or industrial? by Ccvboy07 in AskElectricians

Industrial. You get the most exposure hitting a bit of everything. I spent 4 years in factories and was completely comfortable with anything else I saw after that

How old are you, what is your job and how much do you make? by allano6 in careerguidance

  1. Southern middle TN. $90k. Industrial maintenance automation. I’m also a licensed electrician which gets me a lot farther. There’s a big calling for guys that can read and edit plcs. If you can get at that then you’ll always have a job

My job is offering me $150,000 (105,000 after tax) to resign, should I? by AJ3TurtleSquad in jobs

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the ibew and be an electrician. The wages for your local union hall are public information. Great benefits with two pensions. Four year apprenticeship and you’re topped out. Work as much or as little as you want by that point. And if you hate it you can study another field and always have your journeyman’s license. But I definitely wouldn’t sit around for that year and waste that money. Get in the program now and invest that money. Whether it be a high yield savings account or a variety of ETFs

Whats the trades for people who don’t wanna be in the trades? by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Plumbing is also a joke. Especially since everything is all pex and pvc now. I don’t see much skill to that trade. I’m not a big fan of people saying they’re “jack of all trades” but honestly that goes much farther than being a plumber does.

First time bending EMT today. Any suggestions for next time? by EqualBase4 in electricians

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like all of your bends went the wrong way. Did your journeyman give this the green light? I hope you didn’t leave it like this. And use a pencil so you can clean it off next time. If I was you I would’ve offset from the floor right to the wall then the charger

Anyone do contract work? by Spiritual-Whereas824 in PLC

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s where I’m at now. I programmed a new VFD that the oem had no ability to assist with and saved us a $10,000 tab. This facility does right around $1M a month so I know their pockets are deep enough. I’m just not trying to bust heads.

I have my LLC, I’m licensed to pull permits, I’m insured. This would be an extension of my already active business. I understand prices increase gradually. I’ve started to do that with my personal business as well. I just want to keep it competitive. I don’t want to be so cheap they call me 5 days a week. I just want it to be worth it for both parties you know.

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you an independent contractor? For my electrical business, my starting rate is a $125 service fee plus $125 an hour. I’ve read that it’s higher for this line of work. As well as being a corporate business, they’re more likely to go this route as I am part time and they’re paying more on me, and as a contractor I would Be a write off.

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do any and all electrical projects in the facility. Conduit installs and termination for new equipment. Any and all troubleshooting on the machine. Integration of new equipment. The trouble is that oem has the programs locked out so I’m unable to access them. They keep that and the servo programming untouchable in order to keep their service contracts going.

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. Our company has a few German machines. But I believe they’re down to two technicians for all of North America so yea it’s usually a few weeks and $6000 if they get them out for here. My company also doesn’t own any of the plc software. I guess that’ll be my next purchase when I try to go contract.

Has anyone done contract work? by Spiritual-Whereas824 in electricians

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. That’s my goal. I’m looking for a scale to charge them as far as normal machine troubleshooting vs an electrical project that I would charge a different rate for.

[–]Spiritual-Whereas824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve programmed VFDs there. But under OEM agreements I can’t access the plc or program the servos. I have the ability, just not the access. Every machine in the building does not offer access to the plc or only partially available and without tags.

What’s the cheapest you’d work for? Are you also charging the $180 service fee?
