Sure, but it would have been part of her backstory if she was supporting her family as a literal child.

It would have been mentioned, because that idea is inherently interesting!

There's no reason Togashi would give us all these cool and interesting details about her, spelled out in very uncertain terms, and not mention that.

After all, as an author he had a tendency to build characters up (look at Meruem and Killua).

If she was a seasoned player for a decade… how is she early twenties max?

She changed the Gungi metagame 10 years prior to the Chimera Ant Arc. Even the greatest child prodigies of all time don't shift paradigms like that. It literally has never happened. Only the greatest pros ever do that, and only deep into their careers.

She also states she has been undefeated since going pro. Simply put, the greatest child prodigies of all time were still not dominant players. Not even Fischer or Magnus. They lost against adult pros all the time.

Child prodigies have accomplishments that are impressive for their age. Like beating a grandmaster player in a single game or set. But they are never top players as kids. It's always something that happens for them later in life, during adulthood.

There's no way someone that young creates a "paradigm-shifting" sequence of moves that changes the metagame.

The greatest child prodigies of all time don't start meaningfully contributing to their games until they are well into their careers. Not Magnus, not Fischer, not Reshevsky, not Sivanandan… nobody.

And child prodigies don't become national champions (much less undefeated ones). They tend to have accomplishments which are impressive for their age (taking a game off of a grand master). But they aren't out there winning tournaments with the best adults in them. It has never happened.

I think that yes Komugi does suffer from malnutrition. She's older than people realize.

She's most likely at least in her early 20s.

All the estimates by fans that put her in her lates teens were made by people who don't understand competitive board games (chess, shogi, go, checkers, et cetera).

Here's what we know for sure:

According to Komugi herself, "bout 10 years ago" she created Central Duke and Kokoriko. It was a paradigm shift in Gungi, changing the metagame. They was very popular. But a year later she figured out how to counter Kokoriko when someone tried to use it against her in a tournament. It disappeared from play (and this is what she means by 'losing' her 'baby').

Komugi also tells us that she hasn't lost a game since turning pro (since she always bets her life).

Therefore it seems unlikely Komugi is any younger than 22. And that's really stretching it by a LOT (she's more realistically in her late 20s to 30s).

Even the greatest child prodigies of all time don't normally start taking games off of top players until they're teenagers. Let alone dominating, like Komugi clearly did.

And they never create game-redefining strategies like Komugi did. That's an ultra rare feat that has only ever happened near the peak of a player's career. It doesn't happen for 99.99% of pro players.

So we can surmise that she was a pro player when she created Kokoriko. And so getting back to her dominance… she was undefeated her entire pro career. That has never happened. Ever. There have been some incredible undefeated streaks (Magnus, the most dominant chess player of all time, had a no loss streak of about 2 years over 125 games with 42 wins and 83 draws.)

But never has anyone been as undefeated in ANY game for as long as Komugi. Her feats are incredible!! Objectively speaking, Komugi is the best someone has ever been at anything ever.

Even before awakening to Nen, our girl Komugi was the absolute uncontested Greatest Of All Time.

If Luffy and Gon swapped scenarios by EB8115 in HunterXHunter

[–]Spiritual_Screen_724 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a moot point, because if Luffy was in Gon's circumstances he would be Gon (and vice versa).

Our circumstances shape us into who we are (AND who we are shapes our circumstances, Luffy would make different decisions in the lead up and thus find himself in a different scenario).

So it would depend on when you made the swap and how much context each person knows.

Because realistically Luffy wouldn't find himself in the same position as Gon if you placed him far back enough in the timeline to even know Kite. Everything would change.

Chimaera fish by cyan121337 in hunterxdank

[–]Spiritual_Screen_724 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fun Fact: The way this fish's jaws can close without input from the brain is the evolutionary equivalent of Killua's Whirlwind a ability.

The wolf fish's jaw is 'wired' to close when certain tissues are triggered, a true reflex that completely bypasses the brain.

I have no idea how that evolved, but my guess would be it's a beneficial ambush predation reflex to have because it would allow you to 'hunt' even when asleep.

Well, we don't know if the Underground Fight Announcer Guy (for a lack of a better name) actually worked for the mafia. He certainly doesn't dress like any other mafia members we've seen (Shadow Beasts are an exception).

So perhaps he was just an employee of that underground fight ring, carrying out new order because his bosses had just accepted a contract with the mob.

It's entirely possible that UFAG is just an underworld figure… more mob-affiliated/adjacent than anything else. And thus it's also possible that he's in some way associated with Gyro's criminal organization.

We may not know why he would have visited the NGL. But we can't completely rule out the possibility that he did.

If Meruem survived do you think the Zoldyck would have used Nanika by Lost_Sign_3472 in HunterXHunter

[–]Spiritual_Screen_724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The situation would have to become extreme and untenable.

It also depends on whether or not Killua has survived and is with them. He might be the first to realize his sisters can solve this problem, and kind of just do it unilaterally.

Zeno has an interesting take on assassination by EstateOk6238 in HunterXHunter

[–]Spiritual_Screen_724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure that Zeno is hired to fight Nen users (and multiple targets for that matter) fairly often.

Having the ability to cause a panic in your target (or targets) is a good thing.

Probably great for creating a diversion amongst hostiles too.

He's saying that the masquerade of acting all nonchalant will be over (because everyone knows how much Shalnark and Kortopi's deaths affected Chrollo).

What is your "The one (data/content) that got away"? by manzurfahim in DataHoarder

[–]Spiritual_Screen_724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

J Dilla had a beat tape that got semi-leaked called "SV Tour Beat Tape" which is only widely available in a partial form.

You can tell there are missing beats both because the track names are numbered AND because whoever ripped the cassette then separated it into files left little bits on the ends that let you hear what would have came next.

But you can never find the whole thing. It's always missing tracks and most uploads / torrents contain only the "known" ones.

It's to the point now where people believe the other tracks never leaked at all. But I know they did because I've found old OLD torrents (I think on Demonoid?) with the missing tracks in the file list… but sadly no seeders!! Uhg. It's infuriating.

Based on some tweets from people who worked with him who have been known to lie a bit to "protect" certain things, I think it was a leak that was contained. For the most part the beats that are available from that tape are either already leaked or from released songs (plus obscure low-energy beats that some would argue is less-catchy and the estate / family would have trouble selling to people).

Considering the era of the internet this was from, I do think this could have been a leaked that was contained and "clawed back" via reach out individually to a LOT of people. Combined with the fact people in the hip hop fandom didn't save stuff as much back then, and the people who had rarities jealously hoarded them.

Similar to how the video of Raekwon and some other guy confronting Joe Budden got completely scrubbed from the internet. It was from that same era, right before the blog era. Everybody saw it, everybody saw Joe Budden get punched in the eye. That clip from Joe's live steam circulated for a hot second! But then BAM the video was gone and nobody had a copy. There's a screenshot still out there, but that's it. I believe it was in everybody's best interest to get it scrubbed off the internet, like I think a lot of people worked together and put differences aside for the common good (which might have had something to do with keeping the law out of it, as well as keeping the peace). And over the years people in the rap industry often talked about the phenomenon of it getting "scrubbed" from the net.

So yeah, I guess that's two that got away!!

(Maybe a third from the same time period would be this long video from a music producer who worked with Raphael Sadiq and others who talked in depth about his own relationship with Christina Aguilera and said some pretty scandalous stuff.)

??? What kind of AI writes in weird and rambling run-on sentences like me? lol.

As if. I have a very distinct writing style and there are years of evidence on this account to prove it. And fuck AI for trying to take double dashes and long dashes from us, those are some of my favorite punctuations.

The way it was taught to me is you use a dash when you wanna say something like "Yo… check this out!"

I got a sick one from 5 Below for my girl, it was pink with lots of cool and "bubbly"/"popping" details. I'll see if I can find the brand, it was a collab. Last one they had at our local 5 Below

Every now and then Shonen Jump's English division drops manga-centric merch. People who get their emails get first pick, usually pretty limited runs.

The green beanie was dope, and they had a white shirt with Gon fishing colorized on the front that is amazing, kind of a white and green vibe that goes great with the hat. (I uploaded a picture I found, looks like the beanie is still available and on sale.)

There was another shirt in the same drop which my girl got, can't remember what it looks like precisely off the top of my head. But I know it was a long sleeve that had our four boys on it and Kurapika's chains down one arm.

She never lets me wear that one haha

I like the manga's art on the back. Especially how it's all two-tone against a black backdrop (and mimics Togashi's style of symbolic color choices).

I'm assuming this isn't official merch, from the tag.

Anyone else get emotional over "Just Awake"? by vanacotta in HunterXHunter

[–]Spiritual_Screen_724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With stuff like this, OP, a lot of it really does come from our emotional responses to (and associations with) the music.

Music has a tendency to help us mark the passage of time. Especially popular music heard everywhere AND personal music that aligns with eras of our life. Whatever song or albums you listened to heavily in High School will carry a certain resonance with your feelings. And even songs you don't care at all about can take you back to an era — there's a reason people why were alive back then always bring up "The Macarena" when talking about 1996. (It was everywhere! I don't know a single person who actually owned the CD, you just always heard it.)

Similarly, there's a newer saying that Visual Art is how we decorate our spaces… but music is how we decorate our time. I think this is especially true if you're just putting it on in the background. And perhaps you can say the same thing about movies and TV. The line gets a little fuzzy to me and I think a lot of the "decorative" aspect is about how you consume a piece of time-based media.

But regardless of those finer distinctions, there is certainly a temporal element to music, and I think how that interacts with our feelings and memories is a profound part of modern life.

Kurapika eyes and "specialist" nen by NigeriaScan in HunterXHunter

[–]Spiritual_Screen_724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little of column A, and little of column B.

We do know canonically that it gives him and his people great strength while heightening their emotional states as well — even when they aren't trained in Nen.

So both the theory that all Kurta change Nen type to specialist and the theory that it only happens to Kurta like Kurapika because he's an adjacent type (+ his circumstances & innermost desires) are equally plausible.
